i started senior school in 1977 and have no recollection of pulling my skirt up,
it was quite a long skirt as far as i can remember, and often worn with an embarrassing home knitted jumper! Blush
i guess i wasnt cool
but i dont think skirts were pulled up in my school

Yes, rolled it over at the waist so had to wear a jumper over the top. Spent much of the time on the verge of overheating, but at least I looked like everyone else 🤣

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 24/06/2025 21:52

I didn't. I spent my whole teen schooldays pulling it down. I was one of the tallest and as thin as a rake, so to get a skirt that fitted me round the waist I had to wear small sizes that were too bloody short already. Bane of my life.

onehorserace · 24/06/2025 21:53

Yes was at school in the early 1970s.

No, early 80s and the fashion was long pencil skirts (with back splits). The school wasn't strict at all, the uniform was navy but lots wore black, I wore a black skirt most of my time there. The boys used to wear the sta-prest trousers and light coloured jumpers skinhead style.

FluffMagnet · 24/06/2025 22:00

Late 90s/early 00s, yes everyone did. My mum actually hemmed my skirt up for me.

cramptramp · 24/06/2025 22:02

Not at high school in the 70’s. Midi skirts were fashionable. The girls I see at my local high school atm look like they are wearing ice skater skirts. Their skirts are tiny!

boodlebeep · 24/06/2025 22:02

Oh yes indeed! I started senior school in 1983 and boy did we roll the waistbands as much as we dared. I was really lucky as my uniform was just a plain navy pencil skirt but the year after I started the dreaded heavy kilt was introduced. Thankfully it was a phased change so didn’t affect us in the years above.

More recently, a friend complained that her daughter rolled her skirt up so she could carry fags in the waistband.

CrushingOnRubies · 24/06/2025 22:03

Day girls rolled them up. The boarders used to cut the skirt to the preferred length then badly rehem it.

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2025 19:57

We used to roll them up.

No. Went to school in the 90s. It was an all girls school so I don’t think anyone cared and I mostly wore trousers anyway except for the one day a week we had to wear skirts to chapel.

ThisHangryTiger · 24/06/2025 22:05

Yes, and also made my tie as small as possible 🤣 late 90's, early 00's.

FloofyKat · 24/06/2025 22:06

I didn’t but some of the girls would roll them up at the waist. This was in the 70s.

Ibelievetheworldisburningtotheground · 24/06/2025 22:07

Yep!

TheCurious0range · 24/06/2025 22:07

Yep and I was head girl 😂
Didn't get away with it though used to have to kneel upright on the floor and if the skirt didn't touch the floor it was too short

OldWomanInACardigan · 24/06/2025 22:08

I was in senior school from 1970 to 1976, and almost all of the girls I knew turned their skirt waistband over and over, to make it shorter. My GDs do the same now.

Jamesblonde2 · 24/06/2025 22:09

No. Looked chavvy then and still does.

charabang · 24/06/2025 22:09

I was at senior school 78-83 and we didn't hoik up our skirts. They were mainly frumpy A line bottle green knee length numbers or a knee length sunray pleat. with legwarmers over knee length nylon socks

namechangedforvalidreasons · 24/06/2025 22:10

Yup, had to cos mine was a crap length (strict parents). But not as far as others dared, I took the view that if you could see the top of the tights you’d gone too short.

ApricotLime · 24/06/2025 22:10

Ì was at school 82-89 and no. It wasn't fashionable to do that at my school. Long skirts were more fashionable

InNewYorkNoShoes · 24/06/2025 22:11

Yes. It barely covered my arse cheeks and on cold mornings I would be freezing but I didn’t care.

WearyAuldWumman · 24/06/2025 22:11

No - apart from anything else, the midi was in at that time. (Attended a Scottish secondary, '72-'78.)

user101101 · 24/06/2025 22:11

No i never understood it and thought it looked cheap! All the other girls did though, 90’s. Maybe someone will explain to me one day

Giggorata · 24/06/2025 22:15

Yes, in the 60s.
Most of us did and occasionally, one of the mistresses would make us all kneel down and measure from knee to hemline.
Woe betide anyone who had anything shorter than the regulation length, I can't remember what it was.

aredcar · 24/06/2025 22:16

No, I was in high school early 00s/late 90s and skirts were not trendy in my area. We all wore bootleg trousers that were tight on the arse with kickers, pods or rock ports. We had our ties as fat and tiny as we could get away with and our top buttons undone. We slicked our hair back super tight with 2 ridiculous pieces coming down either side of the parting. And we absolutely under no circumstances wore our rucksacks on 2 shoulders. It was deeply uncool. We preferred to have the rucksack on one shoulder despite the pain and the fact we had to pretty much stoop to drag our bags around.
