Turning out the big light

I'm interested to know if I'm deluded or if my DP is quite mad. Every single evening at some point, whilst we are sitting in the living room watching TV, he will say mind if I turn the big light out? If he does we are plunged into virtual darkness except for a rather rubbish table lamp. It's like sitting in the dark more or less. He says he likes it because "it's like being in the pictures". It isn't, it's exactly like sitting in the dark. It's obviously a completely mundane problem but I honestly don't think the majority of people sit in the dark watching their TV do they?

We never turn on the big light! Get better lamps.
And yes, we sit in the (almost) dark.

Why not just get some more lamps?

Like being at the pictures 🤣🤣.. That got me thinking I haven't been to the pictures for 32 years.

We currently have an issue that meant bath water came through the ceiling light so have all the downstairs big lights off while it dries out. We’re using a couple of lamps and the kitchen under cupboard lights. I have to admit, we could do with a couple more lamps. But, in the living room we only have the big light on if we’re trying to find something. Nice living room lamp all the way.

My evening starts with "Alexa, lamp on, Alexa light off". Buy a better lamp. 😉

Also, no one would ask if others mind the big light going off… if we’re all in position to watch a film it’s more likely someone will say, “why is the big light still on?!”

Thinking on this more; are there many people who live using the big lights all the time?

Need better lamps 😆 only time the big light is on before I turn the lamps off.

Big light on dark mornings when motivating the dcs

I've never heard it called the big light, do you mean the ceiling one? I don't like ours on but DH does. But equally I hate sitting in anything approaching darkness, we have a big standard uplighter behind the sofa which fills the room with lovely warm light without being in your eye-line like the ceiling one.

The big light in my house doesn't even have a working bulb.

Hate the big light on too, we have a floor lamp and lights on the media unit.

Also Team DH. The big light is far too harsh. We have 2 lamps on instead.

My parents always have the big light on, I hated it as a child ..too bright! As an adult I bought them a lovely lamp for the living room, I’m pretty sure the only time it’s used is when I’m there!

We always have the main light on if it’s remotely dark , I can’t abide sitting in the dark or gloom .

I got the shit beaten out of me as a 15 year old for daring to turn on the big light in the evening by my “D”F. All these years later it’s nice to be able to have mine on now in my own house.

Always big light here. We have lovely wall lights but I can’t bear not being able to see properly (really bad eyes). DP would probably be team lamp though.
