Something others do and make it look easy but you cant get the hang of it.

For me its cross word puzzles never finished one i have tried but it goes in the bin.
Sudoku what a waste of time.
Home made custard cant make it at all even reading the how to make it still fuck it up somehow.
Pancakes dont get me started i just have to buy them.

This is so interesting as sometimes you can feel like the only one who can’t do something but I can identify with so many of these
chess, in fact board games in general, cannot retain the rules or think strategically or even care about outcome…. apart from word games/ Scrabble and general knowledge
Logical puzzles… hurt my brain
Suduko, just can’t invest
Abstract maths ( strangely not bad at mental arithmetic but anything with a formula!)
Yorkshire Pudding and pancakes
Cakes in general but can cook wonderful savoury meals
Raquet sports
Team games
Driving, too much to think of at once
I really feel my synapses waving about trying to make connections on these things but never forget a name, or the childrens’ names or the grandparents’ names!! Can’t retain numbers though unless I say them in 2’s
Im left handed so maybe this affects the way my brain is wired… good at dates and history too.
Arent we strange 🤔

CoubousAndTourmalet · 03/06/2025 20:06

Crochet, I can do fairly advanced knitting, but crochet just defeats me.
Skipping - would trip every single time.
Not a bad cook, but for some reason I cannot do a decent fried egg.

Andoutcomethewolves · 03/06/2025 20:11

Oh I've thought of another which is quite shameful! I get my husband to do my shoelaces. I can't seem to get the tightness right.

I promise I'm usually a competent professional woman 😬

RedFatball · 03/06/2025 20:15

Ice skating. So many people have tried to teach me, but as soon as the friction between my feet and the ground goes I'm like Bambi and nothing I do can change that. I even had a Proper Lesson once and after that I could still only wobble round holding the side. Instructor was very sweet but baffled at my sheer incompetence

Olive567 · 03/06/2025 20:19

@Andoutcomethewolves @PinkArt Ah that's amazing to hear others with similar issue! Yes, i am musical too and play a couple of instruments but the part of my brain that governs those skills isn't linked to the bit that governs speech. And i too am dismal at any musical quizzes!

coxesorangepippin · 03/06/2025 20:22

Rice cooker, every time

TheGoodEnoughWife · 03/06/2025 20:36

Was thinking about this sort of thing earlier.
I am nearly 53 and I can’t wrap a towel round me and keep it there. I get out of the shower wrap it really tight. Tuck a decent amount in. Move around a bit. Towel falls down. And at nearly 53, as previously mentioned, this is pretty unsexy! Sure to say I never open the door to the postman or anyone with just a towel on. I see those adverts with the lady walking around with just a towel on and think how?!

Raising one eyebrow at a time. All my family can do it, but not me😢

Juggling.

See I always thought I could raise one eyebrow. It certainly felt like I was and I did it regularly as a teen thinking I looked cool. Then one day my sister got me in front of a mirror and said 'go on, raise one eyebrow'. Still felt like I was doing it but the me in the mirror was just doing this very weird squint with a scowl 🤣

I also cannot juggle but that's no great loss haha.

Justploddingonandon · 03/06/2025 21:03

Riding a bike
crypic crosswords ( I’m fine with the other sort and know how they’re meant to work but my brain just doesn’t make the links)
Languages ( particularly speaking and listening, even when they’re talking slowly)
I suspect being autistic explains most of these

I embarrassed myself so much at work attempting to assemble boxes for archiving documents, I just couldn't do it. And the instructions always seemed to be on the bottom of the blinking things. I'm also hopeless at those puzzles that look like open boxes with different colour sides.
I never mastered swimming, had lessons at school but just sank like a stone every time.

Me too for all of those . I do tick a lot of the boxes for dyspraxia .
i really struggle with spatial awareness and directions .
I can drive but am hopeless with parallel parking and my brain struggles with reversing .
i am not good at any formal dancing . Many moons ago I had to leave step classes , especially when more than 1 move is required .
Embarrassingly bad at flat pack furniture . I recently had to assemble a recycling container . It said 30 seconds to do it - took me about half an hour .

UnctuousUnicorns · 03/06/2025 21:33

Put your arms out as if you are holding the handlebars of a bike. Look at them - can you see an L? That's your left arm.

wobblybrain · 03/06/2025 21:43

Rock paper scissors

TimeForTeaAndToast · 03/06/2025 21:47

I can crochet, but could never knit.

oncimesmask · 03/06/2025 21:50

Parallel parking
following a instruction manual
working a parking meter
cling film
hand washing pots
the washing machine

Driving. Still trying to pass, even in my 40s!

Go you @ElliotNess!!! I'm in awe of your determination!

Mine is marriage. 25 years too many...

MaryTheTurtle · 03/06/2025 22:33

Knitting - I just cannot do it, tension is crap, can’t make head nor tail of patterns

PinkArt · 04/06/2025 01:19

Now we've found our people, sadly we must never form a pub quiz team!
My brain's weirdness with words means I'm the opposite of @Mimilamore - I can't play Scrabble well either. I love language, got an A * in English but put a Scrabble board on front of me and I can't remember any word that has ever existed.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 04/06/2025 03:58

Strategic thinking and forward planning. My brain just hits a wall. I can be destroyed at chess, draughts and backgammon - hell, even Connect 4 - in seconds.

I’m a teacher, so it makes planning Schemes of Work even less fun, and I’ve been trying to write my novel for eight years now.

I’m brilliant on the hop, though. I’m in my absolute element when I have to think on my feet.

I definitely chose the wrong jobs.

Ponderingwindow · 04/06/2025 04:08

Skiing. I tried. I really tried, but I’m terrified of slopes and hills even when not wearing skis. No amount of practice could get me comfortable. Plus chair lifts. They are the work of the devil.

Cakeandcheeseforever · 04/06/2025 04:08

Thank you for this thread OP, it has made me feel better!

I can’t follow fast moves from a dance instructor or martial arts instructor at the front of the class as they’re not facing the same way as me. Yoga I can cope with as it’s slow!

Trying to learn crotchet was embarrassing, a child in the same class had no bother but I was mystified.

spoonbillstretford · 04/06/2025 04:09

I only learned to do poached eggs properly when we had our own hens - there were a lot of wasted eggs. Also it works so much better when the eggs are fresh.

Tesco chestnut maran eggs are the best IMO if you have to get supermarket ones. Water on a nice steady bubble. Crack the egg very, very carefully and right over the water, as close as possible without scalding yourself. Poach for as long as the toast is in the toaster.

Get them out with a slotted spoon or a "spider" strainer.

spoonbillstretford · 04/06/2025 04:19

I'm not very good at map reading, following written instructions or anything that requires the brain to go from 2D to 3D.

YouTube videos are a godsend.

I still can't plait hair though other than a basic or French plait. Any other plaits were beyond me. I've also given up trying to wave my hair with platinum GHDs.Some people seem to do it so easily.

This. And it turns out that I hate snow and ice and cold weather. Also hiking. Me and mountains are not a good fit. Turns out my fear of heights (or specifically, falling from them) is absolutely unshakeable.

I'm still traumatised from trying skiing on a dry ski slope on a school trip. I managed to end up falling over at the top of the slope and came all the way down, legs akimbo, while my classmates all laughed and my teacher had to help me stand up at the bottom as my legs (and skis) were completely splayed. Never again!

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 04/06/2025 04:52

Soduku too!

Make-up. I've never found products that stay on my face and eyeshadow is too tricky. I've given up and gone full Pamela Anderson.

Hair too. In a ponytail or clip it goes.

Edited to add: Computers. Apart from basic commands laptops/desktops completely flummox me. I feel like I should comply with some Tech Bros logic and reasoning, because mine isn't the same! PDF forms for example. Wtf are they so difficult to fill in???
