1,000 new PIP claims per day?

1000 replies

flashbac · 30/06/2025 10:21

Is this true? (From someone who is naturally cynical of government info.)

If it is, is there something else behind the statistic? Is it because people have to reapply or something like that?

This is from the government website:

"Monthly PIP awards have more than doubled since the pandemic, rising from 13,000 to 34,000 - a rate of around 1,000 new claims per day, or the population of Leicester every year."

I find the statistic unbelievable.

It’s really important that people understand that PIP is not for people that are out of work. Many people that are entitled to and claim PIP are in work. The PIP payment helps them to be in work.

The severely disabled need assistance.

There is a huge difference between someone with mild depression and someone with extreme learning difficulties.

Mild depression might need medication, or a break or change of routine but it doesn't need money.

No one gets PIP for mild depression you silly person.

Would family members be paid to care for those you deem to be severely disabled?

Yeah, I bet a lot of these twits posting shit about disabled people are the "does s/he take sugar" type. Happens to my DH even now.

Tell me about it. I have worked full-time (and paid taxes) for 46 years, never once been unemployed. Worked part-time from the age of 15. I hold two Masters degrees and a PhD. My best friend is a Director of People's Servies for an English local authority. And when we go out she gets very pissed off when I ask a question and people address her with the answer.

I bet one of us gets deleted, yet MNHQ are happy to allow smearing of disabled people to stand, even suggestions that their cars should be marked out are OK for MNHQ.

It's "educashunul" don't you know. Otherwise known as it's profitable for MN. Never mind the hatred, never mind the vitriol, never mind the offensive twats, feel the clicks and the money just keeps rolling in.

Yep. Apparently we are supposed to "challenge bigotry in the thread. Doesn't apply to other forms of bigotry though.

13-18% on pip work, apparently

Maybe disability benefits should have different rates and levels to cover the fact that disabilities vary? Maybe high levels for the most severe cases and lower levels for the less severe...

Oh wait...

It’s really shit. This has been done to death in site stuff, MNHQ are really shit at managing ablist posters.

Disability is fair game apparently, especially if it’s an invisible one.

1000 new claims PER DAY is not sustainable. Of course there is fraud. Some people using Tic Tok to answer the questions in the correct way and the worst thing about all of this is that it spoils it for the genuine.

As I mentioned before 1000 per day.....

That statement in itself reveals many view it as a cash cow to supplement their lifestyle at the detriment of the truly deserving.

How is at the detriment of the 'truly deserving'? If they don't qualify, they won't get it.

MichaelandKirk · 30/06/2025 17:20

When you have a broken leg its clear its broken. With MH its much much more tricky to prove one way or the other. My cousin is a paramedic. She has frequent flyers on every shift. They know what key words to use to get a Priority 1 response. Generally they cannot ignore these callsbut the callers know what to say.

The faux concern for the "genuine" really grates on me.

Lots of people fiddle optimise their tax returns to pay the minimum of tax and pay accountants to do so on their behalf. Should all "genuine" tax payers be punished for that?

Many do put in claims for very tenuous reasons i have seen it on a DLA Facebook group I'm on but those that fo tend not to be awarded, anyway so they are no gaining anything.

13-18% on pip work, apparently

I’ve seen this figure quoted a few times, and it often goes with an attitude of “see, most don’t work”, but without taking into account that many on pip are severely disabled, in and out of hospital, in residential care and other examples. Many aren’t capable of holding down a job unless there is a great deal of support, and most work places don’t want to do that. Most work places contribution to inclusion is to change their logo for pride month, and that’s it.

Figures around autism show that only 9% work. This doesn’t mean autistics are scummy scroungers, it means that life is really fucking hard and it’s rare to find employees, or just people, who will give the time of day to understand us and what we need, as threads like this show. You can’t have it both ways. Support better or expect more people to need PIP.

How???

If too many attempt to take a slice of the pie, there won't be an adequate slice left for those most in need.

Ureelp · 30/06/2025 17:23

they’re finding the answers on tiktok… okay and how are they proving their “right answers”? You need to submit proof, it’s not just a quiz

this thread really is a bingo card

One of several things I used to help me with DLA forms was a Facebook group and they specifically said that ''based on your child's worst day'' is bad advice and classed as fraud. Seems like PIP online advice needs to catch up.

Sorry should have been clearer. I was talking about some of these Facebook type groups that pop up telling people how to claim. Not anything official.

Indeed there are some people who need every penny. But it’s tiresome for some posters to claim on every thread that there is no fraud. Of course there is! Or “what about tax dodgers?” -yes, that’s wrong too but two wrongs don’t make a right.

I’m not sure that people’s mental health is generally worse - it’s that it is the latest illness. Before it was bad back, ME and fibromyalgia. I bet claims for these have fallen! Disclaimer: I know mentally unwell people and their condition and struggles are not “life’s events” which seem to be many people’s ailment.

Are you implying that ME is not a real
illness? (Which would be an obvious lie)

Or that it is invisible with no single test for its presence (though see https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy8k73443g4o.amp ) and thus could be slightly easier than other illnesses to ‘fake’?

ME / CFS is an appalling enough illness without the possible few who may be faking it further disadvantaging the genuine sufferers, many of whom are bedbound and too ill to challenge the stereotypes.
