I know a few young boys called Wilfred.

I haven’t, but interested to hear from this thread. I have noticed Ernest and Arthur making big comebacks locally (South East). I do know a 6 year old Fred (Frederick).

I wasn't sure if I'd get flamed for this, but nearly all are children of immigrants from China. I think it is a search to capture something seen as traditional maybe? A bit like Afro Caribbean young men decades ago called Winston? I'm not sure though, maybe they just liked the names and meaning.

It makes sense, to foreign ears it probably sounds fine just as we wouldn't be aware of old fashioned Chinese names. I just couldn't see a young British couple calling their baby Joyce. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with acknowledging other countries name preferences. Year’s ago when I lived abroad I visited a school for my kids and a number of Filipine children were already at the school and had their work up on walls and some of the names were English but really unusual, like surnames you’d never normally use as first names (think York, Wainwright, that sort of thing). Beautiful young women in South America called Vera, Hilda, Gladys. All countries probably have their own old fashioned names that sound fine to us.

Wayne, and Lee are gone for good, I think.

Pamela, Sheila and Brenda also.

And for 'old lady' names, Gladys will never see the light of day again! the others, definitely, and do!

Ooh Sheila and Brenda are good ones, I only know one Brenda who is my Mum’s age, no Sheilas ever.

I met a three year old Keith recently. I teach a couple of kids called Mark (one is Marc), both 13/14. Have recently taught a Lee, a Kevin and a Bruce. All teens.

I also love the name Gordon - I imagine a cheeky boy with a Scottish accent!

I doubt Gaylord will become popular again

Thing is, you have to be quite old - as I am - to think that Maud is an old lady name. And it's because when we were young, there were old ladies called Maud and Dolly. Just as there were old men called Bert and Ron.

There aren't now. They're all dead. Now people's Nans and Grandads are called Tracey and Mark, Lynn and Andy, Cath and Nick.

To new parents, Maud and Albert are ancient mythical names untainted by outside lavs and endless stories about the Blitz. That's why they come back.

The associations for me were never outside lavs and stories about the blitz. They were wizened, whiskery old great-aunts, and bristly old great-uncles in tweedy jackets smelling of pipe smoke.

I think Shirley is such a pretty name it must make a comeback. I quite like Beryl (a gemstone) and Valerie. Phyllis not so much but I like Phylida.

I also think Susan and Tracey are pretty names. I desperately wanted to be called Susan until I was about twelve.

Sheepsheeps · 14/06/2025 23:08

Karen

Alice Maud was Queen Victoria's second daughter; Albert was the Prince Consort.

Alison.

…which I think is a beautiful name. It will certainly not die out, nor will it ever be ten a penny.

Has Claude been spotted in the wild at all?
Herbert?

Noshadelamp · 14/06/2025 16:15

Most of those names are names for babies and young children now.

That was the point being made!

OliviaBonas · 15/06/2025 00:03

Wilfred is back as are Walter and Percy.

David is a great name but Dave is awful.

Victoria is a beautiful name but Vicky is awful.

Rebecca is a lovely name but Becky is awful.

I don’t like Nigel, Kevin, Gary, Wayne, Alfred, Keith, Colin…

I don’t like Pamela or Susan

Karen is a beautiful name, it’s such a shame.
