i started senior school in 1977 and have no recollection of pulling my skirt up,
it was quite a long skirt as far as i can remember, and often worn with an embarrassing home knitted jumper! Blush
i guess i wasnt cool

No, I was in high school early 00s/late 90s and skirts were not trendy in my area. We all wore bootleg trousers that were tight on the arse with kickers, pods or rock ports. We had our ties as fat and tiny as we could get away with and our top buttons undone. We slicked our hair back super tight with 2 ridiculous pieces coming down either side of the parting. And we absolutely under no circumstances wore our rucksacks on 2 shoulders. It was deeply uncool. We preferred to have the rucksack on one shoulder despite the pain and the fact we had to pretty much stoop to drag our bags around.

I'm smiling because we wore the fat ties in the '70s. The fashion was to wear a small locket on top of your tie.

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 24/06/2025 22:19

No, longer skirts were the fashion in my day (mid to late 80s) - tight was the thing, rather than short - the fashionable girls would hobble round in pencil skirts with splits in them; those of us who fancied ourselves as intellectual wore long, floaty skirts.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 24/06/2025 22:19

No, went to secondary from 74 - 81 including 6th form. The mini was definitely over and no one wanted to revive it in seventies Liverpool. In fact, the first year uniform was a shortish tunic and wrapover mid-thigh skirt but the rest of the school was firmly decked out in midis. It was all the thing at DD’s school from 2010 - 16.

Very early 90s, long ankle length pleated skirts, with the obligatory carefully curated, rolled down socks. It was the (1st) baggy era, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Denimrules · 24/06/2025 22:21

OP, I'm obvs similar age. It was a midi era at my school and rebellion was not wearing the actual school skirt. The trendy alternatives were midi skirts and pinafores with big buttons of a purely decorative kind.

Bufftailed · 24/06/2025 22:22

Yes. We all did

Absolutely not at our school, I was at an all girls school and we wore A line maxi skirts with thick high waistbands and nurse's belts, along with school wedges or platforms! Grey tights too...gawd...

Ticktockwatchclock · 24/06/2025 22:23

My DD’s used to roll their skirts up very high, so I threatened to bone them if they continued so they couldn’t roll them up at all 😂

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/06/2025 22:24

I don’t think it was the fashion when I was at secondary school - we could wear whatever skirts we wanted in school colours.

westcott · 24/06/2025 22:25

No. 80s secondary school. Very long pencil skirts

HelloDaisy · 24/06/2025 22:27

Tight skirts were the rage in the 80s. I had a pleated one so sewed up all the pleats with my sewing machine!

OntheBorder1 · 24/06/2025 22:27

I was in high school in NZ in the 1970s and yes, we all rolled up our skirts.

Cattenberg · 24/06/2025 22:27

I was at secondary school in the 90s and I did roll my skirt up a few times at the request of a trendy friend. I also remember an older girl shouting at me to roll my skirt up, rather like when the teachers used to shout at people to tuck their shirts in! I'm very short, so my skirt came almost down to my knees, which was considered very 'sad'.

FrangipaniBlue · 24/06/2025 22:28

I used to take mine to a local tailor and use money from my Saturday job to have the hems properly taken up 😂

Never high enough to show my bum mind, just below mid thigh. (School rule was on the knee!)

seaelephant · 24/06/2025 22:29

yup and the fashion was for bandage skirts the size of belts so some girls were just showing full arse

DorothyStorm · 24/06/2025 22:29

High school in the early 90’s. We didn't roll our skirts up. They had to be knee length.

our ties though were often tiny.

TheP1per · 24/06/2025 22:38

In the 90’s my skirt was either a rolled up pencil skirt or a calf length pleated skirt depending on what was popular that year.

Ok… I really want/don’t want to know what your meaning of ‘bone them’ is!

runningonberocca · 24/06/2025 22:54

Yep! Late 80’s early 90’s. Hitched up with braces. The Sock shop sold a great selection of braces I remember!

tillyandmilly · 24/06/2025 22:55

80’s here - nope none if us did - wouldn’t dream of hoisting my skirt up showing my pants!

PinkSwatch · 24/06/2025 22:58

Late 80s, early 90s. No, everyone wore long ankle length A line skirts or culottes.

EveryDayisFriday · 24/06/2025 23:04

Yes, I wore a black short skirt even though the rules were grey knee length skirt.

I didn't care much for the rules at school, I got away with so much bad behaviour because I was in the top sets and sailed through lessons. It was the 90s, everyone smoked. Drugs were rife at our school too.

Thinlyveiled · 24/06/2025 23:07

Yes.

Blackmetallic · 24/06/2025 23:09

1980s - no we didn't roll them up, the fashion for skirts was longer and tighter with a back slit. And the really trendy girls (which was not me) had pale grey skirts. Worn with a large baggy jumper and over-the-knee socks

We had to wear knee length skirts, didn't matter what style - my mum made me wear a frumpy A-line one 😡 I had the last laugh though as I bought a pattern for a tight skirt with a slit and made it in Home Ec, nothing she could do about it 😂
