Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

Wow! Sure is lots of vitriol about this. Yes. Speeding is dangerous but I'm sure more accidents are caused by incompetent drivers driving at lower speeds. There is a reason why insurance premiums are sky high for young INEXPERIENCED drivers.
When I was working I drove thousands of miles, most of them uneventful. However, I was involved in several incidents - none to do with speeding. Nobody was involved with any of them thank goodness. There but for the grace of god. OP is obviously upset so all those who are slagging her off - ask yourselves the homily from the Bible - who amongst you can be the one to cast the first stone!

I know the A64 and driving at that speed on it is REALLY bloody dangerous.
I think most of it is 70 but bits are 50 and doing almost 90 on it is pretty bad.

There aren't many bits you can do nearly 90 on it - as it's only dual carriageway for 3 sections. Then you're back to 60. So little point speeding as you're back to 60 mph and roundabouts etc which slow you down.

87 mph does seem very fast for the A64.

Well to be fair losing your licence is clearly the only thing you give a fuck about.

When people only care about themselves others often hope they get their comeuppance

You can rest assured you won't lose your licence for 87 in a 70 but it may be past the threshold of speed awareness course. Probably 3 points £100 but the fine may be increased

Edited

I agree with this.

I had been coming up a steep hill on the A1 last year, hadn't eased off the accelerator enough and as the road levelled out there was a speed camera, I was recorded doing 86 in a 70.

It was 11pm and we were the only car for miles so whilst I was speeding I was an immediate danger to anyone else if that makes sense.

I got 3 points and £100 fine.

Am wondering what the responses from.. mnet would've been if it was ex was stopped doing nearly 20 miles over the speed.limit....are our dc safe with him....

They would be just as ludicrous, with the addition that posters would say it was child abuse or something

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 31/05/2025 22:44

Have you got any idea how many people die every year on the A64? It's a really dangerous road that switches between dual carriageway way and normal road. If you are from Surrey you'd have no idea of the road. I wouldn't normally bother replying to these threads but you could have easily killed someone. That road has a lot of people slowing down to turn off and people crossing the carriageway when they are turning.

87 mph is ridiculous. Also at 6:20 the road may be quiet for a short stretch but it isn't going to be quiet for long.

I hope you get a lot of points, you'll be lucky not to lose your licence.

Chocolateorange22 · 31/05/2025 22:28

I remembered it was something to do with legislation but couldn't remember the exact reason. We always find nobody is going as fast as 70 anyway yet round the side of Conwy when it drops to 30 everybody speeds through it. Hello sheer drop to the left people.....

That’s because locals know years ago the 30 stretch round the headland used to have a much higher limit when it was two way traffic, this was then dropped when it became one way and has dropped again. 30 mph is much slower than it needs to be.

ArtTheClown · 31/05/2025 22:50

It’s a notice of prosecution not a fine so assume it’s being taken to court.

Not read the whole thread so it's probably been said but that is standard wording. Fill in the form and send it back and you'll get three points and a £100 fine, you won't appear in court unless you dispute it which you aren't planning to do.

Pretty much the same as those in response to OP l would think. Speeding isn’t limited to one sex or the other.

Horrible? For not being aw bless poor you, for going 27 miles over the limit?!

17…

Honestly as annoyed as you are, she's going to get three points and a fine and that's it.

Exactly. 86 and could have done the course. It will be a fine and three points

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 31/05/2025 22:56

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:48

The letter says it was a 70 limit.

It was the A64 in Yorkshire. We live in Surrey.

Do you need to be so horrible? I already feel absolutely terrible and I never usually speed

Are you really expecting sympathy?

Grammarnut · 31/05/2025 22:57

You'll get a fine and points. Points must be declared to your insurers.

elozabet · 31/05/2025 22:57

Some nasty posters on this thread. Obviously these are posters who’ve never made a mistake in their life.

I got caught by a camera doing 36 in a 30 at 7.20am Sunday morning a few months back. My first time I’ve been caught and was lucky enough to be offered the speed awareness course. But it is a wake up call and I’ve been really careful since, but I’ve had so many cars overtake me. Makes me realise how many speed and take no notice of speed limits

OP, did you say you were doing 87 in a 70 limit?

Foodylicious · 31/05/2025 22:58

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 31/05/2025 20:57

That is a very high %
so it wasn't like doing 33 in a 30 mile limit

87 in a 70

Speed kills.

**Sorry quoted wrong comment!
If there isn't a continuous physical barrier then it isn't a dual carriageway.

SRF2 · 31/05/2025 22:59

Interesting thread. You're 24% over the limit. That counts as a band B offence. It's also disheartening to see how many people on here struggle with basic maths and can't think clearly. Band B: Fine + 4–6 points or possible disqualification (7–28 days). 24% of all fatal collisions and 12% of all serious injury collisions are associated with excessive speed. It'll affect your insurance. But it won't stop you driving.

Well to be fair losing your licence is clearly the only thing you give a fuck about.

Of course the OP is worried about losing her driving licence. ANYone would be. No-one wants to lose their licence FFS. But the OP has not given ANY hint or impression that this is the only thing she gives a fuck about' She is clearly contrite, and angry with herself, and feels foolish, and she lives rurally, no public transport, can't get to work, can't get her kids to school etc, but heeeeyyyy, why let facts get in the way of a good OP bashing! 👊

Grammarnut · 31/05/2025 23:00

CaptainFuture · 31/05/2025 20:46

A roads in UK are 60. You were clearly not being an observant but a dangerous driver.
Is this where you live?

A roads are usually 70 mph. 60 is B and unclassified roads (where doing sixty is usually nuts). OP was not observant of the speed limit, presumably or thought no-one would see her. 87 mph is dangerous. I wouldn't dream of doing that on a Motorway let alone an A road where anything can appear.

BobbleHatsRule · 31/05/2025 23:01

Meh to all the haters. Neighbour was doing 92 mph in a 70 a few weeks back and got 3 points and a £100 fine.

I bet you feel cross with yourself and this will be a wakeup call... so the MN public lashers can rest easy 🙄

It doesn't matter that no-one is around and that no-one is in immediate danger. You broke the law. The limit is 70 for a reason. Why did you need to do 86 up a hill?

SybilEsmeGytha · 31/05/2025 23:08

Not here for the sanctimonious pile on. 87 on clear dual carriageway in.a modern car isn't necessarily inherently dangerous but is of course above the limit. I understand the fear and guilt you are experiencing @Speeding87stupid for your uncharacteristic behaviour.

After 20 years with a clear license I got caught at 76 in 60 a couple of years ago. If I'd been doing 75 I'd have just got a speed awareness course. I got three points and am affordable fine after replying to the notice of prosecution letter.aybe £150 or £200.

As it sounds like your first offence I think you'll hopefully get 3 points and a similar fine. You've clearly learnt from it as I did and.dont need to beat yourself up any further in my view. Good people make.bad decisions on occasion, we're all human.

Just ignore these posts, holier-than-thou bullshit. If that poster has never gone over the speed limits, I’ll eat my phone. (I won’t have to).

I certainly do. But then my SIL lost her life because of a speeding driver. Seems losing a licence is rather minor in comparison doesn't it?

Clafoutie · 31/05/2025 23:10

MidoriNoRingo · 31/05/2025 20:56

Points and a fine. No biggie. I wouldn’t say 87 is a completely ridiculous speed. I drive on A roads and motorway everyday for work and people are usually doing around this sort of speed.

Unbelievable. “ No biggie” Until someone is dead.
