Does everyone love going to the beach?

TV this morning saying we all love the beach, we all can’t wait to head down to the beach, we’re all looking forward to sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun.

I can’t think of anything worse on a hot day. I hate it. Hate the sand, hate the sea, hate the journey to get there, stuck in traffic in a car then finding somewhere to park etc. Hate being surrounded be people with their music blaring, hate standing in a long queue at a beachside restaurant to get food. Hate walking for miles to the toilet.

I know I sound like a misery but I cant be the only one….

Agree, hate it on a hot day. Covered in sun cream and the sand sticking to you, sand in everything! Crowds of people sweating. No thanks.
I love a walk along an empty beach on a cool day though

HannaHat · 20/06/2025 09:43

I like walking down the beach, absolutely not sitting or lying on the sand though. Hate the feel of the sand on my skin and in my hair, plus I find just sitting in the sun boring and stifling.

slavetothekittens · 20/06/2025 09:43

Love the seaside and the dream is to retire there.

Can sit for hours watching the sea and the seagulls. Bit of beachcombing, bag of seaside chips to nibble, have a cold drink then back to watching the sea. I find the sea air invigorating.

Allergycream · 20/06/2025 09:51

I go for the Arcades.

Springersrock · 20/06/2025 09:53

I love the beach

I live about a 5 minute walk from a non-touristy/not popular beach and spend half my life there in the summer, and quite a lot in the winter.

Theres a toilet block, but only a tiny carpark and no other amenities so it only tends to be locals who go there for dog walking/surfing/paddle boarding/bbqs/etc so it’s not terribly busy.

I tend to go down early in the mornings with the doggo and then again in the evenings. Sometimes take the paddle boards down with us, take a camping stove down and cook burgers, meet friends for a drink. I love going down about 6am with the dog and it’s deserted - lush!

I also love a good stomp on the beach in winter in foul weather with a flask of hot chocolate, blows the cobwebs away

strugglinguphill · 20/06/2025 09:54

Nope, I can’t stand the sand! It gets everywhere. But I go for my little ones sake

WilfredsPies · 20/06/2025 09:55

I’m not surprised some of you hate the beach if you’re going to the busiest beaches in the middle of the day.

Ilovelowry · 20/06/2025 09:56

I adore the beach. But none of my family do.
They sometimes let me have three hours and then everyone asks to go home.
I love feeling windswept and slightly burned and exhausted from walking across the bay and body boarding and then going home, hot shower, gin and tonic and crisps.

Hate winter beaches. Or storms. Or pictures of stormy seas. Makes me feel like I'm drowning.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/06/2025 09:57

Very much depends where. Love sitting in the shade of the big Cypress trees just below the station at St. Ives, enjoying the glorious view and people watching.

Exposed, little shade, pebbles and the smell of burgers at Brighton, not so much.

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 20/06/2025 10:16

Just get straight in the sea to cool off and wee in the sea like everybody else.

Mum2Fergus · 20/06/2025 10:18

Christ no, can’t think of anything worse than lying on a beach!

Hermitintraining · 20/06/2025 10:20

I like being at the coast, the sound of the waves, dramatic cliff scenery.

I hate sand with every part of my being. I’m also not keen on lying around in the sun, and fortunately my dc also don’t much like it. Add in the inevitable parking and traffic nightmare on a hot day, and I am quite happy to not bother.

WitchHag · 20/06/2025 10:28

Its the people that make it awful (well them and the sand)

My Nan retired near a beach way back when. It’s a pebbly one and was an extremely quiet retirement place. It’s all been gentrified now as not that far from London and it’s a total hell hole.

To visit my Nan, take her shopping to appointments etc I have to go there often weekly - what is technically a 1hr 45min drive often takes over 3 hours due to traffic, parking anywhere is a nightmare, even getting her the local shop. Simply can’t go out on the weekends in summer, so hard to drive anywhere and frankly even need to book the local hungry horse about a month in advance as it’s so busy so you can’t walk in anywhere.

And the lack of consideration from tourists while pushing a 90+ lady down the seaside high street in a wheelchair is breathtaking, really makes you question humanity.

its nice October to April - it’s hell the rest of the year.

As a general rule I find it’s always the people that are the problem (even if it’s just the amount of them) and almost never the place.

MiddleAgedDread · 20/06/2025 10:31

Can't think of a worse way to spend the day! I love a coastal walk or to sit on a promenade or being beside the sea, but I really don't like sand and the sea and definitely wouldn't choose to sit on a beach.

ZenNudist · 20/06/2025 10:31

I like walking along the sea front, not on the sand. I hate sitting on beaches. I don't mind say a Greek beach, in front of a hotel, with a proper sun lounger and shade of a parasol plus near a beach bar. I'd still rather be by the pool.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 20/06/2025 10:31

I adore the sight and sound of big waves crashing on a cobble beach. It puts me in the same mental state as meditation.

By contrast, a crowded sandy beach on a hot day is torture.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 20/06/2025 10:35

Sandy beach on a hot day is my idea of hell.
A quiet Norfolk beach on a cold autumn morning is heaven.

ConcernedOfClapham · 20/06/2025 10:41

Beaches are lovely when you get a random warm day early or late in the year, and they’re quiet and meditative with just a few people around.

on blazing hot days where every fucker runs to the beach and you’re limited to, like, a ten foot square patch to yourself and family? No, not for me at all; I’d rather go for a quiet walk in shady countryside

Talipesmum · 20/06/2025 10:57

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2025 08:37

Is this how you clean the car? By putting talc on your feet? Not really seeing how this gets it out the foot well.

Edited

You sit at the edge of the sand and shake talc over your feet and legs / wherever is sandy. It effectively dries the sticky damp sand off completely, so it just falls off easily and doesn’t stick to your feet. Then it’s easy to brush it off and pop your shoes back on. The sand therefore doesn’t get trodden into the car. I guess if you left your feet completely talc covered that might get in the car, but it’s easy to brush off too.

Talipesmum · 20/06/2025 11:00

I love the beach but never lying around on it. No good at relaxing like that. On a hot day it’s much cooler and nicer right down at the waters edge, and best if you’re actually in the sea. If I’m there on a hot day I’ll go straight in to cool down, stay a while, come out and dry off and eat / cup of tea etc (we usually hire a beach hut if we’re there for a while! ) and go back in when I can.

sparklychair · 20/06/2025 11:16

I don't enjoy spending whole days on the beach, I find lazing about in the sun boring. However I've always lived very near the sea - we tend to go late in the afternoon when the emmets have left - pick the kids up from school and have a quick swim and picnic tea on the beach.
Could do without the twats with disposable bbqs, though - obviously unable to read the numerous signs about them being forbidden and the fire risk.

Lillerea · 20/06/2025 11:16

I rarely went pre-dc but the kids love it and I like taking them to places where they'll enjoy themselves. They like being active, paddling or making sandcastles. I don't get the attraction of jusr kying on the beach as an adult.

Orangeandpurpletulips · 20/06/2025 11:17

I adore the beach and being near the sea, so on holiday I generally prioritise being within walking distance. But I live inland, and travelling to the beach in a heatwave is my idea of hell.

Springflowersyay · 20/06/2025 11:20

We only go to naturist beaches.

Almost no kids, they are much quieter, people are respectful - no music blaring or making noise.
Generally no shops/arcades etc. just peace, the sea and very relaxing 🙂

DirtyBird · 20/06/2025 11:21

I hate it too. I hate sand and the heat. Plus I always get bored and nauseous (cause of the heat). I prefer the pool or a lake with trees, tends to be cooler. Overall I would choose the mountains over the beach any day.
