Does everyone love going to the beach?

TV this morning saying we all love the beach, we all can’t wait to head down to the beach, we’re all looking forward to sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun.

I can’t think of anything worse on a hot day. I hate it. Hate the sand, hate the sea, hate the journey to get there, stuck in traffic in a car then finding somewhere to park etc. Hate being surrounded be people with their music blaring, hate standing in a long queue at a beachside restaurant to get food. Hate walking for miles to the toilet.

I know I sound like a misery but I cant be the only one….

I love being BY the sea but not on the beach. EVER. Just the same as others with all the crowds, noise, dogs, footballs, crying kids, and best of all SAND!

I'm done with the beach experience, did it for long enough with kids and they are fab memories, but now..... not a chance.

I am lucky enough to live within half an hour or so from several big beach/seaside areas. I go there in the week (retired now), and walk along the parallel walkways/prom for a few kms. Sit on a bench with a takeaway croissant and coffee. Take it all in. There is no downside to that.

BunnyLake · 20/06/2025 09:05

I can only tolerate a beach if I have a lounger with a big umbrella and a waiter coming round asking if you’d like a drink or snack (went to a hotel with it’s own private beach once lol).

I live a five minute walk from the beach and haven’t stepped foot on it for about ten years. I do absolutely love a promenade though.

MermaidMummy06 · 20/06/2025 09:06

I'm a native Qld'er, where hot is you stand in the sun & burn to a cinder in two minutes in peak summer. Although beach crowding can be avoided here.

I've never understood why people go to the beach in that weather. Most sit under cabanas now, and the breeze & water are refreshing, BUT the heat reflected off the sand is horrific and the dance over hot sand is painful. It's much nicer in the mountains.

It's so popular people pay massive amounts of money to go on hols in summer. We used to as kids, and we'd be out swimming at 6am & 4pm & indoors other than that! We go in spring.

Greenartywitch · 20/06/2025 09:08

I live in a seaside town and love the beach and swimming.

Thankfully it is quiet enough, even in the summer to have a peaceful and relaxing time :).

RedSheepsss · 20/06/2025 09:09

I love the beach! I live nearby and I go often, especially with DC. I love swimming, sitting, walking, beachcombing. Love it.

Lottapianos · 20/06/2025 09:10

'I love walking along a promenade'

Me too! You get all the best bits of the beach - sound of the waves, smell of seaweed, bracing air - but none of the sand and crowds and noise and all the rest

No idea why people go to the beach when it's scorching hot 🥵, looks absolutely miserable

MrsAlgernon · 20/06/2025 09:10

I do love going for a day trip to a beach with kids and their friends once or twice a year. Watching kids go nuts and play with sand forever, watching even morose teenager becoming a little kid again. Novelty of sea air. Chips or ice cream. Going back home with all the stuck sand everywhere.

But no, we'd never choose hotel+beach as holiday destination. We have better things to do than to lie around and turn into rotisserie chicken for a week.

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 20/06/2025 09:11

I grew up in the beach so I like it. I feel like you about people who say they love snow. It can only be because of childhood memories, no one can really love snow...

TheChosenTwo · 20/06/2025 09:11

I do love the beach, preferably when I’m on my own! When it’s sunny and warm I’d happily sit and watch the waves for hours, I find it really calming and grounding. When it’s cold I like a walk along the seafront and then a swim.
Unfortunately I rarely get the opportunity to go on my own 😂
But we don’t do beach days in the summer, can’t imagine anything worse, mainly because of the traffic.

Promenades are one of my most favourite things in the world, really good for my general well being. The most gorgeous one I’ve ever been on is Montreux promenade, it’s like being in heaven.

It’s a lake but no matter, it’s stunningly beautiful.

HairyToity · 20/06/2025 09:13

I also don't love the beach, but DH does. The kids also quite like it. I'm always outnumbered.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 20/06/2025 09:13

I hate it too! Bloody sand!

BastardesEverywhere · 20/06/2025 09:14

Love the beach. We live within walking distance of our local beach and a 5/10 min drive from a number of others so I'm there at least twice a week.

We're in a tourist area but there are beaches and sections of beaches here that tourists aren't too familiar with. And we absolute know the top 2 or 3 beaches to avoid for all of August!

We use the beaches all year round. Full on hot beach day. Nip down at 5pm in the summer months for a quick dip. Morning or evening walks in all weathers. Wellies and waterproofs in winter.

I can't imagine not living near the coast and seeing the sea every day.

DinoLil · 20/06/2025 09:15

Nope. Not a fan. There again, I've lived a short walk from beaches my whole life so maybe it doesn't have any novelty.

TheDandyLion · 20/06/2025 09:16

Love it in the winter, hate it in the summer.

sugarapplelane · 20/06/2025 09:17

The only thing a beach is good for is a lovely walk at sunrise or sunset when the crowds are low and the weather balmy.
Apart from that - no thank you.

Anzena · 20/06/2025 09:20

I often look at the press pics of crowded beaches in hot weather. Now seriously -has anyone ever seen anything as off putting as thousands of people sitting/lying cheek by jowl (or arse by elbow) on a packed beach. I can't really think of anything worse.

Could someone please tell me how that is fun 😊

Livingthedream1978 · 20/06/2025 09:22

No. I hate sand and am not really keen on the sea as I am scared of fish! Unfortunately I have a family of beach lovers!!

I spend my time there sat on a towel or in a chair avoiding the sand as much as possible and reading a book. I will go for a paddle and play ball games with the kids for a bit (now mid-late teens) but make my husband do most of the entertaining as he’s the one that wants to be there. My family all find it hilarious!

sallydoodlecat · 20/06/2025 09:23

Love walking along it or by it or watching a sunset. But every time we've tried to spend a day at the beach as a family we give up. Sand everywhere. Too hot. Give me a sun lounger by a pool any day. Dip in and out when you want without dealing with the sand

ReignOfError · 20/06/2025 09:31

The beach in summer is my idea of hell. Winter walks on uncrowded beaches are great.

Doitrightnow · 20/06/2025 09:34

I don't especially like it. The sand gets everywhere and I hate sunbathing - but if there's shade I'll happily read my book. And I like walking along the coast with a sea view. DC loves it so I enjoy their enjoyment.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 20/06/2025 09:36

Dryshampoofordays · 20/06/2025 08:32

Take Talcum powder to de-sand at the end and your beach days will be happier! Love the beach, but don’t live close to one so it’s very much a novelty when we do go

Dmum taught me this years ago - gets rid of the sandy feet and walking issue. Last year was using it and quite a few peopel walked past and said what a good idea it was.

I liked it last years as I finally got myself swim leggings (and swim period pants) and swim tops - wish I'd done it years ago TBH and I refused to be one watching stuff on beach. Also helps when on hoilday we have accomodation nearby so aren't there all day.

Day trips are harder - no car - but like walking on beaches or Promenades next to them but going to sea not really as possible.

Alo hate eating on beach - sand in food isn't nice but was a common issue in my childhood.

babystarsandmoon · 20/06/2025 09:37

I don’t mind a walk around the beach and some fish and chips but I’m not sitting on the sand all day.

Sulking · 20/06/2025 09:38

I love the idea. Hate actually being there.

hate the sea, stings my legs, always something minging hanging about like jellyfish or those stupid fish under the want that stab you.

sand feels awful, it’s too hot, too sweaty. Feels like you’re on a one way ticket to heatstroke.

but my kids love it, so we do it for them.

DejaMooo · 20/06/2025 09:40

Absolutely love it and so does my daughter. My husband is an absolute misery though when we go. Hates everything about it.
