Light hearted to counter the worst stuff you've bought thread.

Me - two Kirby vacuums for under £200 delivered from eBay rather than £4k - one for each floor as they're bloody heavy. I may think of more as we go along

I had two dishwashers in my previous kitchen. It did not work as expected with dirty dishes ending up with clean, emptying one and then refilling when the other was only half full. Ended up using one for storage of baking trays and one as it was intended.

I dont get the need for two as others say, but there again maybe we arent a typical family

3 adults, a slimline dishwasher on every other day. Dont have piles of dishes waiting to be washed needing to be hid in another

I cook from scratch daily

JungAtHeart · 08/06/2025 21:39

Weirdly a pair of rubber/silicone heat pads … shaped like turtles from Ikea. I use them every day. Built in under stair storage.

ThatRareHazelTiger · 08/06/2025 21:41

Photo please. We want to get one of those

Me too! We had our last water softener for fifteen years, in three houses. Got a new one at the end of last year, at the same time as the Quooker.

@Bluevelvetsofacould you tell me the make/model of your water softener please? I’m baffled trying to work out which one to go for DH wants one that can move with us as you have done.

It’s Harveys. We have a new one now, which is smaller than the previous one. We left the last one when we moved, but we’d moved it twice. It was working when we moved and left it. We’d been in the house for ten years and it was in the previous house for three years and had been bought a couple of years before. As far as I know, the one we left is still working, but obviously less efficient.

We have a water softener sales place a couple of miles away and we ordered the new one from there, together with a Quooker tap.

@Treesandsheepeverywhere

Hopefully this gives an idea of how they look from inside. For us they've been a good buy.

Those look lovely, very helpful to see in situ, thank you.
Will tripple measure to be on the safe side.

Great thread OP.

Great thread OP.

They look a bit weird on the photo, it was just to show you the different permutations, as it were. But they do work well. Sorry about tatty shed thing in the background 😬

Fixed air conditioning in the living room. It’s changed my life!

Our bean to cup coffee machine and a Bibo water machine are also amazing.

As for the dishwasher thing - we hardly ever have pots on the side - it gets emptied first thing and then filled during the day as we go along and then on in the evening. Occasionally there’ll be a couple of things that don’t fit but it’s mostly ok.

Edited

Agree with the air conditioning had it fitted in the bedroom a few years ago no more hot sleepless night it’s bliss. We have a virgin pure water machine similar to the bibo.

menopausalfart · 08/06/2025 23:40

My goose down duvet. Like being wrapped in a fluffy cloud.

Hard agree. So good and far less disgusting than the drainhole of doom!

My shower drain hole is smaller than the one featured, so I don't think it would sit correctly. Do they sell other sizes?

MoominMai · 07/06/2025 11:37

I’ve always fancied one. I’m single and I’m not very strong. Is it something I could install? Also, are they difficult/expensive to maintain. Are they loud enough that you can hear them from an upstairs window if it was open? (I’d love that!). Sorry for all the Qs but if anyone could help - thanks in advance!

Some years ago, I bought DP a water feature for his living room. It was a Red Indian reservation as he likes everything native American. Unfortunately, every time you put it on, it makes you want to run to the loo for a wee!

SingleAHF · 09/06/2025 00:01

Air fryer. Since buying it in March every single meal I have eaten (apart from salad) has been cooked in it, I have not used the oven or the hob in 3 months.

spikefaithbuffyangel · 09/06/2025 00:23

Mini chopper
makes cooking so easy to just whizz up a chopped onion etc in seconds

MayaPinion · 09/06/2025 04:42

Vegetable chopper - about £20 from Amazon. I use it almost every day for dinners and packed lunches and just pop it in the dishwasher after.

Blobbitymacblob · 09/06/2025 06:33

New windows. Our heating bills were nearly halved, and there’s silence now when we close the windows. We back onto a pub and every Friday and Saturday night it was loud. Now we don’t notice and I wouldn’t be able to tell you if there was a match on anymore.

Barney16 · 09/06/2025 07:09

Steamer for clothes. It's an upright like they use in shops. Absolutely brilliant, I never iron anything. Vax steam mop, I know people often don't like them but I wouldn't be without it. I run it over my carpets too because I think it kills any lurking moths. Not sure if it does but it makes me feel better. Air fryer, which I resisted for ages but now I hardly ever use the cooker.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 09/06/2025 08:48

In terms of value per use, a tower airer on wheels from Lidl. I’d never seen one before & bought it for DS who was moving into a new house share, but as soon as I got it home I thought ‘ooh, hang on a minute …’ and ended up keeping it.

It was an absolute bargain and gets used every day - takes a large load of washing really easily, even a king size duvet, and just shuttles in and out for drying in the garden. Locking wheels if it’s a bit windy, hooks for hanging stuff, and folds completely flat against the wall when you’re not using it.

It’s such a simple bit of kit but so well designed.

Elboob · 09/06/2025 09:02

Cavello · 07/06/2025 09:09

Resisted buying an airfryer for 2 years, couldn't be without it now. It's used everyday the best function is it turns off, DH had a propensity to put things in the oven and forget about it. It also cooks perfect pork belly.

@Cavello please tell me more about the pork belly!? Do you have a recipe please?

Drew79 · 09/06/2025 09:07

Not exactly a purchase, but moving into a flat that had a washer drier, now that was a revelation! I wouldn't entertain the idea of a drier when I previously lived in a house, thought it would cost a fortune in electricity etc, but they are a godsend when you don't have access to a washing line, and when things take forever to dry in the winter. It wasn't as expensive as I though too, and easy to track the cost with a smart meter.

Lol, good to know of these ‘unintended consequences’ before I commit to anything! 😁

A little oil dispenser kept next to the hob. Starts every meal with a swoosh and a swirl in the pan and makes me feel like a pro. I love it!😂

Would love to know which oil dispenser you use please. My OH sometimes cooks and uses way too much oil.

Thank you so much for this, not keen on the screw ones and didn't know there was this option. 🙏
10% off too.

I have the Luxaflex pleated version which are much more expensive and you can't make them fully black-out. These look much better.

Thank you, I'm now drawn to the roller ones as realised the shutters ones have to completely come off to clean behind?

Edit: my mistake, they do come up as @CoubousAndTourmalet 's photo shows.
I mindful of making a mistake with so many choices out there.

Quooker
A couple of wall mounted drying racks from IKEA which were really cheap and I love them to bits. Not sure if they still do them but this sort of thing:

We got a heated one of these from Lakeland, it's amazing! Holds almost a full load. They've stopped making them, sadly.
