Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

I guess people perhaps don’t always share what they did to provoke the ‘fuck off’ though. A depressing number of people seem to think that telling a celebrity their work is crap or they don’t like them or various other things should merit a hearty handshake, a selfie and an autograph.

Completely agree. These threads are one sided and unsubstantiated.

This is very outing for anyone that knows me but sod it!

I’ve met almost everyone from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. I have been genuinely surprised by how friendly and nice all of them were. The ones that stood out as exceptionally nice were:

Nathan Fillion - just an absolute sweetheart
Alan Tudyk - spent ages asking me about my pregnancy despite it being an event for him and his colleagues
Morena Baccarin - similarly spent a while asking about my pregnancy too
Juliet Landau - kept saying how she loved my nickname and was going to tell one of the other cast members who shared the name when she got back
James Marsters - an absolute gentleman who didn’t rush anyone and made sure to see everyone waiting to meet him
Bailey Chase - made a huge effort to dress up really smartly for the photo shoot with fans despite a heavy party with the cast and fans the night before AND it turning out that he and the other guests had not been paid by the event organisers (in fact every single guest there that weekend was amazing despite this fact, unlike a certain David Boreanaz who wasn’t happy about something at another event and was a miserable twat the whole time)

I won’t called DB out as being awful though, as at another event he was charming, friendly, smiling, engaging - clearly had a bad day the first time round and we all have that occasionally!

What was Sarah Michelle Gellar like?

Met Floella Benjamin on a bus in Barbados. She was very chatty, told us some local history and have us directions when we got off. Lovely lady.

Oh thank god, my heart stopped when I started reading your post and saw her name!

That would've been childhood ruined in an instant.

God if I met jimmy page I’d think I’d died and gone straight through those pearly gates.

I’ve met Robert Plant a number of times (at the football so not at work iykwim) and he Seems a bit fed up to be asked for a photo but always complies nicely. He was genuinely interested and nice When I said we’d gone to the same school.

True!

We’re all probably assuming everyone behaves with tact and sensitivity towards these off-duty celebs, but I realise that some members of the public are just appallingly crass and probably deserve a sharp rebuff!

I think ‘BANTS’ has a lot to answer for…

Like a lot of people who live in London, I wouldn’t think of approaching someone famous I saw wandering around. I’d feel like a loon! And they’re usually just doing their shopping etc.

I’ve only ever spoken to a celebrity twice in a public place unsolicited. One was an actor who lived near me who I’d recently found out I had a mutual friend with. We happened to be queuing next to each other one day and I mentioned it to him and we had a nice chat about them.

The other was Paul Merton, who I ended up sitting next to at the theatre one day. The play was something I particularly associated with him from some work he’d done years ago and at the end I decided to tell him that as we were filing out. He was really happy to talk about it and asked DC about their own experience watching the play. But I assume I might have got a less positive reaction if I’d told him he couldn’t act like that!

Lickityspit · 22/07/2025 20:59

I met John Leslie before all the scandal and he was very respectful and kind

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 22/07/2025 20:59

I feel I should add Ozzy Osbourne after tonight's news, my dad served him, Sharon and the other members of BS many times back in the day (not all at the same time) and had nothing but the highest of praise for them. Ozzy was always happy to queue, polite, chatty and never forgot his roots.

Michael Sheen - which is a shame because I do like his acting.

My partner knew someone who worked on a show with Michael Sheen and said he was a nightmare, very sneery and demanding.

WHAT?!

Michael Sheen? 'The Assembly' Michael Sheen?
Tell me it's not so 😭

I’ve met Brian May and he’s a lovely bloke.

Peace is restored in my heart , he does indeed seem a lovely bloke ( he smiled at me btw) phenomenally clever , rescues hedgehogs , great guitarist .

That's a lot of good for one person. And lovely to cap it all.

itsanothernamechangeone · 22/07/2025 21:03

Roy Keane is lovely

ConfusedSchooling · 22/07/2025 21:04

Robbie Williams: came across as very arrogant
Jarvis Cocker - ever so cool and friendly
Nigella : stunning but very aloof/rude
Gordon Ramsey: very sleazy
My ex met Noel Gallagher - massive coke head, Liam's actually the nicer one

MidWifeCrises · 22/07/2025 21:06

A few words on a long list of other famous people I’ve met in and out of various jobs:

Davina McCall - lovely and down to earth
Stacey from Eastenders - shy and police
Whitney from Eastenders - friendly and sweet
Emma Willis - self aware and standoffish
Phil from Eastenders - reserved but polite
Stacey Solomon - total sweetheart
Jamie from Eastenders - friendly ‘one of the lads’
Nicky Clarke (hairdresser) - friendly
Karl Lewis (athlete) - chatted while way during flight, good humour and big laugh
Chris Eubanks - moved his seat to sit near us on Gatwick Express, not at all arrogant, very funny and interested in our anecdotes about working in retail
Russell Brand - friendly and funny
Lenny Henry - surprisingly shy and quiet
Mylene Klass - totally up herself
Kriss Akabusi - friendly, chatty and funny
Linford Christie - gauche and aloof
Denise Lewis - friendly, down to earth
Jess Ennis - friendly and chatty, good sense of humour
Emma Bunton - surprisingly shy
Vinny Jones - friendly and prankster
Kat Stevens - wise and serious
Dev from Coronation St - arrogant and cold
Keith Sweat - shy and nervous
Carol McGiffin (love her!) - hilarious and chatty

I can’t remember any more for now.

Diane Morgan (I think?) once spoke about being invited onto the set of the Victoria Wood Show by a friend who was in the cast, and she was briefly introduced to Victoria and was really starstruck and started gushing about how VW had been her childhood hero and inspiration to get into comedy - and Victoria cut her dead. Literally looked straight through her and acted like she hadn’t spoken and wasn’t in the room. Diane was totally mortified.

When I mentioned this on a previous thread, loads of people rushed to defend Victoria Wood - “She was famously shy”; “She was working”; “She was under a lot of pressure and responsible for the whole show”. Yeah … but even given all that, she was still a tiny bit of a cunt, wasn’t she?

I still love Victoria Wood, but that pops into my head every time I watch her.

I met some posh neighbours of VW’s on holiday and they hadn’t got a good word to say about her either!

Ah now you see, DP met him a couple of years ago and he was an absolute darling...

@overthinker001 Not a fan of his comedy, but when I met him twice serving him at box office, he behaved politely and didn't assume I knew who he was (which I definitely did).

Make a change from some arrogant, entitled z listers who are very DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM!!

I’m afraid he and David Tennant both gave me bad vibes.

I may be being unfair…

Definitely agree with this. Always found them both super creepy.

I'm in quite a celeb-heavy area, and most are very normal. I used to work in a pub once upon a time so came across a fair few.

The most famous tend to be rather distant, but polite. As you might expect. Some of the pop stars / DJs were very social, and we'd have some very good afterparties. Probably shouldn't name names!

Ian Hislop was pretty up himself, I was serving him at a pub many years ago and he wouldn't even look at me when ordering. And no, I wasn't beaming at him, or asking for an autograph. Just asked what I could get him to drink, and he promptly looked in the opposite direction and told his companion what he wanted rather than answer me.

Matt Aitken of Stock Aitken Waterman is deeply, deeply unpleasant.

My ex told me Vic Reeve was the worst human he's ever met, extremely rude and arrogant.

A friend works cabin crew and had Amber Heard in either first or business, she said she was the worst passenger she's ever had. She delayed a flight for ages as she refused to get off her phone. She also said Tony Blair was extremely off hand and arrogant, and would only communicate via his vast security team.

Wineinthegarden · 22/07/2025 21:12

Anita Dobson was an absolute bitch to me. Brian May made up for it by being lovely and as a fan of Queen made my day!!

DIYDave · 22/07/2025 21:12

Triggered by Neil Oliver - not a nice man
And Dick Strawbridge - mansplaining arsehole with his C4 handcuffs.

There's a reason I don't work in TV anymore

NotMyRealAccount · 22/07/2025 21:13

My DH used to work in a medical establishment often visited by celebrities. He says that some of them turned the charm off as if a switch had been flicked as soon as the camera stopped rolling, but Nick Knowles rather unexpectedly stood out as someone who was always delightful towards the patients and staff on and off camera.

SereneLilac · 22/07/2025 21:13

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 17:40

Celebrities don't have to be nice.

I met niall horan from one direction and he was rude to me, but i did think that he might have been stressed and tired.

I was at college with his cousin who said he was an arsehole.
'He'll be even worse now he's famous' 😂

Hiptothisjive · 22/07/2025 21:15

I have a reverse. Thought Liam Gallagher would be a bit of a dick. Hung out with him backstage at Glasto 95. He was warm, friendly and overall good guy.

Twelftytwo · 22/07/2025 21:16

I was really disappointed after meeting Lady Jane Campbell (disability rights campaigner). Yes I was in her home as the assistant to one of her friends who was disabled but she treated me very much as "staff" and not a person, My employer treated me different eg if he and friends were having a takeaway would ask me what I wanted etc.
She didn't address me directly at all but told him I could wait in her carers room.

I met Lulu and she was unbelievably arrogant and kept talking about herself in the third person.
Oh and she has TERRIBLE skin!

When Lulu became famous in the 70s she was appearing on Teesside. One of the girls I worked with came back from lunch all excited because she'd been in the lift in Binns - Middlesbrough's only department store - and Lulu had got in.
And it was Lulu 's awful skin that my work colleague couldnt get past!

khaa2091 · 22/07/2025 21:20

Fern Britton - she was lovely, despite the extremely trying circumstances in which she found herself (I wouldn't have managed it).

Prince Charles - had stayed somewhere official with a friend. On seeing him at another event about 15 years later he remembered the names of her grandchildren!
