Does everyone love going to the beach?

TV this morning saying we all love the beach, we all can’t wait to head down to the beach, we’re all looking forward to sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun.

I can’t think of anything worse on a hot day. I hate it. Hate the sand, hate the sea, hate the journey to get there, stuck in traffic in a car then finding somewhere to park etc. Hate being surrounded be people with their music blaring, hate standing in a long queue at a beachside restaurant to get food. Hate walking for miles to the toilet.

I know I sound like a misery but I cant be the only one….

I have mixed feelings. We live in walking distance so I can load up the beach cart with seats, kids wet suits, bucket and spades, snacks and off we go for a couple if hours. Ideally on a warm but cloudy day or after dinner out of the glaring sun. I’m not a fan of the sandy house.

DilemmaDelilah · 20/06/2025 13:25

I love going to the beach. I hate sitting on the beach. I like going in the evening or out of season, looking at the sea, finding interesting stones or shells, going for a gentle wander along the edge of the water.

I cannot bear sunbathing!

DustyMaiden · 20/06/2025 13:28

Secluded spot in Cornwall. Nice sea breeze. It’s much cooler there. Late night or early morning.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 20/06/2025 13:49

I'm utterly indifferent to a beach, if others want to go I might go but its the last thing I want to do on a sunny day. I don't get the enthusiasm for that at all. A beach walk in Spring or Autumn sun is enjoyable.

Surely OP you must know there is nothing in this life that 'everybody' likes.

TianasBayou · 20/06/2025 13:57

Love the beach, anytime, anywhere EXCEPT on a hot summers day UK when all the lemmings flock to the most obvious spots and it’s unbearably crowded. We live on an island with thousands of miles of beach and seemingly the masses have no imagination to go anywhere beyond 100 yards either side of a resort pier.

CiaoMeow · 20/06/2025 13:57

The beach in summer is spoiled for me by crowds. I just don't want it. All that noise and chaos. No thanks. The more deserted a beach is, the more I love it, even if it is cold, raining or snowing.

Zippedydodah · 20/06/2025 13:58

Only out of season when it’s almost empty.
Why on earth anyone wants to be jammed in on a sandy beach with hundreds of sweaty bodies completely beats me.
I prefer to head to the hills and solitude.

Yes I do know that. My OP was commenting on the way the media portrays it as if everyone can’t wait to get to the beach the minute the sun comes out.

I love it but we go to the lesser known ones and avoid ones with many occupants. We also bring our own food (have to allergy family!). I’m disabled and accordingly fatter than I would like but still just bung on shorts and a t shirt and go in swim-able depth and one of the kids fires my crutches back in to DH who doesn’t swim. Zero fucks given Dds and I are in every chance we get

Echobelly · 20/06/2025 14:38

I'm not a fan of the beach - too hot and too much sand. I can tolerate it if I have shade and a lounger, and it can be nice to sit next to it in a cafe of bar but it's a nightmare for me if I get to a beach and find you have to just put a towel directly on the sand and no parasols are available. I burn/get throbbing headaches really easily in the sun and have a bad hip so I can't sit on the ground comfortably, so obviously that scenario really sucks for me

The nicest beach experience I ever had was Golden Horn beach in Croatia a few years ago - all the seating (and we hired a family-sized 'bed') was under a tree canopy and shady, you could go and take a dip in the sea, but you didn't have to get covered in sand, and there were loos, showers and food places around.

Ooh @heartsinvisiblefury just registered your username. Amazing book, I just finished it for the first time about a month ago. One of my all time favourites. Sorry for the derail!

BexAubs20 · 20/06/2025 14:46

Totally agree with you lol I don’t even like it on holiday. If abroad I’ll go once for the kids but that’s it. We live near lots of seaside towns, I would never go on a hot sunny weekend because it’s RAMMED rather be in my garden! Pool and sand box out. Lollies & ice cream (and wine) in fridge. No driving. Bliss!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 20/06/2025 14:47

I do, but I live 5 mins drive from a large, pebbly beach which is never crowded. I love swimming in the sea, it's invigorating!

Kevinisnotacatname · 20/06/2025 14:54

I live a mile from a glorious long beach, love long walks, especially in winter but don't go in the summer except perhaps for a quick evening swim late summer when the sea is warm.

I much prefer the river in summer - a picnic under a shady tree and swimming in cool clear water (with no bastard jellyfish etc) is infinitely preferable. I'm lucky enough to only live a few miles from some excellent river swimming spots.

You most definitely are not the only one. I hate the beach with a passion (UK or anywhere!)

Sand is the dust from Satan’s arse crack. The whole beach sitch is a big fat hairy NO from me lol

TheCurious0range · 20/06/2025 15:02

I love the beach but early mornings, evenings, out of peak summer season and not to lay in the sun, I like swimming, paddle boarding, DS loves metal detecting and crabbing. I live within walking distance though, I don't get the hoardes of tourists who queue in traffic for hours to sit and burn!

BlueVixen · 20/06/2025 15:07

I’m with you!! It was a necessary evil, to be endured when my children were young. My acting is to be applauded as they confess, they never realised (and their acting skills are not as refined as mine).

On holiday, I was always the one voting for the water park! The one in Pissouri, Cyprus was lovely and clean, children loved the chutes and everyone loved the lazy river.

JFDIYOLO · 20/06/2025 15:09

I like a beach in autumn and winter, with dramatic skies and seas, rocks, sea glass, stones, fossils and shells, hardly anybody about and a good pair of boots

daddysgirlnot · 20/06/2025 15:13

No, I hate the sand. Would rather stay on a hotel with a nice pool.

The only good beach is an empty one.

Hayfield123 · 20/06/2025 16:15

I live right by the sea but I hate the summer months. It’s always crowded, fucking dogs everywhere and don’t get me started on people on bikes along the promenade. However the winter months are lovely when all the holiday makers have fucked off home.

josa · 20/06/2025 16:20

I’m totally with you for all the reasons you describe. Now give me a private beach attached to a 5 * hotel with waiters bringing me drinks….. I can do that!

Aposterhasnoname · 20/06/2025 16:23

Loath and detest the beach. Hate the sand sticking to everything, the crowds, the sea drying my skin. The only time it’s in anyway acceptable is when there’s a nice beach bar to sit at with a cocktail.

RaininSummer · 20/06/2025 16:43

Nope. I would rather head to a lake, river, forest area if I don't just sit in my yard and watch the flowers grow. Can't stand baking on a noisy, shadeless, packed beach where my dog can't come too

Mimilamore · 20/06/2025 20:59

Lucky enough to have a quiet beach 3 mins from home so can go for an impromptu swim when tide is high… love it in winter too for walks but the thought of struggling to find parking and paying a fortune, let alone a busy drive to one fills me with horror. Also mine is pebbles with bands of sand, much better IMO, blue flag and no seaweed… love it !!!
