In the early 90s my mum discovered hummus which soon became ubiquitous and we would eat it with pita breads that we didn’t know had to be toasted.
She also found jarred pesto which was always quite fusty, I remember, so that became a staple dinner for me as I was veggie.
Garlic bread (GAAAAAAIC BREAD !!!) also made an appearance with a vengeance and once she put it on the side of sausage n mash which was bizarre.
After watching ready steady cook we also put balsamic vinegar on everything including mixing it with sunflower oil and dipping white sliced sandwich bread in it
salad cream got replaced by mayonnaise, in the fridge which was a sad sad day..
Luxury Ready meals took off and I remember a random stack in the fridge on a Friday night to help yourself on a first come first served basis. My favourite one was a sweet potato, spinach and chickpea curry - the first time I had ever seen both chick peas and sweet potato.
Melon and ham (wafer thin not parma) also made an appearance on my mums dinner party repertoire as well breaded cheese.
The Linda Macartney veggie range was a game changer for me in the early 90s after a solid diet of chips, jacket potatoes and pesto pasta ( wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole now tho lol)
