I met a three year old Keith recently. I teach a couple of kids called Mark (one is Marc), both 13/14. Have recently taught a Lee, a Kevin and a Bruce. All teens.

I also love the name Gordon - I imagine a cheeky boy with a Scottish accent!

I doubt Gaylord will become popular again

Edited

Gaylord probably wins.

I don’t know any Eustaces

We had a Nigel, who was a year older than me, living next door when I was a child. He had a high, piping voice and a permanently runny nose. Strangely, I was never tempted to choose the name for either of my boys...

Norman, Norma

Exactly my thoughts, along with Bernard, Eric, Eunice and Winifred.

Agree Gary. Keith. Martin. Kevin. Karen. Colin. Alan. Julian. All hideous imo!

These are the names of some of the children l was at school with in the seventies. I might not particularly like them all but I can't agree that they are hideous. At least they are all proper names and not the made up varieties that so many children are saddled with, unless they are given truly old-person names l.

I don’t think Julian is hideous at all.

Agree all of these are not great except Winifred which I think is due a revival and could be super cute - Winnie or Freddie.

I know a Nigel. It’s not my favourite name but he’s so lovely I feel I have to post and say Nigel isn’t as bad as some names.😬

I think Shirley is such a pretty name it must make a comeback. I quite like Beryl (a gemstone) and Valerie. Phyllis not so much but I like Phylida.

I also think Susan and Tracey are pretty names. I desperately wanted to be called Susan until I was about twelve.

I’m a Susan who always hated my name. I’ve always gone by a nickname anyway as that’s what my parents planned but I now have two other nicknames depending on who it is who knows me. So that’s been interesting. I wasn’t even one of many in my year at school, there were some older and some younger but I was alone in my year. I wanted to be something more exciting sounding like even Susannah which was an ancestor’s name for me. But what I really wanted was to be called Claudia. I always loved that name.

Stoptheworld101 · 15/06/2025 01:28

My grandad, born in the early 1920s, was called Wilfred and I (born in 1973) used to say to my Mum "how could anyone call their child that?!". Never knew or met anyone called it. Fast forward to the 2000s and it's now a trendy middle class name, so who the flip knows! The same could go for the likes of Gary, Barry, Graham, Wayne, Lee, Bruce, etc....

Stoptheworld101 · 15/06/2025 01:30

My bet for a name that never comes back is Sandra

Olive

I know a 2yr old Olive.

Tanya / Tania

That's a name I've not saw in a long time,I knew a Tanya late 80s.

Martin and Kevin are perfectly nice names, still in use around here, and I like Julian and know of a few young boys with that name.

I imagine that eventually all those other names will be popular too. My mother used to shudder when really old fashioned names came back into fashion, these things go in cycles.

mathanxiety · 15/06/2025 03:41

Neville

I agree. As we've said, many times on this thread, it's all in cycles. If Wilfred, Stanley, Elsie and Mabel have come back, so will names like Ian, David, Neville, Linda, Susan and Margaret.

notprincehamlet · 15/06/2025 07:21

Saw a dog on a rehoming site called Samantha - haven't met a human Samantha in years!
Mediaeval occupation names - baffling why you'd call a child Fletcher or Cooper unless you're actually from a long line of arrow or barrel makers
I love the names Martin and Ian. Kevin is big in France.

borderlaise · 15/06/2025 07:46

Thinking about friends names. I don’t know or hear of any children with these names:

Nicky
Samantha
Shelly
Lisa
Kerry
Carole
Laura
Kelly
Debbie
Gemma
Jo
Mel
Leanne
Becky
Rachel
Jenny
Gayle
Natalie
Mandy

and then the men

John
Martin
Daryl
Mark
Jason
Andy
Gary

Actually I do know of an 9yr old Jennifer, and a 15 year old Louise.

Yes, I have come across some lovely Nigels too; one in particular, but my early encounter with the runny nosed little Nigel next door put me off the name for life. It can be very difficult to shake off such revolting memories.

Neville

I’ve never met a Neville in my life (botn 1960s).

Come to think of it Russell isn’t a name you see much of under 60.

All those girls name will come back with the possible exception of Gayle. They are all still nice names just “mum generation.”

Gary just delivered my Ocado order. In the Cherry van. I'm married to a Stuart, not many of if them either.

Really doubt anyone is calling their babies Lindsey, or any of its variety of spellings.

Lyndsey is a pretty name. I think any name that sounds pretty will never completely die out like the Berthas and Gertrude type names.

BunnyLake · 15/06/2025 09:54

My kids left compulsory education several year’s ago (a Tyler, Taylor, Mia, Ella era), I wonder what reception/primary are full of now?

Are there any baby/toddler Alan or Peters about, even that classic Michael is not a name I’ve seen under 50.

All the little boys near me seem to be called Teddy or Albie, the little girls Margot or Aoife if that's anything to go by!
