I've mentioned this on another thread,, but in McDonalds in the late 80s, I heard the immortal line (to two small children) :

"Kylie ! Jason ! Stop messing around."

Jujujudo · 14/06/2025 15:54

There aren’t many girls called Joanna/Joanne that I know of and I’m a teacher so exposed to a lot of names! A lot of the 70’s names seem to be dying out

Calliopespa · 14/06/2025 15:54

Haven’t come across a Cedric for a long time.

Or Cyril.

I would have put money on Nancy not coming back but there are a few.

I thought Jerry had gone as a name but one rocked up at school this year.

A 5 year old child called Colin turned up at our school recently and i couldn't get over it.

Cadenza12 · 14/06/2025 15:56

Names tend to come and go. The idea that anyone would give their child a Victorian name was unlikely 50 years ago yet here we are today. In 30 or 50 years the names that are super cool today will instantly date someone. The way if the world.

Aah Nige!

My first love…but not my last.😎

Blowitout · 14/06/2025 15:56

I know a baby Gary!

NotAnotherPylon · 14/06/2025 15:56

I always read these threads with interest to see if my name is there. And yup, it is! Seems to be a detested name and pretty much always makes an appearance. I don’t particularly like it myself. It’s not Karen. I hate what has happened to the name Karen.

Mark is still very much in use here in NI. Also Michael. And the occasional Paul. My youngest (13) is called John, but goes by Jack, which was always the traditional (old fashioned!) nickname for John. We did have some regret about calling him John, as Jack is accepted as a ‘proper’ name and we never intended to use John. But he has said recently that he likes the name John and also likes having the choice. There’s something more John-like about him, if that makes sense😅

I know a three year old 🐈 called Cedric

HazelBite · 14/06/2025 15:58

I've yet to come across a Gladys or Gloria who wasn't aged

Fanny

Bath Love GIF by #FestivalVarilux

FANNY is still a popular name in France and French speaking countries and I do love it when it is pronounced in French.

Big fan of Goddess FANNY ARDANT.

I know 2 English Audreys, both school age.

In that case it's come back in England, as Ruby - a name of my grandparents' era did.

I'm in my mid sixties and thinking of people I met personally or professionally in the 20 years or so from 1980.

Reality is that any of the names mentioned are likely to be recycled in the next 30 or 50 years. As others have said, many of the current baby names were popular 100 years ago and then went completely out of fashion until recently.

I've heard of babies called Maud.

Poor little mites!

Jim isn't a name really, it's a nn for James (which will never go out of fashion). James and Jim are family names for me. I have also known a couple of babies going by Jim.

My grandmother's generation:

Alice
Isabel
Evelyn
Helena
Florence
Mary Ann
Eleanor
Phoebe
Louisa
Naomi
Rose
Grace

All about 1880 to 1910 - I thought them very old fashioned when I was a little girl in the 1960s.

Agree Karen is over. Eileen will never again be resurrected & the same with Noleen. I think Bonnie will not be back again for a while.

I teach a Bonnie - primary school

True! Yet every one of them either very popular now, or certainly in common usage, apart from Mary Ann.

tammienorrie · 14/06/2025 16:06

The currently unfashionable names associated with people in their 50s - 70s like Donna, Karen, Keith, Darren, Janet, Carol - will all come back again. 20 years ago people would have been scoffing at babies ever being called Ruby, Winston or Agnes.

EveryDayisFriday · 14/06/2025 16:08

Gary, Neil, Alan, Paul.
Tracy, Michelle, Doris, Angela, Geraldine.

cariadlet · 14/06/2025 16:09

Trickytrixter · 14/06/2025 15:45

Also Victoria - I haven't met a young Victoria in years.

I think Victoria will come back round again.

When I was a child/teen, I didn't know anybody called Victoria. When I started teaching, I had 3 Victorias in my first class - I think baby Vicky in East Enders might have started a mini revival.

No horrible associations so it will be revived in another generation or 2.

Caspianberg · 14/06/2025 16:09

These are all pretty much my baby names list I had! Ds name is mentioned also.

Ones I loved but didn’t use: Percy, Lionel, Colin, Cedric, Alma, Winnie

Ds goes to nursery with a Paul, Andreas, Veronica, Johanna, Jon, Fabian, Nora - all I’m sure are perceived as ‘old’.
