Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Gino Decampo! He puts the T in Tw*t 😆
also keith lemmon- very rude and acts like you saying hello has ruined his day

I used to work in a SEND school next door to Prunella and Timothy. They were absolutely lovely and did loads for the kids there. They didn’t object to the constant noise and came to the concerts the kids performed in. Really lovely couple.

I'm very relieved to hear it. Maybe they just hated weddings.

Michael Sheen - which is a shame because I do like his acting.

My partner knew someone who worked on a show with Michael Sheen and said he was a nightmare, very sneery and demanding.

My cousin when he was about 7 met John major at a motorway service station. He was having his breakfast and my cousin walked up to him and asked for an autograph. His security started to move him but apparently John was really nice and friendly. I always have the spitting image John major when I hear his name so he was completely different to how I expected😂

I live in his old constituency and have started to bump into him in the country park quite regularly. He always has a brief chat and the dog, who is generally a good judge of character, loves to say hello to him. Have to be careful she doesn’t get too exuberant as he walks with a cane now.

WB Yeats disliked children was very much NOT the turn I was expecting this thread to take.

He was a very odd bloke in many ways, obsessed with the occult. Can well imagine that other people's children didnt have much appeal.

Do love some of the poetry though.

Victoria Wood, Peter Bowles, Alan Yentob, all twats.

VICTORIA WOOD???

Devastated.

When CB died one of her supposed 'friends' wrote a piece about her , and that showed her in a bad light.
Apparently one of her panto demands was a fridgeful of champagne- which she used to take home every night.

I don't think I remember anyone being as friendless in showbiz circles as Cilla. With the exception of Paul O'Grady nobody seemed to like her. I remember years ago watching her win a BAFTA lifetime achievement award, when she went to collect it the applause was lukewarm and POG had to harangue people to stand up.

I've read many times that she was painfully shy IRL. Maybe that had something to do with it.

Helena bonham carter told me to fuck off once in hampstead when she cut me up at a junction 😂

Used to see her quite often on Hampstead High Street. she always seemed quite smiley and relaxed (when she was not driving obvs!)

God, I wonder if these people realised they were signing up to be a sort of permanent Butlins Redcoat to the world when they got into TV. Sounds awful. Imagine having to be "on" like this all the time - even when you're on your period or your mum is in hospital or you just haven't slept.

But there’s a difference between being subdued, quiet or private and telling someone to fuck off with no provocation. I could forgive the former but would judge the latter.

Makingmusicinmy50s · 22/07/2025 20:44

My friend met Gordon Ramsey at Silverstone Grand Prix two weeks ago and said he was funny and delightful and was up for a laugh and a chat 😀

I guess people perhaps don’t always share what they did to provoke the ‘fuck off’ though. A depressing number of people seem to think that telling a celebrity their work is crap or they don’t like them or various other things should merit a hearty handshake, a selfie and an autograph.

Two people I know met her and reported similar, and they were as disappointed as you.

i think she was shy and dealt with her fame by sort of warning people off, not by rudeness but by an unsmiling manner. I get the impression she was that cliche - the extrovert performer who’s actually painfully shy and private.

I met Wendy Richard at some function many, many years ago and she was a right snotty cold fish! She literally did what she was obviously being paid for and was not going to do a thing more. As she made to walk back behind the scenes to wherever she had emerged from, a young girl stopped her and asked her for an autograph for her Granny who was apparently a fan of Are You Being Served. She literally swatted the girl's hand away and flounced off. I remember thinking how callous it looked.

I have the complete opposite experience of her and found her to be incredibly kind. Sort of proving the point of the second post in the thread.

Met Floella Benjamin on a bus in Barbados. She was very chatty, told us some local history and have us directions when we got off. Lovely lady.

MidWifeCrises · 22/07/2025 20:47

Using one of my other names for this. Used to work in retail and met looooaaads of famous people during that time. Annie Lennox was a reasonably regular customer and was always lovely.

Without going into the details (and hopefully not too outing) one of my colleagues went through a terrible bereavement experience that was high profile at the time. It somehow came up in conversation with AL who was surprised the colleague was working in a shop while dealing with the bereavement issue. AL gave details for the colleague to make contact if they felt she could help in any way. As far as I know, colleague didn’t contact but AL received an award soon after and at the end of her acceptance speech mentioned support for my colleague’s family campaign on national TV!

Steve Punt is aptly named, such a rude, misogynistic and entitled -unt (i was at university with him).

Met both him and Hugh Dennis after a work-in-progress gig locally. Steve was very quiet and unassuming (shy?) compared to Hugh, but gave me 2 of his pain-au-chocolat pastries as he'd bought too many and he didn't want them wasted! Perhaps/hopefully he's changed since uni days?

Wouldn't have expected anything less. Nice to hear though as Floella was a huge part of many of our childhoods.

True!

We’re all probably assuming everyone behaves with tact and sensitivity towards these off-duty celebs, but I realise that some members of the public are just appallingly crass and probably deserve a sharp rebuff!

"Unable Stubbs" 😂 I always thought Una was an unusual name. Now I know it was short for 'unable'. 🤭

And that is why I should remember to read my bloody posts before hitting return🤣🤣
Poor Una - she was lovely!

Very happy to hear that. I’ve met Tom Shanklin, really lovely gent.

Shane Williams is an absolute dreamboat who went out of his way to make sure I got a photo with him. Jamie Roberts always pretends he remembers me and Leigh Halfpenny is the shyest person I've ever met ( but ridiculously pretty).

I’m afraid he and David Tennant both gave me bad vibes.

I may be being unfair…
