What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

1000 replies

NC28 · 28/06/2025 19:58

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

IVF shouldn't be NHS funded. Infertility is not an illness.

My disability is not an illness- should that not receive NHS treatment?
Infertility is a disability in one way - a body's normal function is not working.

SpiceDad · 28/06/2025 21:53

Mother Teresa was not a good person

gmgnts · 28/06/2025 21:53

There should be a wealth tax on people's assets, like some European countries have (in addition to income tax). That would raise plenty of money so that the government could avoid preying on the disabled and the elderly.
Most livestock farmers couldn't give two hoots about their animals. They're only out there in the fields to make money from.
Too many people are banged up in prison for relatively minor crimes.

I really do not think this is fair.

Having a difficult personality is not the same as having a diagnosable disorder, such as borderline personality disorder, which affects emotional regulation and puts a person at heightened risk of suicide and self-harming. Of course, it's fair to criticise the BPD label (disproportionately given to women; overlaps with autism symptoms etc.)

I also think it is often misdiagnosed. I know someone (woman) who was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder which I didn't agree with, it seemed clear to me it was bipolar and her diagnosis was changed to that a few years later. Other people I know with that diagnosis though are controlling and threatening people who lie through their teeth and expect everyone to bend over backwards for them because they have a 'disorder'.

Only around 60% do. But ‘paying tax’ shouldn’t be linked to voting, or else lots of people wouldn’t have the vote eg disabled people unable to work.

If you are affected by decisions of government, you should have the vote. David Cameron's Brexit vote was a vanity project. He was sure he would win or he would never have gone ahead with it. These people, MPs, who are voted in to do the job of doing to best for the country and the people, and who have all the information about these complex matters are there to make the best choices for the country. He sloped his shoulders. Then ran away. You cannot blame "pensioners" for the outcome. Boris Johnson had massive support, a huge majority. That was all vanity too.

After800Years · 28/06/2025 21:54

Too many people don’t make an effort to make their marriage work and give up too easily. They ‘grow apart’ or ‘fall out of love’ without nurturing the relationship. This is even worse if there are children involved.

(Obviously marriages where abuse/arsehole men etc excused)

Insidenumbernineteen · 28/06/2025 21:54

Bridport · 28/06/2025 21:51

People over state pension age are much more likely to vote that people in the youngest age group. Encouraging younger people to vote would be a much healthier and fairer way to level the playing field.

Obviously your suggestion is more sensible and workable but this is a controversial opinions thread and mine is that old people shouldn’t have a say on a future they won’t be around to see.

Amuseaboosh · 28/06/2025 21:54

That state sanctioned terilisation, male and female should sometimes be an option that is explored as a consequence to prevent more unwanted births.
Often, (not always) these births lead to neglected children and then severely damaged older people who often repeat the cycle of their origin. (I know this doesn't apply to all care leavers.)

I say this as someone who practices Child Protection Law and Private Law Children cases.

My latest client is currently in Care Proceedings with her 5th newly born child. All 4 of her previous children are in care and one is severely disabled due to drug and alcohol abuse throughout the pregnancy. Their suffering is immense.

lavendarwillow · 28/06/2025 21:54

Unless ill, elderly or disabled, people are lazy fuckers if the outside of their house is full of weeds and untidy (same goes for the back garden). No one is too busy to sweep and weed every few weeks.

NC28 · 28/06/2025 21:54

K0OLA1D · 28/06/2025 21:51

Same!!

It was eugenics. Specifically that people lacking intelligence and such like shouldn’t be able to have kids so that we can improve the human race.

If you live in for example a 3 bedroom council house and your children have flown the nest and it's just you living there then you should have to move to a 1 bedroomed council house so a family can have a house that's suitable for their size.

Would you do that? Honestly? Bear in mind it may well not be anywhere near where you currently live or work. Or any support you may have in place.

IceColdFanta · 28/06/2025 21:55

firsttimemum99x · 28/06/2025 21:50

This is so odd because step families/blended families are an incredibly common set up in society. Nothing wrong with a person who becomes a single parent and then goes on to marry and have children with a new partner 🤷🏼‍♀️

and I judge that i don’t agree with blended families either and feel sorry for the kids

Zov · 28/06/2025 21:55

Nccih · 28/06/2025 21:44

Ooh I have quite a few.

  1. Parents overdiagnose their kids with ADHD and then blame every shitty thing their kid does on that, expecting the world to make excuses for the child but making no effort to teach their child how to behave in the world.
  2. Cliquey mums in the playground can be worse than the children.
  3. Sharing your dog with your ex is weird when you hate each other. A pet isn’t worth keeping an asshole in your life, let it go.
  4. Middle class kids can be the worst bullies but it’s only ever acceptable to call out the chavvy ones.
  5. sometimes it IS better for your kids for you to stay in an unhappy relationship (unless violance)
  6. there is no such thing as a happy blended family. There will always be resentment or deep feelings underneath somewhere.

I agree with every one of these. ^

Controversiallyyours · 28/06/2025 21:55

All pet dogs should be compulsorily neutered. Dogs should only be acquired from licensed breeders. Any dogs from other souces should be humanely euthanised. Dog-owners should be subject to a significant license fee, which would be used to fund dog wardens etc. Dogs should be microchipped, and non-compliant dogs should be confiscated.

Cat ownership should be banned from all suburban areas.

Grammar and private schools should be outlawed forthwith. All children should attend their nearest school. This would have the effect of rapidly improving state schools as those with power would be invested in improving state education at their local school.

Prisons should become therapeutic spaces, with the aim of rehabilitating damaged offenders wherever possible, and providing permanent residential care for those who cannot be rehabilitated.

Voting should be compulsory, although spoiling one's ballot paper would be considered a valid political statement and message to our politicians.

Work9to5 · 28/06/2025 21:55

That COVID is an excuse for anxiety etc etc. Frankly, that people need to get off their arses and try a bit harder.

(That’s not an example of an unpopular opinion.)

Animals do not belong to people. Removing them from their families causes them harm, which is why they spend time crying for them, only stopping when they give up hope and instead attach themselves to the human who has made them suffer in this way because 'I want a pet'

No. animals do not belong to people, but I'm guessing you have no idea of what life is like for a stray cat.

That violent sexual predators, active paedophiles and serial rapists should be automatically euthanised once proven guilty. Take the fuckers out of the gene pool rather than spending taxpayer’s money on the expense of incarceration and the ridiculously optimistic - and largely impossible - task of ‘rehabilitation’.

oh yes!!!

Crispyturtle · 28/06/2025 21:56

It’s selfish to enter into a relationship which foists a step-parent on to a minor.

NC28 · 28/06/2025 21:50

I don’t give one shit what a child’s behavioural issues/family trauma/diagnoses/suspected issues etc etc are. If they ever put their hands on my child in order to hurt them, I will ensure my child has my blessing to punch their face in.

Will die on this particular hill.

My DC is autistic. I wouldn't be making any complaints if he hit another child and they hit him back.
