What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

I think that all parents should be required to attend an in depth parenting course during pregnancy that covers not only birth and the newborn stage but also covers child development beyond this. To follow up, I think some form of health care visitation at home should also be entirely mandatory at regular intervals up until the child starts school. There are too many people who are not given enough support both pre and post partum, do not know when to turn when they are struggling, have no idea of what to expect beyond the first few weeks or months. And far too many children who fall between the cracks.

VIOLETPUGH · 28/06/2025 20:49

A man is a man and a woman is a woman, and no matter how you dress what you cut off, take pills for there is no changing that !

Women who say “my husband was able to be successful because I took a step back in my career to care for the children” are kidding themselves.

If it’s a choice between having children or success, the vast majority of men would choose the latter.

I would say the opposite; my DH works hard so that I can take care of my children (which I prefer). Win win

Surrogacy is cruel. The trauma of separting a newborn from their mother who has carried them for 9 months has a longlasting negative effect on mother and child.

I don't think that's controversial, I think that's common sense.

Banrockmystation · 28/06/2025 20:49

That mums should stay at home with children until they start school and that the government should empower families to do this rather than pushing agendas with nurseries etc. Obviously there are some variables but I do really believe those early years suffer when mums don’t get to spend time with the little ones.

After working nearly 40 years in the welfare/benefits sector I can say that there’s a significant proportion of people for whom not working is a choice. There are families where they are on to second generation of non-workers. Very sad to see, and it definitely grinds you down dealing with how entrenched it is.

I did a few sessions in the job centre as a recruiter, speaking to job hunters - at the end of it I was asked what I thought and I said that I found most of the people struggling were quite obviously autistic. The fact they were very autistic wasn’t even mentioned when introducing them but it was quite clear these people wouldn’t be suitable for any of the jobs I have. I spent time with every single one listening to their struggles and can see why they were stuck on benefits. I’m autistic myself but I’m lucky, I can work and can mask to an extent that it’s not too obvious.

notanothersummercold · 28/06/2025 20:49

I think smoking and /or drinking when pregnant should be a criminal offence

littleorangefox · 28/06/2025 20:50

That most mums (note I don't say all mums because I get that circumstances do differ) do in fact have time to shower and get dressed every day when they have a newborn. But I just think it's gross to not shower for days. Have never related to the "I haven't showered and have been wearing the same baby sick stained pyjamas for days" thing.

Oh and baby led weaning is a total waste of time and money and just creates a lot of unnecessary mess.

Having a pet animal living with you in your home is weird. I love animals, I really do, but I believe they should live outdoors. I’ve never met anyone who agrees.

Then what should happen to all the domesticated animals that wouldn’t last 5 minutes in the wild if we set them free?

Neither are broken arms.

What if the infertility is a symptom of an illness?

Whatever. I don't think IVF should be funded by the NHS.

If it's caused by illness, treat the illness, if fertility returns, great. If not, that's life (or not). But, IVF still exists, just not publicly funded.

A great deal of human life is utterly pointless.

I agree. Its a big thing to think about , but your so right.

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 28/06/2025 20:51

People who abuse or kill children should be shot in the face and I’d be happy to do it.

Yes, unless it's totally free of pedestrians.

cloudyblueglass · 28/06/2025 20:44

Women don’t have penises.

That's cheating. It's not controversial except among people with luxury beliefs. Normal people don't believe women have penises, it's a middle class eccentricity.

Technically we used to do that when we locked people up in mental hospitals for acting different

JohnnyLuLus · 28/06/2025 20:52

The majority of mothers who don't try to breastfeed and give it a good go (unless there are medical readons) are lazy, stupid (who wants to throw money away when your body makes the perfect food for your baby), or selfish.

Juhw · 28/06/2025 20:53

It doesn’t matter how you feed your baby. Nobody can tell the difference between a child who was EBF and one who was formula fed.

Secondary infertility here, and 3 ectopics followed. I agree. I don't think having children is a right.

Lalaloope · 28/06/2025 20:53

These controversial opinion threads should come with a rule, which is you're not allowed to challenge, mock, chastise someone for their opinion. Just scroll on. Otherwise what's the fun in it? It just turns into a bunfight over what I'll call unpopular opinions at best. Most aren't even controversial. Can you imagine the actual controversial ones? mumsnet would shut down. lol

notanothersummercold · 28/06/2025 20:54

Fringle · 28/06/2025 20:45

My unpopular opinions concern vegans and a few - but recurring - types of primary school parents.

Not saying any more.

Oh please do!!!!

Asunciondeflata · 28/06/2025 20:54

I agree with you, @SunMootStars I don't know why people have animals living with them. However, they would not survive in the wild, so it's too late...

ScreamingBeans · 28/06/2025 20:48

We are not lucky to have the NHS. It's not 1948 anymore. Most other developed nations also have decent healthcare systems meaning that all their citizens have access to healthcare either free at the point of demand or at perfectly affordable prices. The funding model is clearly inadequate and we are encouraged to be grateful supplicants who humbly accept terrible standards and terrible treatment because we should think ourselves lucky to have it.

Imagine if the water companies kept telling us we were lucky to have clean running water and we better not complain about them dumping sewage on the beaches in case we have to go back to using wells. Or the electricity companies told us we were lucky to be able to read at 8:00 p.m. when it's dark, so we should put up with rude, incompetent or cruel treatment.

Shock horror.

Totally agree with this. My DH was in A&E recently and said it was like being in a third world country, I wouldn’t even want to repeat most of the things he saw that night as they were so horrific. I honestly don’t think some people realise how bad it has become.

2dogsandabudgie · 28/06/2025 20:54

That grammar schools should be closed. They used to be for the top 25% of children who were able to pass the 11+ with no tutoring. Now that nearly everyone is paying for a tutor grammar schools have become meaningless.
