I thought Sainsburys had made a mistake when about 7 things cost me 50 quid. But, no it's correct.
I can't stand the cheap stuff and it will form the basis of a meal....but really??

Same @beezlebubnicky- that’s exactly the kind of food I like when the weather is warm. My strapping 17 yo would probably be disappointed though if that was his dinner (and would then cook up half a kilo of chicken wings for his main course 😂) DH would eat it and enjoy it but probably not find it filling enough.

StrawberryFields4Now · 16/06/2025 15:32

It's quite nice but after buying it once, (not at Sains) I'd not rush to do it again.

GlamOrc · 16/06/2025 15:32

I've eaten this and various other tinned tuna brands, to be honest I couldn't see what the fuss was about.

I always try the expensive ones out of curiosity but apart from a couple of staples it's not really anything different.

Tasted the same as the other tins from Sainsbury's' though admittedly presented a little nicer.

JoshLymanSwagger · 16/06/2025 15:32

The only tuna I ever buy is in spring water as a rare treat for the cats.
No way would I waste that amount of money for something in a tin.

Womblingmerrily · 16/06/2025 15:35

@LadyFooFooFrankentits Was that at WHsmiths?

TheTwenties · 16/06/2025 15:35

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-albacore-tuna-in-extra-virgin-olive-oil--taste-the-difference-225gSainsbury's Albacore Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Taste the Difference 220g | Sainsbury's.

Pretty sure this would have been a good option and half the price.

PandoraSocks · 16/06/2025 15:04

The Sainsbury's version of the same type of tuna is a lot cheaper.

I was going to say this. Look for “albacore tuna”.

Newmeagain · 16/06/2025 15:39

Yes - but this is a luxury product. To be honest, most people eat tuna without thinking about what it is and where it comes from.

The op is complaining about the cost of their luxury item though, I don't know what they expected it to cost.

Everytime I shop for tuna I get an insatiable urge to buy one of those glass jars of white tuna fillets suspended in olive oil and just eat them out of the jar with my fingers, over the sink. Then I see the price and it stops me buying, but not salivating for the rest of my shop. 🫣

Enjoy your tuna op. Lesson learnt, but a delicious one at that!

Yes, that tuna is delicious and I buy it occasionally as a treat to savour. I mainly eat a vegetarian diet but sometimes eat some fish or chicken.

I know I am a hypocrite as in another decade or two there will be no tuna left except perhaps farmed tuna.

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 16/06/2025 15:44

LadyFooFooFrankentits · 16/06/2025 14:42

That's nothing, I just paid £2.29 for a fucking Yorkie bar at Newcastle station.

Was it preserved in Extra virgin olive oil? 😂

ClosetBasketCase · 16/06/2025 15:45

christ! for that price I would have throught it was from harrods!!!!

I actually prefer tinned. Not as bad as my dad, who prefers tinned salmon.

I know I'm an embarrassment.

My sister loves tinned sprouts.
We should make the two of them share a shack in the wilderness where they can no longer affect decent people.

EleanorReally · 16/06/2025 15:47

we have been saying dont eat the tuna for 30 years but this message seems to have been translated to dont eat net caught

Oh come on 😂One tin of tuna, some butter beans, a red onion and some cherry tomatoes is NOT a "whopping bowl of food" between 3 people. And parsley is a herb, not a salad ingredient.

Agree. I love a salad but that is not a whopping one 😅

Ophy83 · 16/06/2025 15:51

If you want good tuna that's a bit cheaper, go for the supermarket's own brand jar of albacore tuna -

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-albacore-tuna-in-extra-virgin-olive-oil--taste-the-difference-225g

M&S and Waitrose also do it

HidingBehindIt · 16/06/2025 15:51

Dp is also a tuna snob, I might have to get him some of this now. Interesting to know there are other tuna snobs out there 😂

Strawberryfields18 · 16/06/2025 15:54

Interesting. Can anyone describe the difference between this & cheaper brands regarding taste, texture etc or is the cost more to do with how it's caught etc

A lot of people living around the Mediterranean would disagree re the parsley! Tabbouleh is a classic.

I don't like fresh salmon I eat tinned I make it for sandwiches though.

TheCurious0range · 16/06/2025 14:49

You could almost get two fresh tuna steaks for that

Fresh tuna steaks are around £10 now for 2 pieces I had to get my microscope out for.

Its more like someone's cut up a tuna steak and put it in a tin- actually meaty, rather than shredded bits of tuna swimming in water or oil.

Its also individually pole and line caught, so this contributes to cost as well.

Northernladdette · 16/06/2025 15:59

I trust it doesn’t smell and taste of cat food? 😉

Bubblybits · 16/06/2025 15:59

OP: I can’t stand the cheap stuff
also OP: the expensive stuff is really expensive

I mean?? Yeah, you chose the expensive stuff and it costs more. The price labels aren’t hidden.
