Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Sorry don’t know why my message posted twice!

one of my relatives often used to see Paul McCartney as they worked in the same area where he had an office. She is not a fan, in fact has no time for celebrity culture but she was a little star struck to see him in the same sandwich shop she frequented and quite impressed that he popped out to get his own lunch.

My friend worked in HMV and Jimmy Carr would always come in when he was doing a show in town. Chatted to the staff and would secretly sign his DVDs.

I met Wendy Richard at some function many, many years ago and she was a right snotty cold fish! She literally did what she was obviously being paid for and was not going to do a thing more. As she made to walk back behind the scenes to wherever she had emerged from, a young girl stopped her and asked her for an autograph for her Granny who was apparently a fan of Are You Being Served. She literally swatted the girl's hand away and flounced off. I remember thinking how callous it looked.

I met Wendy years ago during her peak EastEnders time. She was lovely, spoke to me for a while and didn't seem stuck up at all. I wanted an autograph but didn't have a

pen and paper. Wendy took my address and a few days later I received a signed photo from with a personal message saying how much she enjoyed meeting me.

It just goes to show you how different people can be at different times.

The video of Cilla and the undercover Cosmopolitan journalist who infiltrated Blind Date really doesn't show CB in a good light.

When CB died one of her supposed 'friends' wrote a piece about her , and that showed her in a bad light.
Apparently one of her panto demands was a fridgeful of champagne- which she used to take home every night.

I have met a number of politicians (Ministers & MPs) of all persuasions (extreme left through to extreme right) over many decades, some I have known since before they became famous, and I know that this may sound like parroting the stereotypical image - but they have all been total twats. Seriously bad people who I would hate giving 5 minutes of my time to.

I don't want to out myself, nor name names, nor slag people off, but I will name the best 3 politicians that I have come across personally from a "would I want to spend an evening in their company" POV & it is coincidental that they come from across the political spectrum, and from different decades:

Judith Hart (Labour Minister in the 60s) - lovely woman who brought up a lovely family whilst holding down a high-level career (her husband was incredibly supportive).

Michael Portillo (Conservative Party Leadership Finalist) - I had the pleasure of dining on "top table" with him at an event shortly after he failed to become Tory Leader. He was delightful company, but I was somewhat put off by the politician surfacing when he made an effort to speak to everyone at the event (hundreds). We all have votes!

Roz Savage (Liberal MP for South Cotswolds) - such a normal person with such a leadership message for women.

But in general politicians are a disgrace!

A friend of mine dated Steve Coogan. I cannot put into words how disgustingly vile her is

Tell me more!! I know he's an arse, but he's so clever.

This is very outing for anyone that knows me but sod it!

I’ve met almost everyone from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. I have been genuinely surprised by how friendly and nice all of them were. The ones that stood out as exceptionally nice were:

Nathan Fillion - just an absolute sweetheart
Alan Tudyk - spent ages asking me about my pregnancy despite it being an event for him and his colleagues
Morena Baccarin - similarly spent a while asking about my pregnancy too
Juliet Landau - kept saying how she loved my nickname and was going to tell one of the other cast members who shared the name when she got back
James Marsters - an absolute gentleman who didn’t rush anyone and made sure to see everyone waiting to meet him
Bailey Chase - made a huge effort to dress up really smartly for the photo shoot with fans despite a heavy party with the cast and fans the night before AND it turning out that he and the other guests had not been paid by the event organisers (in fact every single guest there that weekend was amazing despite this fact, unlike a certain David Boreanaz who wasn’t happy about something at another event and was a miserable twat the whole time)

I won’t called DB out as being awful though, as at another event he was charming, friendly, smiling, engaging - clearly had a bad day the first time round and we all have that occasionally!

I’m very jealous! Despite being in my mid-40s I still go weak at the knees over Buffy-era James Marsters. I was always a Spike girl 😍

orangetriangle · 22/07/2025 20:09

I met beanie winters and snorbitz once if anyone remembers him he was a miserable old git and hated kids!

They can't realise exactly what it is like until they become famous.

As jim carrey said , he wishes that everyone could be famous, so they could see that its not the answer to all problems.

And matthew perry said that he thought that all his problems would go away when he became famous, but they didnt.

Yep, plus you don’t know whats happening in that persons life, a friend is a bit famous, a fan was very rude when he turned down an autograph request on a train, he was on the way to hospital hoping to see his grandma before she died.

Stephen Timms is brilliant too.

Steve Punt is aptly named, such a rude, misogynistic and entitled -unt (i was at university with him).

Never met her myself but Cilla Black was widely reported to be a horrible woman …which really surprised (ha) me at the time

I remember when she was alive, she had quite the reputation among cabin crew.

Never met him but talked a fair few times on the phone and I know you shouldn't speak ill of the dead - but Paddy Ashdown was awful - nothing like his supposed reputation.

HPFA · 22/07/2025 20:12

Do we count dead famous people?

My Irish grandmother knew WB Yeats as a child and said he was not friendly with children at all.

She was once pressed to do a party piece on the violin and he was horrible about it.

Wise words. We used to live near an actor who went on tour with a play which had Jane Asher in the cast. This was during the 1960s when she was an actor but was far more famous for being Paul McCartney's girlfriend. Paul came to see her during the tour and word got out, so the hotel was surrounded by screaming fans. Our neighbour always said he decided then and there that he didn't want that sort of fame. He went on to have a very good career in the theatre but did very little TV and film work, so was far from a household name, but he loved his work and judging by the tributes at his funeral he was held in huge esteem by his peers as a person as well as an actor. RIP F.

WB Yeats disliked children was very much NOT the turn I was expecting this thread to take.

Judith Hart was the Minister of Overseas Development when I worked there. She would demand that we were terfed out of the lift so she could use it

So I worked in the music industry so have tons of these

i always found the people who became famous were the ones who tended to be twats.

however the exception to that rule was one direction. They were absolute stars!!! So incredibly nice and that’s very unusual.

Oh I heard that she was horrible from someone who worked with her. Barbara Windsor, however, was lovely.

RitaAndFrank · 22/07/2025 20:21

Someone close to me worked with Damon Albarn, apparently he was a complete c*nt. I saw that video circulating recently of James Blunt and his experience of him and I thought, yep. Pretentious twat.

stressedteachersos · 22/07/2025 20:22

I used to work in a SEND school next door to Prunella and Timothy. They were absolutely lovely and did loads for the kids there. They didn’t object to the constant noise and came to the concerts the kids performed in. Really lovely couple.
