What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

NC28 · 28/06/2025 19:58

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

People that introduce new partners to their children before a year are idiots.

As someone who (stupidly) did this, I totally agree!

Couldn't agree more. It's so sad to see so many overweight children now. It genuinely has got so much worse over the years.

I don't inherently disagree (stats are stats) - but where are all these fat children? I live in Scotland and I rarely ever see seriously overweight kids.

ChessorBuckaroo · 28/06/2025 23:58

I'm pro torture for certain criminals.

Previously against the death penalty, and still am for those where there is even the smallest shred of doubt, but those who we know for absolute certainty committed the worst of the worst crimes imaginable and have exhibited zero humanity while the victim's families are going through hell I'm all for them receiving medieval style punishment.

Been watching so many real crime documentaries and every now and again a case appears that evokes a visceral reaction at the wickedness on display.

Having kids that you can't wait to send off to school age 4 (or for lots of nursery time even younger) doesn't make sense to me. You/one of the parents should be prepared to be around for them, and should want to be, if it's best for that kid. I used to regularly guffaw at school holiday posts from people who didn't know how to handle having their kids at home. Why bother having them? Something on a tick list?

I get that some kids absolutely thrive in childcare settings, but parents treat school like free childcare, and it really isn't.

Agree completely x box checking and a hindrance for many who do use school as childcare

When my mate's mum started turning off the internet in the day so her workshy brother couldn't play Call of Duty instead of looking for a job he had a paddy and threatened to kill himself. He says he's rather be on benefits than do a shite job.

Kirbert2 · 28/06/2025 23:59

PregnantBarbie · 28/06/2025 23:57

I'm not sure.

The obvious issue would be that those who've become a bit too comfortable like my mate's brother know that all they need to do is appear suitably unstable and unfit to work. It'd be a bold move to call their bluff because the consequences of getting it wrong are unthinkable.

I believe they did and it was eventually scrapped. I don't remember why though.

I agree that those who would be the targeted group would be the ones most likely to come up with a way to avoid it.

After working nearly 40 years in the welfare/benefits sector I can say that there’s a significant proportion of people for whom not working is a choice. There are families where they are on to second generation of non-workers. Very sad to see, and it definitely grinds you down dealing with how entrenched it is.

I've only done eight years as a benefits advisor but totally agree.

Moodershewrote · 29/06/2025 00:00

I can’t stand MAMILS - entitled twats on £10k bikes and ridiculous Lycra all wanking over their Strada personal bests..Fuck off and stop clogging up the roads and riding 3-4 abreast!

It's a tough one for me.

I think they deserve it but I also think it would desensitise those who watch it.

There are a lot of disability fakers than genuine cases.

This has made me feel sad. It's so hard when you know it isn't true and you are one of the people being judged too. It's so sad that a minority of awful people have caused who do fake illness have caused so many to be scrutinised. Misinformation carries so much power.

Cabotine · 29/06/2025 00:03

I juge people who have children with different partners.

I've worked with children for 20 years, in school and youth work settings. Doing mainly sports and activities.

I've seen it change dramatically over the last 10 years especially. So many kids are overweight now.

I'm 37 but even when I was in school there were really only one or two overweight children in a class of 25-30, it's so much more now.
I should add, this is in Ireland. I worked for a few years in France and it wasn't an issue there at all, rarely encountered an overweight child.

Having a pet animal living with you in your home is weird. I love animals, I really do, but I believe they should live outdoors. I’ve never met anyone who agrees.

I do. But you're right, you haven't met me!!!

Mashed potatoes are disgusting.

You are wrong, if I could only have one food for the rest of my life, it would be mashed potatoes 😜

However, looking at your name, if you have only had it with jellied eels then I would have to agree with you.

@NC28 I strongly disagree with generalisations! 🤭

Animals' lives have just as much value as human lives.

Probably more in a lot of cases...

WitchOfSomorrostro · 29/06/2025 00:10

Phew. It's a bit of a personal one. I came to the UK (various reasons, nothing to do with poverty at all, wealthy family, I never claimed any benefits, etc) about 15 years ago. I was about 20 back then. I was oh so progressive back then, UK is the land of freedom, Western free thought, so progressive, democratic, tolerant, amazing.

My own country lived in the middle ages in comparison (or so I thought). It partly did, partly didn't.

So my thoughts.

It's ludicrous. No personal responsibility for ANYTHING. Seems like stuff just 'happens' to people .No fault of their own at all, any circs.

Live with the abusive dickhead? OMG, poor dear. Doesn't matter if before marriage/cohabiting he called you a bitch, slag, ho, told your not to wear makeup, told you your family are shit so you shouldn't speak to them, yadda yadda - it's not your fault, dear, your a victim. I mean.... wtf???? Do women have agency here or not? Do they have brains at all? What is feminism? Don't engage your brain and whatever the hell you do/happens to you is someone else's fault anyway?

Fat people. I was fat myself at one point. Size 22, 2 years after pregnancy. I was a single mother, just divorced. Life wasn't easy. Had mental issues from the past. Gang rape, near death, PTSD. And other stuff. Why I got fat? Because I was busy, lazy, loved junk food and ate lots of it. LOTS. I mean. How is that connected? I had, have and will have mental issues. Also, I don't want to be fat. So I'm not.

Also, inability to call a spade a spade. That's the main reason I'm planning to move back to my 'backwards' EE as soon as it's viable. Islam is a problem. Radical islamists are a problem. Their medieval views, incompatible with Western worldview/lifestyle is a problem. Their treatment of women as someone lower than a dog is a problem. But no, 'you won't find mistreatment of women/girls in Quran', 'real Muslims don't do this', etc. Wtf do I care? I visit a country where I was born and where my parents live every year. And you know what? We don't have terror acts, stabbings (on the whole), acid attacks, honour killings, bombings, grooming gangs. Do we have misogynist rapists? Of course we do, it's not an utopia. But the criminals don't choose the victim because she was a 'worthless white slag' and police treat a crime as a crime and courts punish accordingly. None of the handwhringing 'oooh, it would stoke community tensions' etc.

Ah yes. Men can't be women, women can't be men. If you have a dick - you're a man, vagina - a woman. End of story. You can say you're a 'woman' or a 'man', dress accordingly - that's fine. But you don't gain entrance to women's/men's spaces based on your say so.

We've just been to France and commented on how much thinner people are there.

After living there, I learned the french just have a totally different relationship with food compared to the UK and Ireland. Even down to how and what children eat. It's incredible how different it is.

Swirlythingy2025 · 29/06/2025 00:13

that society should not have to mix with criminals that keep being criminals and there should be eg some sort of island like they used altracz for to ship them off too etc because why should good people have to put up with people that vandalise, terrorise, various anti social behaviours, etc if we want to build a better soicety and if prisons dont stop them or alter their behaviours then they need removing from society

ExercicenformedeZ · 29/06/2025 00:15

That radical Islam is a HUGE problem and it's only going to get worse.
