What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

Not everything is autism/ADHD.

If you give your baby (esp < 1 years) screen time regularly (e.g 6 month old with a phone in a pram) you are committing a form of child abuse.

The death penalty needs to be brought back.

Parents who lose their kids to SS due to neglect should be sterilised. A child’s life is not worth the gamble. Yes, get better and do good. No, you don’t get another chance at ruining another kids life.

Children should not be having children.

Swirlythingy2025 · 29/06/2025 01:13

While I do not necessarily agree, in the case of Bonnie Blue, some people might perceive her as "broken" rather than considering factors such as the allure of easy money and greed. Additionally, perspectives on sex can vary greatly; for some, it may simply be viewed as a tool or a means to an end, as Cersei mentioned in Game of Thrones.

tsmainsqueeze · 29/06/2025 01:15

Far too many feckless women get pregnant by equally feckless men and sadly produce children who in time repeat their parents errors.

soupyspoon · 29/06/2025 01:15

This is a long thread so I dont know if this might have been mentioned (probably not as most people disagree with this), but Amy Winehouse = totally overrated.

Plus, people shouldnt wear sports wear for normal wear. Shouldnt be allowed.

Oh and that new developments, new infrastructures, new buildings etc should be built around car use and not deny that people need cars to get around in most areas in the UK.

F1LandoFan · 29/06/2025 01:16

Couples shouldn’t have more than 2 children 😬

PalePinkPeony · 29/06/2025 01:17

That women who have a child under pre school age (3) shouldn’t work full time. That mums with babies under one shouldn’t work at all.

TempestTost · 29/06/2025 01:18

The establishment of the modern state of Israel was a well-meant mistake that was inevitably going to destabilise the ME and will end badly one way or another.

There are a lot of young people who are desperate to have some kind of diagnosis because it makes them feel important and allows them to claim privileges.

Giving teens phones stops them from developing coping skills.

Many people come out of university stupider than they went in.

Those who protest Western involvement in supporting certain countries in the Middle East often overlook the potential consequences of withdrawing all assistance. Without such support, the region or specific countries could face significantly worse conditions, leading to further instability and hardship.

This perspective seems oblivious to figures like Reverend Daniel Woodhouse.

This is a good one.

Particularly childhood cancer. No one wants to think about their child getting cancer and it isn't as rare as some people might think.

Edited

Apparently, more children die from cancer than anything else (according to one of the charity adverts of tv).

By the same token, why allow the future of the country to be shaped by a generation holding mostly outdated views and stereotypes?

Teenager are actually the most likely age group to be conformist in their opinions.

ToWhitToWhoo · 29/06/2025 01:27

The concept of milestone birthdays should be abolished, and we should go back to the old attitude that it's rude to comment on an adult's age.

If you crack down too hard on benefits because some claimants are piss-takers, then you will punish the genuinely vulnerable, while the piss-takers are more likely to work out how to beat the system. In other words, the Oliver Twists will suffer, and the Artful Dodgers will find ways to continue artfully-dodging.

Most nostalgia is false. Or as I always say, 'Things ain't what they used to be- and they never were'.

Smear tests really bloody hurt and we're all in on a collective lie to downplay them because it's important to go and get them done.

soupyspoon · 29/06/2025 01:31

That I dont care for, and neither am I interested in 'your true self'.

I dont care and am not interested in what you identify as, or what your personality quirks are (which you use to define yourself or seek an ND diagnosis with)

Just do your job

Muslims should only be allowed in this country if they follow and agree with our laws completely. Mosques should only be allowed if they allow full and equal integration. No schools should be only, or mainly, run and attended by only one religion, except - at the moment - Christian schools, as we are still officially a Christian country (but even they should let other religions attend as long as they don't want/expect to have their own religious choices catered for). No women should be allowed to wear something that covers their face, except for mouth and nose masks if we are currently suffering from a Pandemic. No women should be made to cover any parts of their body except for what is considered common decency in the UK. No adult immigrants should be allowed to stay in this country after one year, unless they can speak English to a high basic level - unless the adult is a disabled dependant of other legally permitted adults.

I do not believe I am being unreasonable, because if we visit, or move abroad, the countries who bring their severe restrictions here, do not allow us to follow our own cultures and lifestyles whilst in their countries.

Swirlythingy2025 · 29/06/2025 01:34

Why do we treat books filled with fairy tales as if they were factual history? We might as well believe Harry Potter is real.

ToWhitToWhoo · 29/06/2025 01:35

Proportional representation is not a panacea, and extreme forms of it (e.g. in Italy and Israel) are just as damaging to democracy as the extreme opposite,

Forcing people to do things that they hate or are afraid of, may sometimes be necessary. But it doesn't create resilience- more likely either increased vulnerability and fearfulness and 'learned helplessness', or resentful stroppiness. The idea that harshness creates resilience is not a million miles away from the Victorian idea that corporal punishment and exposure to bullying build a boy's 'character'.

merrymelody · 29/06/2025 01:35

Also, that the word fat should never be used as an adjective.

I wish there was a 'strongly disagree button'. Also, please bring back the laughing emoji, to be used when we genuinely like and find the poster's words to be funny - not to be used sarcastically. If misused, we should be banned from Mumsnet for a reasonable length of time.

That symptoms of malnutrition and basically neglect are being misdiagnosed as autism. I’m not at all saying that autism isn’t a real thing. But having worked with disadvantaged families I think kids who have experienced adverse childhood experiences are being misdiagnosed with autism because they have similar symptoms.

Maybe the same idea, but I strongly suspect that what is being called autism (and ADHD too) is really several totally differernt things.

In some cases symptoms that have emerged because of inappropriate environments and trauma. Even things like kids being heavily screen focused at a young age. Essentially having profound long term effects on brain development. Diet could be one of those things too.

If you commit a crime in the UK then you should be deported to the country of your origin, there are over ten thousand foreign nationals in prison here so that would free up some room!

So you want to set free all the dangerous men who have hurt women and children? That sounds fool proof.

People can't and don't change sex; no one was born in the wrong body; women don't have penises

In 99% of cases of you're fat, it's because you overeat compared to your activity level. It's not metabolism, or medication, or illness. You're lying to yourself. It doesn't make you bad or worthless, just fat. I am fat btw

In most cases people can breastfeed if they persevere. It can be bloody difficult, yes, but you were absolutely not, not producing enough milk

A significant number of people need to stop caring about being their kid's friend and setting boundaries.

Children with severe physical and learning difficulties are not in fact better off in mainstream schools. They deserve specialist settings. Integration can happen in other ways

People who regularly buy from shein and temu are selfish, short sighted idiots.

My son is physically disabled, he's in a wheelchair and is bowel incontinent. He has a EHCP including 2:1 TA support and he's thriving at mainstream school.

I don't believe for a second that he'd be better off at special school.
