I’m so deeply ashamed of my generation.

So am I
what is wrong with these selfish fools the majority will have children & grandchildren do they not want a fairer more equal country with citizens who are supported nurtured & able to make the most of opportunities Farage & his ilk will tear down every safeguard we have it’s not the future I want for my grandchildren.
I’m so pissed off with Labour this proposed Bill is just so bloody stupid ill thought out fecking nonsense I’ve been a Labour Party member for more years than I care to remember my loyalty is being sorely tested.

I’m so deeply ashamed of my generation.

If Margaret Thatcher is re-elected as prime minister on Thursday, I warn you.

I warn you that you will have pain–when healing and relief depend upon payment.

I warn you that you will have ignorance–when talents are untended and wits are wasted, when learning is a privilege and not a right.

I warn you that you will have poverty–when pensions slip and benefits are whittled away by a government that won’t pay in an economy that can’t pay.

I warn you that you will be cold–when fuel charges are used as a tax system that the rich don’t notice and the poor can’t afford.

I warn you that you must not expect work–when many cannot spend, more will not be able to earn. When they don’t earn, they don’t spend. When they don’t spend, work dies.

I warn you not to go into the streets alone after dark or into the streets in large crowds of protest in the light.

I warn you that you will be quiet–when the curfew of fear and the gibbet of unemployment make you obedient.

I warn you that you will have defence of a sort–with a risk and at a price that passes all understanding.

I warn you that you will be home-bound–when fares and transport bills kill leisure and lock you up.

I warn you that you will borrow less–when credit, loans, mortgages and easy payments are refused to people on your melting income.

If Margaret Thatcher wins on Thursday–
– I warn you not to be ordinary
– I warn you not to be young
– I warn you not to fall ill
– I warn you not to get old.

Such a brilliant speech. To no avail.

BIossomtoes · 25/06/2025 16:21

Wonderful speech. And here we are.

Wonderful speech. And here we are.

I sent it to my (Labour) MP.

Karistyleaftea · 25/06/2025 16:46

The Tory's austerity years helped no one.
We need a good economy to be able to properly support all those who genuinely need it .
That will require people being prepared to go to work and also businesses to start paying a decent living wage and paying proper taxes.
In my opinion.

I am so cross with the oldies who are voting Reform.
Honestly! They have the time to read up on Farage, Tice & co and they seem very misled by what they are reading in the press, compared to the truth of what Reform are actually all about .
Good to see the workers and the students still very much with the Labour party though.

Much good may it do them.

Well yes. They are the minority. We will have Reform governments based on this, or Tory ones based on these polls.

I'd vote LibDem myself.

derxa · 25/06/2025 18:33

bombastix · 24/06/2025 21:05

Well it’s not being taken as that. It’s been presented as a “vote of confidence” by the Government, ie a vote of confidence in Keir Starmer. So his opponent see it correctly, imo, and they will exploit it.

So you think Keir’s coat’s on a shoogly peg? He’s got a huge majority and there’s a long way to go till the next election. God knows what will happen in the meantime.

PandoraSocks · 25/06/2025 18:50

"Some MPs say they have been threatened with suspension and even deselection in four years’ time if they vote against the bill, while others say party managers have told them they see it as a vote of confidence in the government. Downing Street has denied those claims"

From the Guardian.

bombastix · 25/06/2025 19:23

It’s not an actual VNOC. But to lose would be very damaging.

Saw this picture of Starmer today; he looked bloated, glassy eyed and tired. The man has aged a decade in less than a year.

Also that mildly crazy expression all PMs have when they’ve got power. They all get that, the ultimate drug. No, he’s not leaving. Like all PMs he would have to lose or be forced out.

Karistyleaftea · 25/06/2025 19:32

Tory's are old news and Reform will never govern UK.
In my opinion.

LlttledrummergirI · 25/06/2025 19:51

I agree. The Conservatives and Reform are trying desperately to stay relevant at the moment and they are in the media a lot so getting people's attention. When we get nearer an election, we'll start to hear more from the other parties, tactical voting may come into play, but the loud minority will fail in my opinion.

No surprise, he got handed a poison chalice, dealt with riots and now has the worry of WW3 thanks to the orange buffoon.

Remember how much happier and lighter Sunak looked after losing the election.

Yes he looked liked someone with a terrible job under a huge amount of stress. All PMs age in the job (except Truss) but less than a year!

There is a lot of criticism coming at him from what’s left of the progressive media. None of it is supportive. Kendall and Reeves had better be right, because the political costs of their policies is huge.

Not only this but he’s been clocking up a huge number of air miles, particularly since January and has been criticised if he as much as thinks about going on holiday. He must be exhausted.

DuncinToffee · 25/06/2025 20:01

Every time he plans a holiday, it get cancelled.

They really aren't all the same

Given that Boris Johnson barely worked (except in the bedroom) and then Dominic Raab's refusal to cancel a holiday, it has set a tone that any holiday for a politician is somehow wrong.

EXC - No10 is set to offer concessions to Labour rebels on welfare. Talks are ongoing but changes could be made to Pip reforms.

A number of cabinet ministers are now said to believe the bill has no chance of passing in its current form

Even Truss did!

LlttledrummergirI · 26/06/2025 08:24

Truss had a public breakdown, the job seems to have broken her.

bombastix · 26/06/2025 08:30

It breaks everyone that does it. Nobody can possibly be doing it for the money (too little given the responsibility) so they are in it for the power.

The only PM I have seen who seemed relatively unscathed was Boris Johnson. But that was because he did nothing in the role. He took the title, but not the challenge

ilovesooty · 26/06/2025 08:40

I don't think Cameron seemed to age much but my memory might be at fault.
Starmer doesn't look well or happy and I wonder whether he regrets it.
I don't think there's any chance Farage would take on the job or do it for any length of time. He'd get out citing health issues, I imagine.

bombastix · 26/06/2025 08:47

Starmer looks like a man who has a lot of late nights and diplomatic dinners. The man is now quite porky and his collar size is up. He is doing quite well with the UK’s international challenges but domestically it is not good.

I admire him for sticking with Reeves, but the longer this goes on, the I think that is misplaced. She appears to be a lunatic who, because she cannot change tax policy meaningfully, is driving policies which are dividing Labour.
