Names rarely die out. They always come back. When I was at school there was no one called Thomas, William, Harry or Oliver unless they were 80 or 90.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 14/06/2025 15:41

No.

Would I bee right in thinking you’ve got twin boys, Jayden and Kayden?

Edited

So you are saying names are handed down from on high then ?

OK ....

My favourite was a dog called John.

😁 Love it.

Trickytrixter · 14/06/2025 15:45

Karen - although maybe it'll resurge in a few years.

When I was young it would have been unthinkable to call a child Fanny but I've met a couple now and nobody batted an eyelid.

Trickytrixter · 14/06/2025 15:45

Also Victoria - I haven't met a young Victoria in years.

There are regional variations here. In England a woman called Audrey is going to be elderly.

In Scotland much less so.

I know 2 English Audreys, both school age.

IggyAce · 14/06/2025 15:47

I know of a Colin and Alan who are teens now.

I expect the following to die out:
Janet
Eileen
Brenda
Gary
Keith

SupposesRoses · 14/06/2025 15:47

I don’t think you can talk about a name dying out. It’s not like you need a breeding pair of lesser-spotted Garys to have a baby Gary.
The sounds of many dated names are objectively nice and once the associations are gone they will be used.

FacingTheWall · 14/06/2025 15:47

About three years ago I came across two little ones called Gary in the same class!! I did consider if they had the same dad for whom they were named, because it was such an unusual name for even one child.

There’s a Gary in my sons class

Cyclingmummy1 · 14/06/2025 15:48

I thought Jerry had gone as a name but one rocked up at school this year.

Both of my teenagers in England have had classmates called Audrey.

VividViolet · 14/06/2025 15:49

I know a cool teenager whose middle name is Nigel. His grandfather, Nigel, is the loveliest man so it's not hard to see why one of his grandsons has his name as a middle name.

Reginald but Reggie will persist.

Audrey had a resurgence 10-20 years ago, I think. I met one who will now be in her early 30s when she was nursery age and was astounded. First one I'd ever met who was under my mother's age, i.e. born in the 1930s or earlier. Aubrey has also been appropriated as a girls' name, presumably because it sounds similar to Audrey, even though it's almost always been a boys' name until recently.

I think Mark has never fully gone away, and will definitely have a revival, along with Paul, Stephen and Jonathon, which in my mind are similar vintage.

i don’t expect Percy or Barry to come back.

Percy is back in posh circles.

I've always thought Nigel is a great name, but I know I'm in a tiny minority on that here.

Cliff/Clifford
Barry
Bernard
Dennis
Kenneth
Edgar
Maurice/Morris
Leslie
Perry

I know “old” names sometimes make a surprising comeback, but I suspect most of the above are gone for good. All, strangely enough, are or were names of members of my family.

My nine year old DS is called Kenneth! Family name for DH, he really wanted it. I've grown fond of it over the years.

Calliopespa · 14/06/2025 15:53

Adolf and Donald.

Frank
Mavis
Carol
Joyce

A friend has just had a new grandchild called Joyce.

QuartzIlikeit · 14/06/2025 15:53

DC currently has a Percy in their class (year 2). There was a Mark in DC2 class (so would now be late teens).

Haven't heard a child called Gary or Nigel for a long time though.
