Does everyone love going to the beach?

TV this morning saying we all love the beach, we all can’t wait to head down to the beach, we’re all looking forward to sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun.

I can’t think of anything worse on a hot day. I hate it. Hate the sand, hate the sea, hate the journey to get there, stuck in traffic in a car then finding somewhere to park etc. Hate being surrounded be people with their music blaring, hate standing in a long queue at a beachside restaurant to get food. Hate walking for miles to the toilet.

I know I sound like a misery but I cant be the only one….

I love the beach but in winter, not when it's busy. I love the bracing sea air and the sound of waves crashing onto the shoreline. Very good for the soul. We went to south wales in March and the weather was amazing - warm enough for a t shirt and cardigan, but barely anyone around. The dogs absoulutely loved it. But summer - nah.

I love walking along a promenade (and do that at least once a month) and walking along sandy beaches. I’ll quite happily sit and read a book, and maybe have a dip, but after an hour or so, I’m done.

My dh is mesmerised by the sea and it physically calms him. I like it, but it doesn’t have that effect on me.

GentleSheep · 20/06/2025 08:49

It's a no from me. Dislike having to cover myself in sunscreen and clothes in order to prevent sunburn, and sit under a beach umbrella - am very fair. I grew up by the seaside, I think off season when it's cooler is not too bad, the sound of the waves is wonderful, but these days as an adult just can't be doing with it, especially not getting sand in everything.

Sassybooklover · 20/06/2025 08:49

I live by the beach but sitting on a beach in the heat, surrounded by the masses, isn't my idea of fun! I prefer a walk down the promenade, stop for an ice cream and sit on a bench! I like cold, crisp walks in the winter too.

peidhDassffeks · 20/06/2025 08:50

I have young children and I love their joy in it - running through the waves, sandcastles etc but other than that I’m not a fan and even with kids it has its downsides when they’re covered in sand and need suncream on

OMG I love the beach, i am from a seaside town so its in my blood

But tbh, how you describe the beach sounds nothing like the one we go to.

In fairness, there are no toilets or resturants or people really. I love nothing more than finishing work, packing the car with sandwiches and crisps and heading to the beach for until sunset.

We have a bag always packed ready to grab with towels, sandbuckets, balls, kite, swim wear., 5 litre bottle for water,

I am raging we are busy tonight and cant head off

Yes here I lived by the sea my favourite time was when it was chilly therefore empty and having walks along the promenade

okydokethen · 20/06/2025 08:51

I don’t like it, my back really hurts sitting on the pebbles - I have purchased a granny chair but sometimes people throw an adhoc fun outing to sit on the beach and it is torture to me.
i don’t like there being no shade, I don’t know what to do for more than an hour on a beach and the water is filthy in the UK and watching my children frolic, having their best day ever is tampered by the knowledge that they swim in poo.

Cityzen74 · 20/06/2025 08:52

I dislike the beach in the summer - I find it quite boring and I hate sand getting everywhere. Quite like a blustery walk in the winter as long as have the right footwear on!

BusySittingDown · 20/06/2025 08:52

I like the idea of a deserted beach. I like a walk along the sand and a paddle in the sea.

The reality is always different. It's always too crowded and too...erm...sandy 😄.

Lifelife · 20/06/2025 08:53

My son hates it but he is autistic

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 20/06/2025 08:54

I love the beach but never do all day. We usually turn up at about 4.00 with a picnic tea. Easy to park as lots of people leave after their 6-8 hours on the beach. Do a bit of body boarding and swimming, read a bit, eat. Go home. We live close enough that we don’t need to cram a year’s worth of beach days into one holiday.

Mikart · 20/06/2025 08:54

I like walking on it when there's no one elsewhere there. But I would never go and sit on it on a day like today.

merrymelody · 20/06/2025 08:56

Going to the beach with anyone under the age of 12 is a nightmare. Otherwise, it depends on the beach.

sonoonetoldyoulifewasgonnabethisway · 20/06/2025 08:56

Nope, can't stand sand, don't like the water, no shelter, it will be heaving the next few days, i'd rather go for a picnic in a park or stay at home

I like the beach on holiday though, not sure why, maybe its different, still don't like the sand though

turkeyboots · 20/06/2025 08:57

I have miles of beautiful beach within 5min and we almost never go in the summer sun. Parking is impossible, there are no loos, the water is cold all year round. Much nicer for a walk on a bright winters day.

Felmerbud · 20/06/2025 08:57

I love the beach ! Am so lucky to live a very short drive away from several, my favourite thing to do - have a swim and people watch 😊

grizzlyoldbear · 20/06/2025 08:57

I don't like sunbathing, but love the feeling of getting in the sea and drying off in the perfect temperature when it is 21 or hotter.

Disturbia81 · 20/06/2025 08:58

I love it but never go on the really hot days as it’s too busy.

honeylulu · 20/06/2025 08:58

I love the beach and will always visit the beach as well as pool on holiday.

I grew up in a seaside town and walked on the breach pretty much daily and swam in the sea most warm days in the summer. We did have a beach hut though (tiny one but big enough for changing and a bit of shade, storing stuff including comfy chairs, making a cup of tea on a camping stove). And we only lived 5 mins away so quick and easy to dash home for a shower.

I felt a bit baffled by the day trippers without those facilities and the thought of having to sit in a hot car all soggy and sandy afterwards seemed really unappealing. I no longer live by the sea and have never done a UK day trip to the seaside for those reasons. Will happily visit the beach when staying at mum and dad's in my old home town though.

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 20/06/2025 08:59

Not a beach person. Hate the sand, hate the water, have never felt safe sea swimming, bleurgh. Participated when DD was young but not anymore. I'm not a sunbather, not fussed about getting a tan. I prefer to go a see things like places of historical merit or cultural things.

DappledThings · 20/06/2025 09:01

There are many different ways of going to the beach. I've just got back from walking the dog there before it got too hot today. Absolutely beautiful. Warm but not too hot, it's a stone beach so no sand to get everywhere. Busy enough the mobile coffee cart was open but not too busy so it still felt really peaceful.

A completely gorgeous way to start the day.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 20/06/2025 09:02

I’m at the beach most days but we only live 5 minutes away and in a very quiet part of the country so it’s practically deserted, even in summer.

Normansglasseye · 20/06/2025 09:04

I live by the sea, spent most of my childhood and teen years on the beach in the summer and have wonderful memories but I can't stand it as an adult for all the things you mentioned.

I do adore walking along the beach, with the dog on a blustery winters day though.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 20/06/2025 09:04

I do love the beach but not when it’s busy. We’ve got a big sandy beach nearby but our closest is a pebbly beach.

I used to take our dc down to the sandy beach straight after breakfast and leave when the first bus load of midlanders arrived! The sand would be perfect - newly raked and it’s dog free in the summer. If the tide was mid way in that was absolutely perfect! We would often go back again early in the evening as the busses tend to leave by 5pm.
