What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

NC28 · 28/06/2025 19:58

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

That there is no such thing as a god and we should not make allowances in law for religious beliefs.

This is just ridiculous, as well as objectively wrong. They are the ultimate form of potato.

I’d rather have a chip.

Nah roast potatoes are the best ones

Autism and ADHD are being over diagnosed.

This is not a controversial opinion.

Anyone who uses this emoji 😂 in an argument is an uneducated half-wit.

I didn't say I felt weird at any point. Are you confusing me with another poster?

And given my son is now in his early 20s, I think how he was fed as a baby and for how long is completely irrelevant as is any effect on my ego.

You're the one saying others shouldn't breastfeed their babies past the age at which they get teeth. I don't even know why you care how long others breastfeed their babies or not, it's got nothing to do with you.

Well, really. They’re just big, fat chips aren’t they?

Ok controversial but I think opticians should be included in the NHS. It doesn’t make any sense to me that eyes (and teeth as well I guess) have been singled out as the only parts of the body not included under universal healthcare. If your lungs don’t work, hospital. If your eyes don’t work, Specsavers. I can’t understand the reasoning behind this.

I also think it’s utterly baffling that smoking is so demonised now when alcohol is still accepted as such an integral part of our culture. I like a drink as much as the next person but I genuinely think if we were to start over and build society from scratch we probably wouldn’t think it a good idea to build pubs, clubs and bars literally everywhere and accept recreational drinking as normal. Sure there’s health issues caused by smoking but alcohol is just as bad health wise and causes huge societal issues that smoking doesn’t. I don’t think anyone’s ever killed someone getting behind the wheel after a few cigarettes or caused a punch up in the high street because of too much nicotine. Unless you’re teetotal picking on smokers because it smells or whatever the usual complaint is, is hypocritical.

Social media has empowered all the wrong people and, I appreciate the irony, every time I see “well I’m entitled to an opinion” in place of actual facts or logical debate it makes me weep for the future of humanity.

Dogaredabomb · 28/06/2025 22:32

Halal and Kosher slaughter rules are disgusting. As is all meat eating actually.

If you're prepared to eat a steak you have to be prepared to eat your dog too.

All religion is generally misogynistic and appalling.

No children outside of marriage.

Children is the biggest commitment you can make, why people say they’re not ready for marriage but have a kid together blows my mind. Then they wonder why a ring never comes..

Never? Not in my experience. I married DH after DC and 10 years together which is longer than many marriages actually last.

Pubs and alcohol consumption is declining

mylovedoesitgood · 28/06/2025 22:34

Oh yes, how could I forget…

Parents who choose to drive very short distances to take and pick up their kids to and from school just because they can and are basically lazy, should be fined.

PregnantBarbie · 28/06/2025 22:34

YourKookyNavyBee · 28/06/2025 22:33

Pubs and alcohol consumption is declining

But isn't that because it massively spiked over covid period?

LancashireButterPie · 28/06/2025 22:35

We should stop building these huge new estates in the countryside. Urban creep is ruining habitats for wildlife and even eating into farmland. Where are we going to grow food when it's all 4 bedroomed houses?

I'd like to see more apartment blocks built. Esp for young people. My DC would love to move out, despite decent jobs they can't afford the type of houses being built in our area.

There are so many sheltered accommodation flats available but nothing aimed at young adults.

Gowlett · 28/06/2025 22:36

I don’t think that losing a baby / pregnancy before your period is due can be classed as a miscarriage. It’s simply a pregnancy that didn’t take. Testing very early after DTD is madness.

I’ve had a miscarriage. It was terrible. Very terrible…
But this is what I genuinely think about pregnancy testing.

Dogaredabomb · 28/06/2025 22:36

LillyPJ · 28/06/2025 22:30

That there is no such thing as a god and we should not make allowances in law for religious beliefs.

Ah, now I partially agree with you. I do believe there's a God but I think it is an entirely private matter for each person and that it is completely unnecessary to practice any theism outside one's own head/home. Which therefore requires no adjustments to be made.

What if a ring isn't the be all and end all... ? I disagree with marriage on all sorts of levels but I love my kids and so does their dad.

Wolfpa · 28/06/2025 22:37

IVF shouldn’t be given on the NHS,

Greenegg24 · 28/06/2025 22:37

People having controversial opinions about breastfeeding I.e, ‘past x age’ is ‘weird’, that really grinds by gears.

travellinglighter · 28/06/2025 22:38

Negroany · 28/06/2025 20:50

Whatever. I don't think IVF should be funded by the NHS.

If it's caused by illness, treat the illness, if fertility returns, great. If not, that's life (or not). But, IVF still exists, just not publicly funded.

is IVF cheaper than treating the mental health issues caused by infertility? Saying that, the inability to personally fund ivf is an indicator that maybe you can’t afford children.

Cost benefit analysis required.

wastingtimeonhere · 28/06/2025 22:38

Mine are:
Refugees should only get loans for settlement, no access to services without.
Economic Immigrants should have insurance policy to pay for all public services. No way to pay, deported.
You can't change sex.
Under 3s should be with primary caregivers and playgroups accessible from 3 to 5, infant 'childcare' will eventually be viewed in the same way as boarding schools are now, damaging.
In our modern times schools are childcare. It may have been education at one time. It isn't the sole function now. In many cases schools are containing pens, with crowd control being the objective. particularly academies.

WalkingWavy · 28/06/2025 22:39

Very controversial but I think being thin is a choice you can make. You don’t have to live with overweight or obesity

anonymous98 · 28/06/2025 22:39

Wolfpa · 28/06/2025 22:37

IVF shouldn’t be given on the NHS,

This is a surprisingly popular opinion.

I take no offence, but I do have a question. I carry the BRCA2 gene and will need IVF at some point to ensure that I don't pass it on to any of my children. Do people who oppose IVF on the NHS oppose it in all contexts?

(Genuinely not offended - just curious).
