Light hearted to counter the worst stuff you've bought thread.

Me - two Kirby vacuums for under £200 delivered from eBay rather than £4k - one for each floor as they're bloody heavy. I may think of more as we go along

Was very late to the air fryer party but it’s brilliant and we use it much more than I thought we would.

A huge wardrobe and chest of drawers for the bedroom. Organising my clothes is so much easier now.

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 07/06/2025 09:19

Custom made, built in bookcases. Floor to ceiling, tons of space for books and all little bookcases I used to have sold. Makes the living room look so much tidier.

wizzler · 07/06/2025 09:20

Had proper curtain tracks fitted with none of those irritating ridges that make you yank your curtains twice a day

Kelim · 07/06/2025 09:23

Boiling water tap

Wins the thread - and my envy.

Slow cooker for £16 12 years ago.

Superking bed. Don’t even know if DH is there half the time, ideal 🤣

This made me laugh over my morning coffee. 🤣

SorrowsPrayers · 07/06/2025 09:33

Quooker tap. Bloody love it!
De Longhi coffee machine - if it breaks I would buy another immediately.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 07/06/2025 09:40

Fixed air conditioning in the living room. It’s changed my life!

Our bean to cup coffee machine and a Bibo water machine are also amazing.

As for the dishwasher thing - we hardly ever have pots on the side - it gets emptied first thing and then filled during the day as we go along and then on in the evening. Occasionally there’ll be a couple of things that don’t fit but it’s mostly ok.

Air con is a changer - I don't know how much it costs to run in the UK but we have it abroad and keep it at 24 - all year around so its heating in the winter and cooling in the summer - 4 enormous units for a big house - for around £40/month. Game changer

Dishwasher and airfyer are used daily.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/06/2025 09:48

Another Quooker one. We also have custom made book cases - maximises space and storage.

In our old house we had the space under the stairs ergonically designed and compartmentalised. It was bloody wonderful in a London house! Space for shoes, coats, book bags, rucksacks, etc.

Electric gates - zap to open, zap to close.

I can’t remember the exact amounts off the top of my head but they said it’s about the same as a new (efficienct) tv. We got it last year and there was no noticable change in our bills or usage when we used it.

As we’ve only got it in the living room, we still use the central heating for winter time. However, our boiler broke and had to be replaced in Oct last year and we used it for heating then and it was really handy to have.

Ooni pizza oven. Out best cooking gadget ever - lockdown purchase and still used regularly

Emperor duvet. Bigger than superking and ended duvet wars. Worth every goddamn penny.

Meadowfinch · 07/06/2025 10:03

I'm not really a gadget person. I have a range cooker and a kitchen with plenty of space.

The best buys have been my 2000 spring, wool filled mattress. Bliss, and still perfect after 19 years.

A large thick wool rug from JLP. It pulls my odd shaped sitting room together perfectly.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 07/06/2025 10:08

Getting custom fit slatted blinds for our extension room (it's officially an orangery, which apparently I'm not supposed to call it on MN, because it's pretentious 🙄).
Anyway, the room was unusable on hot sunny days. We had blinds fitted at the start of last year, because we were getting a puppy, and wow - what a difference. Wish we'd done it years ago.

We bought Hive from British Gas for about 10£ month for a year and didn't really know what were getting - it's marvellous - it knows when you leave the house, it knows when youre coming home and prompts you on your phone to switch the heating on etc if its out of your usual pattern - it is truly BRILLIANT - tech that works! We have the smart plugs for the lamps that work with Alexa - so 'living room lights on' etc - also programmed for an emergency - which switches nearly all lights on in the house and plays a siren through all of the Alexa Echo dots in the house and the outside lights - which I obviously hope we'll never use in the case of a burglary etc. We setup similar for my in-laws - 75-80yo - living room light etc so they don't have to bend down and switch on 4 lamps every time they go into the drawing room etc - they are technophobes but love it.

I did not know smart plugs were a thing. This is wonderful news! I have just ordered some for my millions of lamps. Yay!! 🙌🏻

IlovePond · 07/06/2025 10:46

Rice cooker - we use it all the time!

Tempur adjustable bed - separate mattresses on one frame which allow for raising the head/foot as required. It is just brilliant.

crumpet · 07/06/2025 10:53

Quooker
A couple of wall mounted drying racks from IKEA which were really cheap and I love them to bits. Not sure if they still do them but this sort of thing:

A woolroom wool mattress, topper, quilt and pillows; have never slept better.

A Lefant robo vacuum. I hate hoovering!

Water Softener

Water feature in the garden it’s so relaxing to listen to when we have some sun

I’ve always fancied one. I’m single and I’m not very strong. Is it something I could install? Also, are they difficult/expensive to maintain. Are they loud enough that you can hear them from an upstairs window if it was open? (I’d love that!). Sorry for all the Qs but if anyone could help - thanks in advance!

24Dogcuddler · 07/06/2025 11:54

Ended up with 2 air fryers, one Ninja one Tower 2 drawer. Handy as I’m vegetarian and DH not.
Downsizing but going to have to take both ( even though not really got room)
Love my dishwasher which I’ve had for over 20 years. Won’t have on when we move aaaargh but having a new kitchen asap.
Also love my steam cleaners. I have a large one with various attachments for floors tiles etc and a hand held for upholstery curtains etc. I clean a lot but I’m retired so have time now.
Interested in the wool duvet idea!

24Dogcuddler · 07/06/2025 11:55

P.S. not same dishwasher for 20 years! This one 3 years old when we did the kitchen again.

Why has no one invented a super sized dishwasher. Maybe a double cupboard sized one. We have super sized fridges/freezers/washing machines etc.

We definitely need 2

We have a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher which is two, one above the other, made as big pull out drawers which are fitted with cabinet fronts like the rest of the kitchen. It’s in the island next to the sink. We love it! Tend to use the top one for plates & dishes and the bottom one for pans and heavier washes but have occasionally just kept cycling both (eg after Christmas dinner). They work completely independently. Easier to load as well as you’re not constantly bending down.
They’re about 13 years old now and we’ve had a few repairs but they are still great!
