Does everyone love going to the beach?

TV this morning saying we all love the beach, we all can’t wait to head down to the beach, we’re all looking forward to sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun.

I can’t think of anything worse on a hot day. I hate it. Hate the sand, hate the sea, hate the journey to get there, stuck in traffic in a car then finding somewhere to park etc. Hate being surrounded be people with their music blaring, hate standing in a long queue at a beachside restaurant to get food. Hate walking for miles to the toilet.

I know I sound like a misery but I cant be the only one….

I love the beach. But preferably on a cold Winters day, when it's empty. The thought of sitting on a packed beach in the baking sun does absolutely nothing for me. I'm with you OP.

Hdpr · 20/06/2025 08:20

Absolutely love it and so do my kids. It’s part of childhood I think

BeeCucumber · 20/06/2025 08:21

I loved the beach when I was younger but wild horses couldn’t drag me there now.

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2025 08:21

No hate it.

It's either too windy and cold in a gets in your bones way. Or it's too warm and I sunburn too easily. It's boring.

And I've not even mentioned sand yet.

Ohmych · 20/06/2025 08:21

I love the beach but don't like going when it's too hot it's not fun then

TranceNation · 20/06/2025 08:23

I'm a beach person. Love a stroll across a beach or reading a book. The sounds are soothing, but anything above 25 degrees then I find it not enjoyable. Same with DH and the kid as they will play with a football or cricket bat but again for my son if it gets too hot he wants to go home not after long.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 20/06/2025 08:24

Only if it has pebbles ( preferably fossilferous), sea glass and very few other occupants. Oh yes, and no onshore breeze. The perfect beach in Pas de Calais blew me away literally after ten minutes.

InfiniteArmyofOctopi · 20/06/2025 08:25

Not many of those things apply to our nearest beach - we get the train so no parking hassle etc, it’s a v big beach so I have never seen it overcrowded, there is no beachside restaurant or shop so we bring our own food, there are plenty of toilets, and there are two more tacky resorts nearby which tend to attract the music blaring type people.
However I do understand not everyone loves the beach! DS (17) doesnt.

Actually this is what puts me off beaches. Fecking people wacking bloody balls around. One always hits on me as I’m reading my book and the inevitable “sooorrreee”. No you’re clearly not sorry fuck off to a park if you want to play football or cricket.

That and dogs. Another thing people can’t seem to control properly.

Ugh.

LuckysDadsHat · 20/06/2025 08:29

My kids love the beach so I drag myself down there. I hate the sand. It gets everywhere, it makes my feet and legs itchy and I just burn straight away. I literally camp under a beach umbrella and let the kids get on with the playing.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 20/06/2025 08:31

Not really. Too many annoying people there at this time of year. I like an off season empty stretch of sand.

LittleAlexHornesPocket · 20/06/2025 08:31

Fellow beach hater here. Just like Anakin Skywalker I hate sand. It gets everywhere and feels horrible. There's no shelter from the sun and I'm not a strong swimmer so can't go too far in the sea.

Give me a lovely forest stroll any day.

Dryshampoofordays · 20/06/2025 08:32

Take Talcum powder to de-sand at the end and your beach days will be happier! Love the beach, but don’t live close to one so it’s very much a novelty when we do go

SuperTrooper14 · 20/06/2025 08:33

Spending an entire day day at the beach is not my idea of fun. Hate the sand! Give me a nice clean sun lounger and a clear blue pool any day.

HurdyGurdy19 · 20/06/2025 08:33

I love the idea of a beach, but hate it when I'm actually there, for all the reasons mentioned above - and eating sandy food? No thanks.

A romantic stroll along a beach? Nope. I can't walk on sand, and I don't like getting feet and lower legs sandy

latetothefisting · 20/06/2025 08:35

It's my absolute favourite thing to do BUT
the key is living near enough to be able to walk there so don't have any (or very few) of the negatives you describe. No need to worry about parking or traffic. Don't stay long enough to need food or loo, just take a cold bottle of water (or beer!) and maybe some fruit. Headphones for people playing annoying music. Even if you dont like the sand/sea there's a grassy bit before the beach you can sit on and still get the benefit of the fresh breeze.

Swim, dry off reading book, bit of talc gets rid of sand, amble back home. Ideal.
Sometimes come back again in the evening to watch the sunset.

Ha, well I hate crowds on the beach and our local beach is like a mile long so we stroll a good 20 mins up the beach till we get to a secluded groyne where people are too lazy to walk to. Dh and ds can then exercise in peace.

EndorsingPRActice · 20/06/2025 08:36

Not keen on summer beach holiday days, too hot, no shade, sand and more sand. Love walking along the beach not in the summer. And enjoyed taking kids to the beach when they were young as they loved it so.

Is this how you clean the car? By putting talc on your feet? Not really seeing how this gets it out the foot well.

bloodredfeaturewall · 20/06/2025 08:37

love it
but wouldn't go there for the whole day.
live very close to one so on hot days can just go for a quick walk or dip.

MissAmbrosia · 20/06/2025 08:38

I love the beach - but only when it involves an umbrella, a cushioned sun lounger and nice young man who brings cold water and aperol spritzes. And where you can book a table for lunch. Ball games and sand in every crevice, not so much.

SushiDisco · 20/06/2025 08:42

I loveeeee the beach, live about 5 minutes away and could never live in a city far from a beach.
We spend alot of time there.

I have to admit I hate it during tourist season though, it’s far too busy to enjoy it.

CuriousKangaroo · 20/06/2025 08:44

Love the beach! But like you I dislike some of the stuff that goes with beaches - crowds, others’ music, queues for fish and chips etc. Totally different story abroad on a quiet beautiful beach though. Some of my favourite memories are going to stunning beaches and swimming in the sea.

NW3Lady · 20/06/2025 08:45

I hate it and that’s not even adding children into the mix.

Used to do that as kids. I’d forgotten that advice.
