Another thing I've noticed now I'm an old person -
Safeguarding in schools has become red-hot - and as an ex-teacher, I'm not complaining about that. For example, teachers have to be incredibly careful what they say to children nowadays - many fairly innocuous words which would have been OK in the 70s/80s are now taboo, such as 'naughty'.
And then we release them into the real world which I think is more terrifyingly challenging than ever - it's as if we push them off a cliff at age 18. The world is so much more threatening now than it was when I was a youngster with AI, online dating, scams, identity politics, cyber bullying, social media pressures etc.
On MN you will get posters who are hyper protective of children but when an OP shows concern for what their 18 year-old is doing, they are told 'They're adults - it's none of your business! It's their life, their decision!'. So within the twinkling of an eye all that concern and parental care is supposed to be thrown out of the window. I find that bizarre.
I don't know what the answer is, but it just seems weird that childhood has become much more protected while the world is scarier than ever!
