I knew someone who did live miles away from family up north to find a job and a new career in the south east , but it suited them to do this.

Normo Tebbs and Mrs. T. lived in a world where women were definitely supposed to do whatever their master told them. They fetishised the nuclear family to a degree unseen in western politics since National Socialism in Germany.

Alexandra2001 · 08/07/2025 12:19

Long before Tebbit came out with the 'bike rubbish, people having been travelling for work/better their lives, even leaving the UK.

He was a vile man and I'll not be shedding a tear at his passing.

placemats · 08/07/2025 13:08

Well @PickAChew I too was surprised to hear of his death because I thought he'd already died.

The bike thing is about his father I believe. He was from a poor background, made good.

Not a fan either, but he's been unwell for many years and on Radio 4 this morning a person being interviewed said it was probably for the best that he died. I'll leave that there.

BIossomtoes · 08/07/2025 13:10

The one thing I totally respect is his care for his wife who suffered life changing injuries in the Brighton bombing. He was apparently devoted and hands on.

pointythings · 08/07/2025 13:11

FFS resident doctors voting for strike action. I don't support them this time round. They're behaving like all the other people who want everything fixed in 5 minutes.

BIossomtoes · 08/07/2025 13:15

I don’t support them either. It’s spectacular inability to read the room, I can’t see any public support for them now if they’ve lost people like us.

placemats · 08/07/2025 13:18

Yes resident doctors can do one as far as I'm concerned.

Alexandra2001 · 08/07/2025 13:22

Without these Doctors, the NHS can't reform or improve, their pay is still way below where it should be and numbers leaving are still far too high.

This needs addressing, whether its supported or not.

Though its telling the vote turn out was just 55%, so feeling is not as high as it once was.

fwiw my DD is happy with the 3.8% she has been offered.

SerendipityJane · 08/07/2025 13:50

Meanwhile, in an AIBU waiting to happen, after me just emailing my MP, I get a 2-page 100gsm reply via second class post, in a House of Commons envelope.

So if I have any accessibility needs, that is me fucked.

The back side of each page was blank too. So that's a total and utter waste of resources. This from an administration that pretends to care about the environment as an excuse to raise revenue.

I watched see them properly paid, but they need to learn patience. We now live in a world where valuable HCAs get pennies more than NMW. There are other priorities. I am not complaining about my 3.6%.

RIP to Norman Tebbit, holder of the record for "Most self-damning argument in history" for that time when he said we shouldn't allow same-sex marriage because he might marry his own son to avoid inheritance tax.

To be fair he was devoted to his wife after the IRA bombing left her severely disabled.

However, it's hard to point out that had he been Joe Bloggs whose wife had (say) MS that confined her to a wheelchair then Tory government 1979-1997 was not your friend.

Macron, on his state visit, is about to address Parliament.

DuncinToffee · 08/07/2025 17:02

Sunak has landed a job as advisor for Goldman Sachs, he will be alright for benefits.

Macron is the first European leader to visit since Brexit

Won't stop him sponging off the taxpayer though.

As do I.

Disagreed with his politics profoundly. I recognise the influence he had though.

Rishi Sunak will stand down at the next general election I think.

It might well be a by-election. Goldman Sachs California here we come. Can't imagine he has any heft left in the Tory Party.

PandoraSocks · 09/07/2025 07:18

Hasn't Sunak got enough money? I find it strange how some very rich people just want more and more money. It is an addiction, I suppose.

Time to start means-testing MP's/PM's pensions?

DuncinToffee · 09/07/2025 13:51

I haven't watched PMQs but this is funny

https://bsky.app/profile/maxbrockbank.com/post/3ltjqg4o2jc27

The Speaker of the house has excellent comic timing.

Starmer at PMQs: "We will continue to go after the fraudsters, the grifters and the con artists, no matter who they are or where we find them!"
Mr Speaker: "Nigel Farage!"

pandora socks
A good line in a film about money ( ‘A real pain )
’ money is heroin for rich people ‘
I guess that it may well be for some , especially if they have a lot of expensive outgoings or just addicted to having more of it.

I keep meaning to watch that film. I love Kieran Culkin.
