It’s coming up to summer and I already hate the weather. It’s hot, muggy and just ugh.

I hate summer. It’s much easier to warm yourself up than it is to cool yourself off. You can always put more clothes on, but you can’t take more clothes off.

You struggle to sleep cos it’s so hot, and then you’re even more irritable because now not only are you hot and bothered, but you’re tired too.

No I don’t have air con cos I can’t bloody afford it. I have a plug in fan, than yeah works ok in the day but I don’t have it on overnight cos the breeze keeps me awake too.

The UK does not have a single weather experience at the same time. I'm sitting here in London roasting - my brother in Scotland has it overcast. He is surrounded by lush, green grass - near me it looks more like Spain.

MoonlightMemories · 19/06/2025 10:31

Current feels like temperature of about 28.... extremely humid...I'm drinking plenty of fluids but still have this sort of low level nausea at times due to the heat....need to try and sleep during the day but I don't honestly know how.

I find it difficult to sleep without being covered up but honestly it's just too hot to be covered with anything right now and I can't get comfortable at all. I had the windows open during the night but even that didn't make any difference whatsoever. I just don't know what to do with myself...

Edit: God I really REALLY hope we don't end up with 35/40 degree weather for weeks on end...the last time that happened, I was at home at the time, not even out in the sun/doing anything physical and ended up getting heat exhaustion/stroke and nearly ended up having to call an ambulance because of how unwell I felt/couldn't keep any fluids down for nearly 2 days.

That was an absolutely miserable time....I'll never forget it. Honestly think I would just call 999 if that happened again...I wouldn't want to risk getting kidney damage or anything like that as a result of such bad dehydration, which can happen. Those of us that are prone to these heat-related conditions can get a bit worried when the temperatures start climbing and staying at these levels....

flapjackfairy · 19/06/2025 10:55

my 11 yŕ old with complex medical needs struggles much more in summer than winter. He has lung damage damage and the extra water in humid air makes it hard for him to breathe so we have to stay in anyway and use bipap and oxygen to get through. . . I long for Sept from May onwards and once the first of Sept arrives I feel the world is the rightway up again. I can't describe it another way. Summer just makes mefeel out of sorts fir lots of different reasons . The only bit I do enjoy is getting the washing on the line.

One of my friends emails me every second day, so she tells me when they have rain. It's not a "subjective opinion". Why are there so many posts on MN about rainy weather if you have fuck all rain these days? Farmers here rely heavily on irrigation in summer - do they in the UK? I've never seen a photo of the (green) UK countryside with giant irrigators.

Edited

Last heatwave, we had lots of fires, including ancient woodland that contained thousand year old yews.

PickleSarnie · 19/06/2025 16:06

I've lost 4.5 stone since last summer so I'm finding I'm hating it slightly less. I have more weather appropriate clothes to wear and much less built in insulation. But still not a massive fan. The hayfever is hideous too so going outside, even if I liked the heat, isn't fun.

I just love Autumn so much that summer is never going to compare to it. Just the word October makes me feel so happy.

And you think other countries don't have fires?

Saying we had fires doesn't mean that other countries don't have fires! There's plenty of fire to go round...

BlackeyedSusan · 20/06/2025 00:55

It's still 28c in my flat. With the windows open. <Sigh>

The teen is still awake. Going to be fun trying to.get to school on time.

PuddledPeople · 20/06/2025 01:21

I’m on antidepressants, peri, fat and the blood heat is killing me. I’m expecting to spontaneously combust at any moment. There won’t even be a pair of smoking slippers, I will just disintegrate.

Can’t afford AC.

But I do like the longer days that summer brings, just wish it were cooler, less humid and lighter evenings for longer in the year.

OntheBorder1 · 19/06/2025 22:35

No, not at all. But it does show that it wasn't just mildly warm.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/06/2025 07:13

Arse. The temperature in my flat with windows open overnight has gone down to....

27 degrees.

Today is going to be hell.

Notonthestairs · 20/06/2025 07:35

I don’t think I’d claim to have superior knowledge of a country’s climate and weather resilience/tolerance over and above people who live there - particularly based on emails from a friend and given the disparity in conditions north to south.

My original post was replying to a poster who maintains you don't have much rain in the UK, I don't know why fires even came into it. Most countries have fires of some sort in summer, the UK is hardly unique.

If that was aimed at me I can claim knowledge on the amount of rain you have, just reading MN tells me all I need to know, along with comments from people who have lived in the UK and compare the weather there with my country.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain why, if it is so HOT and rarely rains, I never see photos of the countryside riddled with irrigators as they are here.

Notonthestairs · 20/06/2025 08:05

Oh course it was aimed at you. You've been on a number of weather related threads informing British people that they don't understand their own weather.

If you live in a country which generally accomodates wet weather, then prolonged dry spells (like our spring in the SE) does have an impact on our flora and fauna.

And if you lived here you'd recognise that the weather in Angus is quite different from Kent.

I'm dreading tomorrow - nearly 30°C 🥵

Because you remarked upon my comment about there being fires. It shows that rain doesn't mean its impossible to be too hot - so hot that ancient woodland was literally on fire in the last heatwave here.

In Scotland, curtains closed in east facing living room with air conditioning on. Room is down to 21 degrees now and feeling much better. It's going to be a hot one.

I like sunshine and bright days but not heat so much.

For anyone suffering wet a towel and put it on your legs or stomach. It will really cool you down I promise.

I had to get a wet towel and use it as a blanket to get any sleep last night. I’ve just had a load of cooling towels delivered from Amazon and they are proving to be very pleasant, have some in the fridge for night time and dog cooling pads (which the actual dog won’t go near) in the freezer to take to bed. The frustrating this is that outside is a nice temp with a lovely gentle breeze (west of Scotland) but inside is like an over and no amount of of opening windows will help, have had the curtains and blinds shut all day with the fans running but still stifling.

Prolonged dry spells 😅

Maybe it's time people started to adjust to their weather, rather than continue the ages old "whinging Poms" trope.

I never said you don't understand your own weather btw, I originally responded to a poster who said you "hardly get any rain now". The green fields say otherwise.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/06/2025 22:44

Better that conforming to a jingoistic stereotype of people from other countries being a bit dim.

'The Environment Agency has declared drought status for the north-west of England following the driest start to spring in 69 years.
River flows have been declining along with groundwater levels due to the dry March, April and start of May.
Reservoir storage levels in the region are also receding and are currently lower than they were at this time during the 1984, 1995 and 2022 drought years.'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5yqdpq1vj2o

Whilst last year brought much more rainfall than average, with parts of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire experiencing their wettest year on record, this year has pivoted sharply:

  • Rainfall data from the Met Office shows that this was the driest February to April since 1956 in England.
  • It has been the driest March across England since 1961, with only a quarter of the long-term average (LTA) recorded in England.
  • Rainfall for England in April was half of the long-term average
  • It has been particularly dry in northern England:
  • April was the fourth driest across north-east England on record dating back to 1871
  • Parts of Cumbria and Northumbria have had their driest start to the year since 1929
  • Soil moisture levels have decreased significantly
  • River flows dependent on rainfall in hard rock (also known as impervious) areas, have fallen sharply
  • Wildfire incidents are above average due to hot, dry conditions

It’s tooooooo hoooooooot

ive had to admit defeat and go in to the kids paddling pool. It’s a deep one so it’s not some little ankle wetter but fuck it’s cold at first. Feels nice though. I sort of regret it cos now I’m back in the house and I feel hotter than ever.

damn

it’s amazing how different it is
