1,000 new PIP claims per day?

1000 replies

flashbac · 30/06/2025 10:21

Is this true? (From someone who is naturally cynical of government info.)

If it is, is there something else behind the statistic? Is it because people have to reapply or something like that?

This is from the government website:

"Monthly PIP awards have more than doubled since the pandemic, rising from 13,000 to 34,000 - a rate of around 1,000 new claims per day, or the population of Leicester every year."

I find the statistic unbelievable.

Just read article in Telegraph people are getting disability payments for acne and writers cramp. I despair. Is this April fools day. Beyond madness.

They are absolutely not getting PIP for just acne, and writers cramp.

The telegraph is strongly right wing. It wants you to think everyone claiming PIP is getting hundreds of pounds for having a pimple.

That doesn't make it true.

Thanks - I'll have a read of this. It may take me a while to wade through all my brain fog but it looks depressing interesting.

I think you hit the nail on the head first time around.
It is depressing !

I get PIP and work part time. I struggle to work full time due to impact of my health. If I could work full time, I would but currently this isn’t feasible due to my health.

i use my PIP towards cost of charging my equipment, buying/replacing equipment as needed and to help towards household costs. People don’t realise the cost of specialist equipment for the disabled compared to your every day equipment.

For example you can buy a bog standard fire alarm for under £20. For a specialist one for the deaf you are looking at £100 plus as need to buy the alarm and then the alerting system on top of that such as a pager that vibrates and flashing lights to wake you. People often say that your local authority will provide this, but it’s not the same across all areas as depend on their budgets and what they are willing to provide.

I am worried if changes are made to PIP I will lose it, if I don’t have the right paperwork or know the right jargon that tick the boxes.

I get why the government are looking to overhaul the benefits system due to how much it is costing us as a country. However targeting the most vulnerable is not going to solve the problem.

There also need to be a shift by employers in how they can best support those with disabilities in their jobs by ensuring the workspace is accessible for their needs, but also to be flexible in hours worked.

I congratulate you sincerely for being able to work. Part time is better than staying at home. I had to give up when I found myself clinging to lampposts in the wind. There are no seats between house and bus stop and in the end I just had to give up. The struggle is hard, because I never know when the nerve leaves my leg and the other isn't strong enough.

You probably look OK to everyone as well!

This thread shows that many people do not understand how expensive it is to be disabled. Last year I was further diagnosed with eye disease and it suddenly crept up on me this past week, and when I wake up it is like looking through frosted glass for a couple of hours.

It is going to be even more costly when I lose sight completely.

Of course they are not. If they were, then they are employing the wrong people in the benefits office.

What I find alarming about this whole issue, and the debate, and vote in Parliament yesterday is that so many people are now convinced there is an army of claimants who don't need disability.

The government has managed to convince the public that it should be possible to reduce the costs of benefits because so many are not as disabled as they say they are.

They have stirred up hatred against the disabled, and there is no doubt they will not save much on the compromise vote yesterday. We don't even know how they propose to get people back to work, always provided there is work out there.

How can people not see what the government is doing to the people? How could people be so stupid as to believe that, when the application book is so large, and the medication we are on should be enough to show our disabilities. What good is having a job if you have a neurological disease where you can be legless in an instant and the workplace has to look after you?

We come up against people who are not keen on helping in case we ask again and make a makeshift of them! On just that one issue independence is key to survival. Unless you have limbs missing or contorted faces, people really cannot recognise disabilities, and now our lives are made worse because the PM thought the number of shamming applicants is enough to pay for the things they put first in their pecking order.

Who on here can tell us what work we should be doing despite our disabilities.

llizzie · 02/07/2025 12:15

justkeepswimingswiming · 02/07/2025 09:59

Yes. Once again if your entitled to high mobility youd get it. To many people asking how to word things on the forms. It is seriously alarming.
also i see a lot of “use the worse day as your every day” for the forms, which is fraud. 🙈 dwp would save so much money if they just looked through those groups.

I wonder if they make the form book for ticks because they employ low paid school leavers who just count the ticks?

Possibly why the government thinks too many get through who shouldn't. It is the lazy people they employ!

Seriously though, the PM has made the public resent us, by trying to convince the voters that they could save money, and I don't think they well save anything now, except, perhaps they might employ disabled people in the civil service and pay them for working, thus reducing the benefit spending.

This 'robbing Peter to pay Paul' attitude is no way to run the country's budget.

@llizzie The disabled did not get the winter fuel payment and were means tested for it just as the elderly were. I can vouch for that.

The disabled have never got winter fuel payment and I can vouch for that. Those of state pension age and those on certain means-tested benefits were given WFA, but disability has never been a qualifying factor. Those with disabilities received it because of their benefit, not because of their disability. I receive PIP and have never received it - this year will be the first year I get it because I only reached state retirement age last year and lost it when the rules were changed.

Try again. People on UC get the WFP.

It isn't a fact that 'many' parents claim DLA for children that are not costing them more than any other child.

Keep in mind that if you want to complicate DLA even more by making parents justify what they spend that it would also affect those you deem to be most in need and also make life even more harder for them.

The vast majority of parents spend the DLA money on their child because the vast majority of parents want what is best for their child and going through the DLA process is far from easy or simple.

Would you say that this government, in attempting to cut spending has alienated the public against the disabled?

There is a mother languishing in jail for putting on social media - wrongly of course - that someone should set fire to the hotels (mush the same as we might say '.. should be shot if they do that...' sort of thing) which led to almost three years in jail, yet the PM and his government have done the same thing to disabled people.

For the sake of the occasional applicant who slips through, we are now abused by the public.

Can I ask (although its not at all relevant to this thread), why the "fighting age" trope is always dragged out? Do you not think men over the age of 18 deserve protection? Or do you think they're coming here to build an army and 'take over' which is what I hear endlessly from people that use this line?

Boat crossings have been an issue for years, what are all these secretly trained army waiting for?

In the countries of their birth, they are of military age.

That’s great for your son. In Scotland, surgeries are telling patients that there is no option for shared care. There is also no right to choose. It’s private diagnosis and private medication or nothing.

Not everyone has the same experiences.

Which is exactly the point I was making. Not every area is the same and we are not in Scotland
I wonder if the fact there are no nhs trusts in Scotland makes a difference in terms of a persons chances of support in this area.
I have no idea tbh.

I feel on reflection the people using disability money for a console would be a very small %

The DWP makes it clear that you can spend the money on whatever you like, you do not have to explain. You just have to need it.

I would agree with this.
Governments are pitting people against each other.
Whether it’s the elderly or disabled they seem to be doing a good job of it too.

They should be careful how they are whipping up hate for certain sections of society.
They need to do their job and get the country on its feet again without the hyped up speeches.
However I think the main issue is our News, journalists and definitely Social media!

I think this is one of the articles @Viviennemary is referring to.( the telegraph is behind a paywall so can’t see it )

If this is the case then presumably there’s either a very good reason for it ( I haven’t found one ) or the system is completely broken.

Someone on here (can't remember the thread) says it's counted if you list it even though it may not be your main condition. Asthma is listed as one of mine even though it rarely causes problems. I certainly wouldn't get pip if I just had asthma

Astonishing, isn't it? Because neither acne nor writers cramp are data collected by the DWP, the only people who actually have PIP data. Anyone would think it was made up, wouldn't they?
