Does everyone love going to the beach?

TV this morning saying we all love the beach, we all can’t wait to head down to the beach, we’re all looking forward to sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun.

I can’t think of anything worse on a hot day. I hate it. Hate the sand, hate the sea, hate the journey to get there, stuck in traffic in a car then finding somewhere to park etc. Hate being surrounded be people with their music blaring, hate standing in a long queue at a beachside restaurant to get food. Hate walking for miles to the toilet.

I know I sound like a misery but I cant be the only one….

I enjoy a quiet beach for a walk.

DuesToTheDirt · 20/06/2025 21:13

I like a walk along a beach, or maybe a swim at a quiet beach if it's warm/hot, and that's it. I don't want to spend hours sitting on a beach.

  • if I want to read, it's uncomfortable lying down with a book
  • I need suntan lotion, which is a pain, especially if I miss a bit
  • it gets boring
  • if it's hot, then it's too hot on a beach, with a risk of burning even with suntan lotion
  • if it's not hot, then it's too cold to lie around on a beach
  • the sand sticks to you
  • if it's not sandy, it's pebbly, and that's not great either!
  • I don't like beaches packed with people
So many things not to like!

Learnt to swim in a big pool under the cliffs at our local beach. I absolutely love looking in rock pools but the sand/heat/glaring sun/salt water, no thanks, can’t stand it. Maybe I just had my fill as a child. I’d far rather have a day at a National trust property or round a lake messing round in the freezing water.

WarriorN · 20/06/2025 21:22

Love the beach. Can adapt to any weather or type. Though wind is least fave.

I know ppl who really hate it though

lucky enough to live near many beaches so have learnt to manage expectations and reality. It’s always 5 degrees cooler than inland!

PomegranateVase · 20/06/2025 21:28

I only like the beach late at night when it’s much cooler and we have a barbecue or sit there with fish and chips and wine. Apart from this I genuinely cannot see the appeal of going to the beach in the heat.

MsNevermore · 20/06/2025 21:30

I adore it.
I hate swimming in pools because my skin hates the chlorine….but I’ll dive headfirst into the sea and swim around like a dolphin 😍😍😍 I love the sounds, the smells, I feel very at peace when I’m in the ocean.

Vater · 20/06/2025 22:04

I love a walk along a beach (not in high season) as long as it’s from where i’m staying/living to a lovely watering hole. But spending a day there? No chance.

DryDay · 20/06/2025 22:21

I LOVE the beach.

Soft sand, nice breeze, the sound of waves.. Swimming in the sea is the most free-ing feeling. So natural. An ancient pleasure. I’m in total heaven. A nice a beach is my number one holiday criteria

I really don’t like being around the pool on holiday. It’s stinking hot and I feel the pool is full of wee and germs.

I feel like there are beach people and there are pool people.

lessglittermoremud · 21/06/2025 06:15

It’s my idea of hell in the summer, however in October-April that’s where I try and spend the most time! Coats on, kids and dogs having a great time looking for sea glass and other ‘treasures’ on vast empty beaches and flasks of hot chocolate.

BCBird · 21/06/2025 06:24

I hate it in summer. I don't sunbathe. In cooler weather I quite like a walk along the beach.

Notforbeef · 21/06/2025 09:53

Bloody hate it. Wouldn't bother if it wasn't for small kids!

NorthernTwang · 21/06/2025 09:58

Your post made laugh, OP.

My dad has always disliked the beach.
Whenever we went on holiday when we were younger, we’d naturally head to the nearest one. My dad would always volunteer to go get food/water supplies or whatever else it was - basically, anything to avoid spending too much time sat on the beach😂

We would hear him grumbling afterwards
“blooming sand everywhere” and “there’s sand in my sandwich”
Most of the time though, he would just doze in his deck chair, so it can’t have been all that bad.

I love the beach, I find the sea calming and just gorgeous (I live very near several lovely beaches) but I don’t like them when they are crowded (usually the ones abroad) it’s just not fun for me. Too noisy, too claustrophobic. No thanks!

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 21/06/2025 14:18

Sounds like you’re going to the wrong beaches. You can go to lovely quiet ones in Norfolk also on the other side, Weston-super-mare.

Hoppinggreen · 21/06/2025 14:22

I really like UK beaches on cold days but we generally prefer lakes when we go abroad . IF we book a sunny holiday near a beach we also make sure we have a pool available.
DS in particular hates sand and none of us like lying there all day doing nothing, although I am happy if I have a book

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 21/06/2025 14:45

I hate it, and go on sufferance because my son loves it.

BebbanburgIsMine · 21/06/2025 14:50

I can see the sea from my house, long beach here, but I’m not one for sitting on it, I like a nice walk along the beach, but my preference is for when it’s wild and stormy, the sea throws up amazing waves by the lighthouse

Greypanda86 · 21/06/2025 15:19

Christ! Sounds like you’ve been to the beach plenty of times for someone who hates it

Greypanda86 · 21/06/2025 15:22

The fact you're stuck in traffic, surrounded by people, can’t find anywhere to park and queing for the restaurant tells you that yes everyone does appear to love the beach, by the sounds of your visits every fucker was there

Dominicus · 21/06/2025 15:52

I love it but not in baking sunshine. I prefer a cloudy day. It’s much quieter and more relaxing.

Chipsahoy · 21/06/2025 15:54

I love the beach. But never on a hot day because no shade to escape too and far too many people. Especially people with dogs who are all wet and sandy and run up and climb all over you and your mat.

tsmainsqueeze · 21/06/2025 15:57

I love it ,one of my most favourite things ,but the places i go to are not rammed with people and loud music etc which would be a nightmare for me.
I need a chair a book my sunglasses and a drink and not to far from a toilet , leave me there all day !

MyIdealworld · 21/06/2025 16:02

Not UK beaches. Too much sewage now they are absolutely ruined. I don’t buy into the ‘blue flag’ stuff either there aren’t barriers in the sea to keep sewage away from them ! Every time we went for the last 2 years at least one dc has got sick. Not worth it.

A beach somewhere clean with clear water yes I love it

I hate the beach in summer!!! All other seasons great, love it.
In summer it’s busy and sandy, and the sand get everywhere and it’s too hot and there’s never shade, but in the UK the sea is usually too cold to swim in unless you’re brave. I don’t like swimming in the sea anyway because I’m not a great swimmer so it freaks me out. Also hate that there’s either no toilets or if there are they’re filthy and sandy.

mondaytosunday · 21/06/2025 17:24

Nope! Sticky, hot, no shade, sand gets into everything, boring, can’t read, no toilets, constant vigilance on the kids, feeling very self conscious…. I mean I did it for years as the kids loved it but no I don’t.
Exception: We go to Spain and there’s a great restaurant on the beach with loungers and I’m happy to lay on one of those watching the kids swim now (as they are old enough for me to not worry they will drown) getting the occasional drink from the bar and access to toilets.
