I thought Sainsburys had made a mistake when about 7 things cost me 50 quid. But, no it's correct.
I can't stand the cheap stuff and it will form the basis of a meal....but really??

I have no view on Ortiz tuna. Never had it.

But I have to say that posters who buy tuna in water are woefully misguided. Tuna in oil, or no tuna.

Watery tuna is an abomination.

Oh come on 😂One tin of tuna, some butter beans, a red onion and some cherry tomatoes is NOT a "whopping bowl of food" between 3 people. And parsley is a herb, not a salad ingredient.

Ha ha yes a tin of tuna has become the new mumsnet chicken. Two at a push but deffo not 3.

Coffeeishot · 16/06/2025 16:03

I eat a whole tin of tuna on a baked potato !

arcticpandas · 16/06/2025 16:04

My DS 15 loves pasta with a tin of tuna and parmesan. Some fresh carrots and cherry tomatoes on the side and it's done. Easy, cheap and nutritious.

Depends what you're doing with it surely? If I'm making tuna mayo then I def want it in water- oil in mayo is too much and I end up having to get rid of half the oil in the bin, which is always a mess. In water I can just drain in the sink and off I go.

WTF? Is this gold-plated tuna caught by virgins, free swimming with their bare hands or something?

You get rid of the water and add olive oil, how hard can it be? 🤷‍♀️

we have a can of tuna between 3 of us, on a jacket potato, but also with baked beans, sweetcorn and whatever else.

A lot of people living around the Mediterranean would disagree re the parsley! Tabbouleh is a classic.

I did have to laugh at that. Many posters like to state their opinion as fact.

I may actually have to try a tin of this tuna now to have with the butterbean salad recipe previously mentioned because it sounds delicious! Although I may swap out the cherry tomatoes for some steamed and chopped green beans.

Are you part of the tuna marketing team OP? 🤣

Fresh tuna steaks are around £10 now for 2 pieces I had to get my microscope out for.

We get ours from the fishmonger and I think they're £6/£7 each but decent size not like the tiny ones you get in the supermarket now!

Wolmando · 16/06/2025 16:10

You have been robbed, it's cheaper in Waitrose and that is not on offer. £5.65 a tin

PurplebeadedFendi · 16/06/2025 16:11

Another thank you to @MoistVonL . I have all the ingredients, and your salad sounds perfect for a hot summer's evening dinner!

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2025 16:12

MoistVonL · 16/06/2025 14:41

It is seriously good tuna! If you fancy a treat it is well worth it for a meal. The cheap stuff is fine for tuna mayo; Ortiz is only worth buying when you let the tuna be the star.

Funnily enough, smoked mackerel is my other quick summer meal standby.

At that price just buy bloody fresh tuna!

FiendsandFairies · 16/06/2025 15:17

I think that salad sounds lovely, and it’s served with bread.

I’m intrigued by this Ortiz tuna now - we eat masses of the stuff (Tescos own in spring water) and have it with mayo in sandwiches and in pasta puttanesca etc.

I’m not sure in those two meals you could say that tuna was ‘the star’ though, but my curiosity is getting the better of me now!

Tuna in pasta puttanesca? 😱

You might get sent to the MN naughty step for that! Grin

PurplebeadedFendi · 16/06/2025 16:13

Yes, yes, yes to using parsley as a core ingredient - it's not just that stuff you sprinkle on at the end!

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2025 16:14

Also there is a reason I avoid shopping at Sainsburys when I can.

yakkity · 16/06/2025 16:14

Starlight1984 · 16/06/2025 14:20

Why would you not check the price before you bought it?

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-tuna-chunks-in-spring-water-4x160g

4 tins for £2.50.

Because it’s a completely different product. It’s like comparing freshly squeezed orange juice with an orange drink made from concentrate

TheAutumnCrow · 16/06/2025 16:14

Strawberryfields18 · 16/06/2025 15:54

Interesting. Can anyone describe the difference between this & cheaper brands regarding taste, texture etc or is the cost more to do with how it's caught etc

Please. It’s ‘mouthfeel’ these days, dude. Very Steinbeck, very Monterey, very Roman.

Wolmando · 16/06/2025 16:15

Just seen the Waitrose ones are smaller, probably for one person, though I doubt the bit bigger tins would stretch to 3

Westfacing · 16/06/2025 16:15

Tuna chunks are terrible - more like minced tuna!

millymae · 16/06/2025 16:16

The same tin would have cost you £7.75 if you’d bought it from Ocado, so in that sense you got a bargain.
We eat a lot of tuna, and for sandwiches I use own brand (or John West) tinned tuna steaks. I’m not a fan of tuna chunks as the tins always seem full of tasteless bits
If we are having tuna in a jacket potato, pasta sauce or as part of a posh’ salad then I always use the Albacore tuna in a jar as it just seems more substantial.
As far as I’m aware Ortiz products are generally considered top of the range and whilst I’ve not bought its tuna, its tinned anchovies are head and shoulders better than any of the other tinned anchovies I’ve tried.

earlgreyandlemon · 16/06/2025 16:16

I assume it was this (the most expensive tuna that Sainsbury's sell): www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/ortiz-bonito-tuna-in-olive-oil-158g

From the packaging, this is clearly a luxury brand. It's sustainable which is great, but there are cheaper options which are also sustainable.

If price is a factor for you then you should look at it before you buy what is clearly going to be an expensive product.

It makes no sense to not look at the price of a luxury product and then come online and complain about it.

Most supermarkets sell a big range of products for different budgets.

Have you seen the size of those jars of butter beans?

Wolmando · 16/06/2025 16:17

Aren't the cheaper tins for cooking with rather than for a salad

Schweden · 16/06/2025 16:18

sweetpickle2 · 16/06/2025 15:58

Its more like someone's cut up a tuna steak and put it in a tin- actually meaty, rather than shredded bits of tuna swimming in water or oil.

Its also individually pole and line caught, so this contributes to cost as well.

Re your second point, all Sainsbury's own brand tuna is individually pole and line caught. I have always found it to be much better than the other mass produced Princes/John West branded ones. Buy tuna steaks in oil/water as preferred, not tuna chunks.
