i started senior school in 1977 and have no recollection of pulling my skirt up,
it was quite a long skirt as far as i can remember, and often worn with an embarrassing home knitted jumper! Blush
i guess i wasnt cool
but i dont think skirts were pulled up in my school

Yes

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2025 19:57

We used to roll them up.

turkeyboots · 24/06/2025 19:58

In the 90s, my friends and I went the other way with ankle length skirts. My sister rolled hers up to her bum.
No teachers cared either way!

No. But the ones who liked the risk of their knickers being on display did.

MiloMinderbinder925 · 24/06/2025 19:58

No as we had strict uniform policy.

NuffSaidSam · 24/06/2025 19:59

Yep, rolled it up and then down when walking past the headmaster and then back up again.

Izzabellasasperella · 24/06/2025 19:59

Yes I would turn it up at the waist. Also I unpicked the back seam to create a slit. Classy teen me😀

WillowTit · 24/06/2025 19:59

my own dd now in their late 20s, never even wore skirts, just black trousers
but i did see plenty of their peers with overly short skirts

I didn't but it was a lined, pleated heavy skirt, quite long. No amount of rolling was going to make it better.

Knittedfairies2 · 24/06/2025 19:59

We rolled them up at the waist.

I started grammar school in 1967, aged 11. By 13 all the girls rolled the skirt waistbands over and over to shorten them from the uniform policy of no more than 1/2” above or below the centre of the kneecap. Nobody shortened them to indecent lengths but we did get detention and a letter sent home. Teenage girls at my local comprehensive now seem to wear them as short as their underwear.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 24/06/2025 20:00

Yes absolutely!! But this was 2000s

user1471453601 · 24/06/2025 20:00

I went to school in the 60s. If course I rolled my skirt.

cyvguhb · 24/06/2025 20:00

Yes,totally normal when I was at school

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 24/06/2025 20:01

No. I was a fat kid.
Practically all the other girls did though.

ZiggyPlaysGuitarrr · 24/06/2025 20:01

Yes in the 90's I rolled mine up at the waist. Nearly all the girls did, you were considered 'sad' if you didn't.

theresbeautyinwindysun · 24/06/2025 20:01

Oh yes I rolled mine up!

MedievalNun · 24/06/2025 20:02

Yup. And discovered the hack that if you wore the regulation ‘gym’ skirt (pleated short tennis skirt) then nobody said anything. Weirdly in 6th form I swapped to long, fishtail skirts but we are talking the ‘80s so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pinkrosesyellowroses · 24/06/2025 20:02

No, but we were all girls (in the 80s) so I guess that’s maybe why it never seemed to occur to anyone.

WillowTit · 24/06/2025 20:02

perhaps the 70s and 80s were different, or i was completely clueless!

SirChenjins · 24/06/2025 20:03

Yes - and then skirts went long and skin tight with a slit up the back, so down it came and the seams taken in. 80s here.

namechangeGOT · 24/06/2025 20:03

Yep! And when I drop my son off at school in a morning I can the girls all do the same!

SisterTeatime · 24/06/2025 20:03

I didn’t but yes, lots of girls did - mainly sporty girls with nice legs. then the school changed the uniform to a much nicer, longish kilt and some girls wore it very long instead, to be different I suppose.

We still had to do cross country in our gym knickers with all the boys watching. Traumatising!

Itiswhysofew · 24/06/2025 20:03

Definitely not. We had a strict uniform code. Our headmaster was always around keeping his beedy eye on us, hollering "keep to the left!"Grin

Actually, mini skirts weren't the fashion when I was at school.
