Adulting. Everything is a struggle. I wish I was one of those well groomed, organised, soft spoken Earth mothers that bake, batch cook, and enjoy spending time with their children all day. Instead, I'm scrabbling around trying to remember everything, ignoring the housework even though it pisses me off, I buy dinner from Coop on the way home and spend most of the evenings on my phone hiding from my children. I love them to pieces but this is hard 😔

Yep, felt that one.

I'd like to add cooking rice. Can't do it. Should be so simple, I know, and in general I'm a pretty good cook but I've tried every trick and tip, even bought a rice cooker. It never comes out as properly cooked, fluffy rice. It's always sticky and soggy or overcooked and dry. I don't know what I'm doing.

Front crawl swimming. I’m a dab hand at the breast stroke, but my legs sink when I try front crawling.

MayaPinion · 03/06/2025 14:33

Blessing myself. I used to be a catholic but I’m left handed and got it wrong all the time. I’m sure I’ve summoned more than my fair share of demons.

Skipping. One of our badges in Brownies involved skipping twenty times but I could never master it. I think they took pity in the end and gave me the badge anyway. It was the bit where you do a little jump in between jumping the rope I never got.

prelovedusername · 03/06/2025 14:46

I may be able to help with that @SharpLily

Twice the volume of water to rice, so one mug rice, two mugs cold water. Quick stir then leave alone. Bring to the boil, then lower temperature so it’s not bubbling furiously, tilt the saucepan lid so it’s partially covered and won’t boil over (but you need to keep an eye on it. After five minutes turn the heat off and put the lid properly on. Leave the pan on the hob for any remaining water to continue absorbing until the rice looks dry.

Learning song lyrics. Remembering song names. The brain networks between words/text and music just don't seem to be there. Have never come across anyone else like this.

Allseeingallknowing · 03/06/2025 14:49

Cooking steak-always tough
Sudoku
Driving
Poached eggs are easy:
Break eggs into a bowl
Drop eggs into boiling water
After a couple of minutes lift them out with slotted spoon.Easy!

It is hard if you’re trying to do them all at once!

Long division and using a slide rule. Much to the dismay of my engineer / technical draughtsman father. This was in the days before calculators were invented, and a slide rule was the thing to use.

Making a poached egg, assembling a box and using cling film

I also have a poached egg trick but you’ll have to master the cling film first - line a mug with clingfilm, allow enough material to fall over the edges of the outside of the mug. Crack an egg inside. Bather cling film edges to form a pocket. Lower this pocket into a pot of already boiling water. Leave for around 3 minutes. Peel off the cling film and you should have a poached egg ready for you! 5
