What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

NC28 · 28/06/2025 19:58

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

I was thinking the same. Stopping would mean introducing formula which is fine if someone wants to but automatically stopping at 6 months and introducing formula if you otherwise wouldn't is a bit odd.

Most people say this because they weren’t able to breastfeed themselves and they are bitter.

Personalised number plates are pure vanity. Extreme wealth is obscene, think the Bezos circus in Venice this weekend.
We still have no real understanding of the impact Covid has had on the population but it isn't good.
Mandatory sterilisation for women who are repeatedly pregnant and the children are promptly.removed by children's services.

Do you also think that men should be forced to have a vasectomy if they father more than, let's say, 3 children and leave/don't pay for them?

That ‘trans’ is an autism presentation. See also: anorexia, personality disorders.

I wouldn't say it's exclusively an autistic trait, but I agree with you.
I think the dysphoria felt is to do with how the brain of someone who is autistic is developed in utero.

Plasticwaste · 28/06/2025 20:54

Send men down the mines and give them all a curfew.

comoatoupeira · 28/06/2025 20:54

Oh here’s a controversial one: part of the reason why maternity services are struggling is because people don’t manage to go through labour and birth the way they used to approach it, because of modern life and modern society where it’s all about comfort and me me me

No judgement or hate just genuinely curious.. did his friends/school peers know and did he suffer because of this? I'm curious if he will remember feeding to such a late age and how that could impact him.

I doubt anyone knew. I didn’t do it in public. Even if he’d felt the need to discuss his bedtime routine with his friends (I can’t imagine he would though - he mainly liked to talk about superheroes, football and poo at that age) then he would just say “then I have milky before I go to bed”.

He is 12 now and doesn’t really remember anything from that age (he had a really lovely teacher who he adored but he doesn’t remember her at all 😢) although I have probably told him. He likes “when I was little” stories.

Like I say - it really wasn’t a big deal. I planned to stop around the time he turned 2 (as I did with his sister) but he felt very strongly he wanted to continue and his desire to continue was stronger than my desire to stop. (I might have re-thought if I had known just how many fillings my - up until then - pretty perfect teeth would need over the last few years. Apparently 9 years of calcium deficiency - pregnancy, breastfeeding, pregnancy, more breastfeeding - is not great for the old teeth.)

comoatoupeira · 28/06/2025 20:30

Agree. Poor kittens and puppies just want their mum.

Dogs are domesticated though, they wouldn’t survive in the wild - not that that’s a counter argument in itself, but it’s either dogs as pets or v few dogs at all.

SquashMeDown · 28/06/2025 20:55

I have a controversial autism opinion. I’m autistic, as are my children, most of my family and friends.

I used to go by the theory that only autistic people are on the autism spectrum, but I’ve changed my mind.

I think far more people in the population have the genetic potential to be autistic, but if they somehow make it through school ok and find themselves in careers/friend groups/families where they can thrive they’ll never know. There are more and more of us diagnosed now and seeking diagnosis because modern life is getting harder and harder to cope with. I predict that in 5/10 years if we carry on on the same trajectory there’ll be far more seeking diagnosis (and far more posts here about the problem with overdiagnosis 😏).

This plays into a previous comment about having separate diagnoses for severely autistic people who need 24/7 care and those who can kind of muddle through.

These controversial opinion threads should come with a rule, which is you're not allowed to challenge, mock, chastise someone for their opinion. Just scroll on. Otherwise what's the fun in it? It just turns into a bunfight over what I'll call unpopular opinions at best. Most aren't even controversial. Can you imagine the actual controversial ones? mumsnet would shut down. lol

What's fun about a controversial thread if it doesn't cause some types of discussion?

Just opinion after opinion isn't fun.

Whatsitreallylike · 28/06/2025 20:55

My controversial opinion… children cant refuse to eat anything but smiley faces and chicken nuggets if they were never fed them in the first place. Kids eating poor quality food with low/no nutritional value is completely on the parents.

fixingmylife · 28/06/2025 20:55

We would all be better off if we collectively rejected social media. I think evidence will come out (it already is) that shows that it is bad for our brain. I hope this happens one day and we all retreat back into growing real life communities and nobody will be too busy scrolling on their phones to pick up the phone when a friend is calling.

Weepixie · 28/06/2025 20:55

dontcomeatme · 28/06/2025 20:20

Agreed.

Yep. The diagnosis of Classic Kanners Autism has always stood my 33 year old son in very good stead and anyone who tries to get me to use a different term can stick it up their bum.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 28/06/2025 20:56

‘Influencers’ that share their children on their social media pages are shit parents.
there should be laws about monetising from them.

This is an excellent idea.

It could be forced to have a pill implant though, so if they turn their lives around they could come off it.

I’d make it after 2.

This could fly..

Usernamenotavailable19 · 28/06/2025 20:16

If you commit a crime in the UK then you should be deported to the country of your origin, there are over ten thousand foreign nationals in prison here so that would free up some room!

Yup totally agree!

Pippinsdiary · 28/06/2025 20:54

Most people say this because they weren’t able to breastfeed themselves and they are bitter.

Or couldn’t be bothered to breastfeed and don’t want to have to feel guilty about it

Birdsinginginthetrees · 28/06/2025 20:57

Womblingmerrily · 28/06/2025 20:27

Animals do not belong to people. Removing them from their families causes them harm, which is why they spend time crying for them, only stopping when they give up hope and instead attach themselves to the human who has made them suffer in this way because 'I want a pet'

Really? My kitten doesn’t cry daily for his mum. And she is having a well deserved rest after being used for breeding endless litters of kittens until she was eventually abandoned. He doesn’t belong to us. He’s part of our family. Comes up to us for endless lap cuddles and purrs constantly. Definitely not traumatised by his experience in our home.

Theunamedcat · 28/06/2025 20:58

Birdsinginginthetrees · 28/06/2025 20:50

Then what should happen to all the domesticated animals that wouldn’t last 5 minutes in the wild if we set them free?

Phase them out and let the rats and mice spread diseases then they can wring their hands and woe is me about what to do about them if only there was a natural predator to keep them in line....oh wait we let them die out

"But songbirds" humans and their land grabs have done more to decimate birds than cats because we rip down the trees they used to be able to fly up to yes cats can climb but the average well fed cat goes after easy prey they won't bother chasing a bird in a tree when they can grab a mouse in a bush 😉

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 28/06/2025 20:58

And turn the fucking Internet off.

I never understand the people who voluntarily join a greatly enjoyable but hardly essential-to-life internet forum, and then bang on about how we should switch off the internet.

It's a bit like fulminating on how evil it is for humans to eat animals, and how it shouldn't be allowed, whilst tucking into a juicy steak.

My elderly MIL would be quite content to see the internet turned off, but she isn't a hypocrite and doesn't use it except for essential purposes where there's absolutely no alternative (usually with a bit of help). Even she doesn't rail against other people being able to use it, though.

Reversetail · 28/06/2025 20:58

No one has the right to have a child, fertility treatment shouldn’t be funded on the NHS.

JustSawJohnny · 28/06/2025 20:58

Humans are the worst animals on Earth and the sooner we are extinct, the better off the planet will be.

Until then, I'd like all paedo's and rapist's cock and balls routinely smashed between two fucking huge bricks.

skippy67 · 28/06/2025 20:58

Being a SAHM is not a "job".
Having a joint bank account with your spouse doesn't make you more of "a team" than those who have separate finances.
Womens football is shit.

GG1986 · 28/06/2025 20:58

I don't like dogs and don't think they should be allowed inside places that serve food.

Forgot my main controversial opinion.

The vast majority of men are misogynists and prop up a misogynistic world, and too many women are blind to it.

I think the vast majority of women are misogynists too and are blind to it.

I recently saw a psychiatrist say there is both an under and over diagnosis problem. It's a tale as old as time - those who have the means will get a private diagnosis, those who don't, or don't realise due to lack of awareness or resources, won't - and some of those kids will really need one.
