Unfortunately, I didn’t have to look him up, as I already know what a mendacious, self-serving, full of hot air, community-dividing pillock he is Sad
Joining Reform doesn’t surprise me at all, as he no doubt hopes there are enough “I’m not racist me, but……” people in his constituency to vote for him.

He lost his seat last year I think.

Yes! Despite all the pro-Reform threads on MN, Reform has slipped from its high point. The only way is down, baby...

The closer you get to a sewer, the more you smell the shit

I've just read that John Redwood has complained that the offer to loan us the Bayeux Tapestry (not from Bayeux, not a tapestry) means that we will be reminded that the Normans forced us into serfdom.

Suddenly Brexit makes sense.

How/why did we think these people were sane enough to govern anything?

It was a constituency where Reform split the right wing vote. He had a huge majority in 2019 so he’s clearly read what he thinks is the writing on the wall. The only surprise is that it took him so long.

bombastix · 10/07/2025 08:37

It looks like the one in, one out agreement will be agreed between the UK and France.

i wonder what the Tories and Honest Bob will say on that one. Given they wanted pretty much the same deal but didn’t get it, we can add it to the bunch of sour grapes they keep eating on international matters.

Jake Berry was Boris Johnson’s wing man, a true believer and heavily involved in his campaign la to be PM. If he’s gone, I’d assume that any “Johnson cometh over the water” to rescue the Tories is off

Er, what he means is the Normans abolished slavery.

Where does he learn his history ? Grok ?

Its a small number (initially) but will be interesting to see how it functions.

Good god. Redwood should stick to economics.

The chances are that the Bayeux Tapestry was made in Kent.

Also, some history; www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/wicked-william-the-conqueror

Careful - you might start seeing the word genocide, and have the York tourist board getting proscribe.

I think the use of family connection will be key. This is not quite the same as the UK considering an asylum application being made in France, but it is close to that.

It will give the UK a measure of control in theory. Depending on how it’s administered by us.

I also agree with the French on the UK’s black economy which is looking out of control. We need to deal with that ourselves.

I briefly saw a headline that seemed to suggest there was a Trumpian solution being brewed up whereby the EU refuses to give aid to countries who "provide" a large number of asylum seekers.

Sort of a human equivalent of tariffs I guess ?

That is quite radical! The human tariff…..I did hear that basically the UK would stop granting visas for entry for countries that prompt a lot of unwarranted asylum claims. That it could do lawfully, I think. Some countries do not accept returns or there are additional issues with accepting criminals at the end of their UK sentence, so potentially that would be very effective.

If the UK was as rich as it once was, imagine the power it would have for good.

Still at least we got a glut of stately homes to show for it. Beats humanity any day. And you can offset it against tax.

bombastix · 10/07/2025 09:29

I’m not sure we’ve really ever been good in that way. We did decide some good things when Britain lead the world, but really, we are a bunch of pirates with good manners.

It always amuses me when you look at these stately places; designed to keep you dazzled, but always a robber barons den. From the British Museum to the Houses of Parliament.

DuncinToffee · 10/07/2025 09:37

A large percentage (60/70) of refugees come from countries the UK had colonised

Sorry, I meant any future constituency he is parachuted into. He will have learned the lessons from his previous one to dial up the racist rhetoric as Reform. He knows what will be successful in some demographics where there is a misunderstanding of what Reform actually stand for, voter apathy unless it’s Against something (foreigners, people with disabilities, ‘woke’…..) and existing community tensions.
Plus, “knighted by Boris” will confer a golden glow to this particular turd for some.

Perhaps they'll parachute him into Sunak's constituency if he resigns.

Notonthestairs · 10/07/2025 11:00

i dont see Sunak resigning soon. I imagine he's like May in that he's loyal to the Conservative party and wouldnt want to risk a by-election. That said he has the safest Tory seat in the country so maybe he wouldnt see it as a risk.

Notonthestairs · 10/07/2025 11:01

having typed that out you can safely assume Sunak will resign by lunchtime today.

DuncinToffee · 10/07/2025 11:13

Would Sunak's money keep him safe in the US?

Trump is talking about "deporting" US citizens.

And I can't see any company - techbro or not - sticking it's neck out to intervene if Rish turns out not to be the Dishi. Bearing in mind this more is much more about Mrs Sunak.

placemats · 10/07/2025 11:36

Akshata Murty, Mrs Sunak, has Indian citizenship and despite living in California for a long time, India does not allow duel citizenship.

DuncinToffee · 10/07/2025 12:02

Former North Wales Tory MP David Jones also joined Reform earlier this week.
