Stanley
Sidney

As I said upthread, I teach a Stanley, and a few others in recent years.

Was Scrooge the last Ebenezer?
Gertrude, (A great Aunt)

Not sure about the former point. Alexandra, Victoria, Harriet, Henrietta, Charlotte, Stephanie, Danielle/Daniella, Gabrielle/Gabriela, Georgina, Christine/Christina. Not all of those are currently in the top 20 but they're still used, I think.

I will admit I can't see Edwina coming back any time soon, nor any of the old names often used in Scotland a century ago - Jamesina, Wilhelmina, Alexandrina, all usually abbreviated to Ina. We had an Auntie Teenie in the family, whose name I assume was Christina.

I had an Edwina in my class back in the early 70s and even then I was shocked. It seemed such a drab but twee name to me.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/06/2025 17:59

The site I've been linking to (no idea how reliable it is) says 3 babies born last year called Gertrude. Astoundingly, 14 poor wee souls given the name Ebenezer.

Not many Maurices around these days. 15 recorded births last year.

ToWhitToWhoo · 14/06/2025 17:59

The only ones that I think definitely won't make a comeback, due to their acquired associations, are Fanny and Dick.

Otherwise, who knows? Apart from Gordon-is-a-moron, Dennis the Menace and Beryl the Peril have probably reduced the popularity of the names. But I have met a 6-year-old Dennis, and some of these associations may be forgotten with time,

I think Walter has completely died out. Don't know any that wouldn't be over 100 today.

I know three, one is probably about 24 or so now, and the other two are toddlers, believe it or not! I always felt a bit sorry for the older Walter, he was very ‘uncool’ and small and it was before the grandad names really had their revival so his name just stuck out like a sore thumb!

@DoraSpenlow my gran was always referred to by her nieces and nephews (there were many) as Aunt Flo.

I remember people in school sniggering at the name Florence in the 90s. I know a little girl Florence now and I love it again, no one abbreviates from what I can see.

We had an Edwina in my school! Year below me. She'd be around 63 now. I agree, never a favourite name of mine.

Not Mark, I know several 12 and under!

I think Mark is a classic name, maybe not as much as James but it’s a name that a male of any age can comfortably have.

I teach 2, they both ask to go by "Flo".

Perhaps it’s the same Edwina 😂

TeenToTwenties · 14/06/2025 18:03

Names come and go.
I think of Ivy as an old lady name, but I know it has been popular recently. See also Bertie, Alfie etc.

Olive

I know 2 Olives under 5

A lot of posters just seem to be listing names like Barbara or Kenneth or Sharon or Eileen that have fallen down the charts because they were popular a few generations ago. These names will all be back sooner or later, just as Daisy, Molly, Ruby, Milly, Alfie, Maisie, Harry, Ella etc came back (all these sound like great-grandparents' names to me).

If I had to pick unlikely returners: Enid, Mildred, Cedric, Gertrude, Millicent, Gilbert, Gladys, Edeltraut...but you never know.

Adolf has a long road back.

Edited

I know a 19-year-old Gilbert,

Agree about Adolf!

I've heard of babies called Maud.

'Come into the garden, Maud.' If I met a Maud, I'd have to sing that song. 😄

Red hair? I can't remember her surname. She was in the year below me, I think. The school had houses called after the national saints of the UK, if that helps ...

Bickybics · 14/06/2025 18:06

Wayne. I went to school with 2, 1 used his middle name.
i was in shoe shop with a little boy called Ian recently which surprised me.

I think Audrey seems to be gaining in popularity. I've seen it quite a lot on baby name threads

I love Audrey. I love Audrey Hepburn but I became a fan of the name watching Twin Peaks’ Sherilynn Fenn as an Audrey. It suddenly became a name I would have happily been called. She made it seem powerful and feminine.

David is a great name (not Dave!!). I considered David for my younger son and sometimes wish I had chosen it over the one I did choose.

Ha no then, it wasn’t. 😁 Same age though.
