Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

No one is being lax. They are simply.stating it's not the biggest speeding crime, which is true.

A person can really see how the stoning scene in the handmaids take can happen.

Did you miss the bit where OP says she doesn’t normally speed ?

Irrelevant. Dangerous speeding is speeding whether you've done it once or a thousand times.

Isobel201 · 01/06/2025 09:28

if its a first offence, they may offer a speeding course instead of a fine and points - I once got caught by a camera on a motorway during lockdown when there was no traffic and its a short 50mph section with the rest of it being 70mph limit.

So many godly people on here. Who can honestly say hand on heart, they’ve not driven over the speed limit? As for having kids taken away, too hilarious for words.

EBearhug · 01/06/2025 09:30

That's about what we drive at in France and Germany, perfectly legally.

But not on every road in Germany and France, even if the OP were in one of theose countries which she's not.

BlossomIsSoPretty · 01/06/2025 09:39

Hopefully you'll lose your license.

Harsh but I'm the only survivor of a horrific accident many years ago, that has left me with no family and paralysed. My father wasn't speeding and no other cars involved but I have zero tolerance for bad drivers.

Did you miss the bit where OP says she doesn’t normally speed ?

And you clearly missed the point where she was nearly 20th over the speed limit on a road that’s well known by locals as an accident black spot and not suitable for travelling at those speeds?

it doesn’t matter if she normally drives round at a sedate 5mph under the limit at all other times, at this point in time she was going way too fast, got caught and now has to take the penalty.

anytipswelcome · 01/06/2025 10:02

Jesus I’m so sorry @BlossomIsSoPrettythat is just awful x

Of course it's bloody relevant.

Of course she has to take the penalty, nowhere has she or anyone else suggested she won't.

One of the best things about France is that you can drive faster.

Does no-one on here remember the days when one could go for a drive at 4am, put your foot to the floor and hit 100pcm on an empty road and if the police happened to spot you, you were called over, explained it was a performance car, you wouldn't dream of it if there was other traffic about and they nodded, thanked you and said they'd like a go. Befire cameras. Or the thrill of an open top at 70mph and staying dry as the heavens open due to the vortex of speed.

The speed limits in France for dual carriages are 68mph and main roads outside built up areas are 50mph. Miss Penelope Pitstop would have been breaking the law in France too.

As for your little "ah those were the days" reminiscing- no I don't remember that. If it ever happened I'm glad it doesn't now.

Ok. You must know more than, you know, the law of averages and probability and also the actual law.

Mumsnet is wild.

This is such an odd thing to say. If a 747 had landed on the roof of the OP's car, it wouldn't have been her fault. The OP actively chose to try to kill people.

If someone survives a stabbing, their attacker won't get away with telling the police, "Well, she survived, didn't she? You can't blame me for what COULD have happened! I could have won the lottery, but I didn't!"

What a ludicrous analogy! And a really OTT post!

NorfolkandBad · 01/06/2025 10:22

Correcting mistakes

Car speedos can read over the speed but never under, they are not +/- any percent, they can be up to +10%.

Speed cameras have to be within 2%, this is why potential speeders are allowed some margin as they aren't 100% accurate.

I've lurked on here for years and every time there's a thread about driving I despair at the made up "rules" people come up with.

SP30s are taken into account by insurance companies, and will push up your premiums (at least they were years ago when I got one for 33 in a 30)

Balloonhearts · 01/06/2025 10:22

CaptainFuture · 31/05/2025 20:46

A roads in UK are 60. You were clearly not being an observant but a dangerous driver.
Is this where you live?

No they're not. Some A roads are dual carriageways and 70. Think op isn't the only one who needs to pay attention.

RainbowAndArrow · 01/06/2025 10:22

She actively tried to kill people.

Oh my life. I cannot even... Are you actually saying these words???

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 01/06/2025 10:23

Slatterndisgrace · 01/06/2025 00:09

The letter states it was a 70 limit.

This. Some posters are desperate to label this as nearly 30mph over the limit! It was 17mph over FFS. Did you not do maths at school?! I am not the best at maths, and I can figure out that 87 mph is 17 more than 70! Good grief! 😆

.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/06/2025 10:25

There are some odd people on here lately.

OP you won’t lose your licence, it’ll be 3 points and a fine or speed awareness course.

Starlight7080 · 01/06/2025 10:26

So can everyone speed when running late?
I did not realise this was a rule .
And here i am stupidly sticking to the speed limit .
Hoping others put road safety and people's lives above selfish decisions.

Right? I did try pointing it out as a factual thing (written in the letter the OP received) and practically got accused of colluding with the devil……

OP was driving at 20 mph over the French speed limit for dual carriageways like the one she was driving on…

If you think they have preferable / more sensible speed limits in France then hopefully the fact she was 20mph over even theirs for the equivalent road will make you think.

For goodness’ sake, let’s all calm ourselves down here. Nobody - or at least very few posters - is condoning speeding. I’m certainly not. I’m just pointing out what the OP has said from the very first post - that they know speeding is wrong, they know that they shouldn’t have done it and they have presumably learned their lesson.

Speeding is not ok, it’s dangerous and can have horrendous consequences which everyone agrees on and some of you have sadly experienced.

Do the self righteous responses change the situation the OP is in? Nope. Somewhere along the line the point of the thread has been lost and it’s grown rather hysterical arms and legs which isn’t helping anyone, in fact it seems to be raising the blood pressure of a few of you to rather dangerous levels.

100% this. ^
