Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

So many godly people on here. Who can honestly say hand on heart, they’ve not driven over the speed limit? As for having kids taken away, too hilarious for words.

Wow, did someone actually say that? That the OP should have her kids taken away? Shock I have jumped a few pages and not read the last 4-5 pages on the thread. I think we have excelled peak batshit now! (And I will go and read those other pages now!!!)

So can everyone speed when running late?
I did not realise this was a rule .
And here i am stupidly sticking to the speed limit .
Hoping others put road safety and people's lives above selfish decisions.

Literally no one has said this. This is utterly pathetic.

That's a lot over the limit. They might throw the book at you.

They won't.

The law of averages and probability is completely irrelavant in this scenario.

She won't lose her licence though, so your comment is pointless.

I said “If you lose your licence”
I have no clue whether she will or not

There’s some argumentative twats on here 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 01/06/2025 10:42

Nowhere did I say speed limits were higher on A roads. They are, however, on motorways, albeit variable.

The pile onto the op has been dreadful. I cannot believe so many have never broken the speed limit.

Personally I find it hard to keep to it when road conditions are such that driving faster than the arbitrary limit are safe in relative terms. For example, breaching 20mph (which could be argued to be a revenue raising mechanism) on an empty road. It is why I increasingly use the speed limiter.

I regularly drive on the A3, where a 50ph prevails, at 8/9pm when it is empty. It is very easy to creep up to 57/8mph in those circumstances, and probably more if minded to. Therefore I use the speed limiter.

Presently I have 3 points due to less than three years when I did a speed awareness course. The real punishment is the increased insurance premium. That's entirely my fault. The irksome fact is that it arises from 24/20 and 36/30. One on a clear road and one accelerating to get into the right lane on an unfamiliar one way system. I see far far worse driving within the speed limit.

RainbowAndArrow · 01/06/2025 08:55

Can you explain why you posted that?
She isn't going to lose her license and she has accepted full responsibility. It's a MN wet dream fantasy of a consequence that isn't going to happen, she's not going to lose her license because what she did isn't bad enough to merit that.

Apart from making yourself feel good, what was the point of saying what you did?

Firstly, it didn’t make me feel good, I’m not one of those posters

Secondly I have no idea if she will lose her licence or not

So let me explain why I said what I did

It pisses me off when people drive dangerously, like idiots with no thought for other road users. Is that ok with you? Have I explained it clearly enough for you?

You said -
“she's not going to lose her license because what she did isn't bad enough to merit that”

Try telling that to the family of someone she’s injured or worse

Also don’t know why you’re mentioning a wet dream fantasy…what a weird thing to say I’d have a word with yourself if I was you

Oh my god you are properly wonky. But obviously it's the other people that are twats isn't it?

I've never. I have never had points on my licence. I don't find it difficult. My husband has none either.

There’s nothing misogynistic about calling out some of the ridiculously OTT comments here. OP said in her first post that she’d never done it before and was never likely to do it again, having learned her lesson. She asked for an idea of the penalty she was likely to face, and instead she’s had fifteen pages of merciless judgement calling her everything from reckless to a chid abuser. And l’d lay a pound to a penny that the most judgemental posters are coming from a place of guilt knowing they’ve done exactly the same thing. We’ve all driven over the speed limit at some point. Anyone who says they haven’t is deluding themselves.

Yeah this. ^ As I said earlier, I have never gone over 70mph as I am a cautious driver, but I have done 35-38 in a 30 zone before - only for a short spell as I notice I'm doing it, or the signs start flashing at me - telling me I am 7 mph over the limit. (Sorry, nearly 20mph over!) 😬😂

And I have done 45 in a 40 zone, and 53-55 in a 50 zone. Not on purpose, and not often. But I do try to keep slightly below the speed limit the majority of the time!!! As you say, everyone has gone over the limit before now. Even if it's only slightly.

Some people are really projecting on this thread too. Some of the posts are ludicrous and OTT! Saying social services could come and get her kids as she was driving 17mph over the limit. WTAF?! Confused

I might be tempted to hoot at you. Wink.
Whenever I'm doing 73/4 in the middle lane people whizz past me. The people on the inside lane are usually footling or bloody caravans.

BDG007 · 01/06/2025 10:52

You could argue that OP us actually being very safe. Given that there were no other cars on the road, her going 17mph over the speed limit means she reached her destination faster and was therefore on the road for less time. Less time on the road = less time for an accident.

Those posters are falling for the gambler fallacy but driving too fast is a unique event every time it happens. It's not like tossing a coin.

Neither have I. 36 years of driving. Nor DH. 42 years of driving. I have still driven 5 to 8mph over the limit a few times though. (DH has too,) Most police CBA with all the faff and extra work and paperwork that 'arresting' someone for doing 6 or 8 mph over the speed limit would cause.

Really no need for your approach, at all. Like none.

narkyspirit · 01/06/2025 11:17

OP sadly you made a mistake and have received a NIP send it back plead guilty and accept you are likely to get 3 points and a fine of £100, if in the unlikely event it goes to court empty a solicitor and still plead guilty. we all make mistakes.

Some of the people on here need to get off their high horses and may be read the Highway Code with reference to speed limits on different roads. As for the people saying you should be banned and you could have killed someone give it a rest, people get killed on the road every day there have been cases of cyclists knocking people over and them sadly passing away. I am sure that everyone posting has exceeded the speed limit at some point but not been caught and some have, remember 1mph over the speed limit is breaking the law!!

Of course it is. OP hasn’t come on and said she’s been speeding all her life and moaned about being caught. She’s said she has never done it before, has learned her lesson and won’t be doing it again. I suspect the fact that she was clocked at 87 shocked her - in modern cars it’s easy to speed unless you keep a close eye on the speedo, and it’s quite possible she wasn’t aware of just how fast she was going. That’s not an excuse and she’s not making any. She’s taking her punishment and only posted for an idea of what to expect. Despite this, the majority of posters have decided to ignore the point of her thread and lecture her as though she’s a five year old, on the dangers of speeding. It’s pathetic.
