I thought Sainsburys had made a mistake when about 7 things cost me 50 quid. But, no it's correct.
I can't stand the cheap stuff and it will form the basis of a meal....but really??

Ortiz is really posh and expensive, always has been. I wish I could afford it but the own branded one in olive oil is nearly as good.

I think to buy the most expensive version of something, say you 'cant stand the cheap stuff' and then complain about the price sounds a bit weird.

mylovedoesitgood · 16/06/2025 16:20

It's a really good quality tuna - you can't expect it to be as cheap as supermarket own brand, or even close to that price point. Are you new to food shopping?

KeineBedeutung · 16/06/2025 16:20

It's a premium brand - perhaps worth the cost to some, but there are cheaper options available! Didn't you check the price beforehand?

we have a can of tuna between 3 of us, on a jacket potato, but also with baked beans, sweetcorn and whatever else.

One small can or do you mean mean a big can?

I knew it would be Ortiz. It’s outstanding quality. It’s not really expensive if you consider it the ‘meat’ of a meal.

One tin does three of us (adults) for dinner in a salad - a jar of butter beans, the tuna, red onion, parsley, cherry tomatoes and a nice sharp dressing, served with fresh bread or flatbreads. Maybe a little gem lettuce on the side. It’s very filling because of the beans and it’s a nice quick summer dinner.

I must try it.

Wolmando · 16/06/2025 16:22

OP must have known the price if it's a regular buy.

cheaper in Waitrose..........

Doitrightnow · 16/06/2025 16:23

I buy Rio Mare in glass jars and it's similarly priced, but I stock up when it's on offer. It's noticeably more delicious than cheaper ones (although I use the cheaper ones to make tuna fritters and only use the expensive stuff when it's the star).

What sort of dressing would you have? Sounds lovely.

I have no view on Ortiz tuna. Never had it.

But I have to say that posters who buy tuna in water are woefully misguided. Tuna in oil, or no tuna.

Watery tuna is an abomination.

I always used to buy it in water as that's all I knew. Then I accidentally bought some in oil and I will never go back. It's soooooo much better!

RatOfTheHighway · 16/06/2025 16:26

Rio mare is really nice quality too (and often on offer somewhere!) but yeah I’m a tuna snob- will only eat nicer brands otherwise i physically can’t bring myself to eat it.
so it’s a special treat for me when I have it as I can’t afford to buy it regularly! lol

Oh come on 😂One tin of tuna, some butter beans, a red onion and some cherry tomatoes is NOT a "whopping bowl of food" between 3 people. And parsley is a herb, not a salad ingredient.

Of course it is, it's over 1.5 kilo of food between 3.

TheAutumnCrow · 16/06/2025 16:14

Please. It’s ‘mouthfeel’ these days, dude. Very Steinbeck, very Monterey, very Roman.

I can't describe it but it's noticeable. My DH noticed too when I substituted posh tuna instead of our usual. It's not just the fishing methods.

AgnesX · 16/06/2025 16:33

Isn't that the quite posh stuff. A little packet of anchovies are around the same.

Lovely but not to be scoffing in your lunchtime butties ( not in my office anyway!)

EleanorReally · 16/06/2025 16:36

Crinkle77 · 16/06/2025 16:21

132 gm
i know they have shrunk

Icecreamhelps · 16/06/2025 16:37

@Starlight1984 I disagree sounds like something we eat as a family. People don't bat an eyelid spending £6 on a big mac for one person.

MoistVonL · 16/06/2025 16:39

It’s also line caught, so environmentally conscious.

That doesn’t stop me having the cheap stuff on a tuna bagel, though.

@Starlight1984 - parsley is a salad ingredient in the quantities I use! We eat a lot of Middle Eastern style salads. I buy it at the Asian supermarket because their bunches are the size of a bouquet.

@knowifIcando I usually do a vinaigrette with olive oil, white wine vinegar (or lemon juice) and some Dijon mustard for a bit of bite.

"Oh no, my endangered species is too expensive"

Maybe the panda burgers are cheaper?!

Hysterectomynext · 16/06/2025 16:41

Seriously good advertising here well done 👏🏾

At that price just buy bloody fresh tuna!

Different product for different meals. Although I really love tuna steaks too.

SpidersAreShitheads · 16/06/2025 16:43

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/06/2025 14:54

I actually prefer tinned. Not as bad as my dad, who prefers tinned salmon.

I know I'm an embarrassment.

I developed an allergy to tuna quite a few years ago and was really missing tuna mayo.

Then last year I had the genius idea of trying tinned salmon with mayo and it's a brilliant replacement.

At the same time as developing an allergy to tuna, I also developed an allergy to bacon. I'm still in mourning for that.

Peridot1 · 16/06/2025 16:43

The tuna and butter bean salad sounds delicious. Might have to try that one day.

FiendsandFairies · 16/06/2025 16:43

Westfacing · 16/06/2025 16:12

we eat masses of the stuff (Tescos own in spring water) and have it with mayo in sandwiches and in pasta puttanesca etc.

Tuna in pasta puttanesca? 😱

You might get sent to the MN naughty step for that! Grin

Haha! Actually it was Rachel Roddy’s recipe in The Guardian.

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 16/06/2025 16:44

You “can’t stand” the cheaper stuff. Really? 🤔

RatOfTheHighway · 16/06/2025 16:45

@CeaselesslyIntoThePast i don’t really like any seafood and thought I didn’t like tuna too because I was used to the cheap watery fishy stuff 🤷‍♀️
