On a scale of 1-10, how embarrassed would you be if someone walked into your house right now?

1 being not at all embarrassed, 10 being totally embarrassed?

I’d say my house is currently about a 5. It’s not terrible but equally the bathroom is overdue a clean, there’s baby toys all over the place and some cat fluff on the carpet that needs hoovering up. Even though I’m constantly hoovering 😂🤦‍♀️

  1. My cleaner comes on a Monday. But tbh I am tidy & clean most days. Can’t bear a mess. My kids aren’t little so that helps …
MrsTerryPratchett · 19/05/2025 16:39

It depends. The state of the house isn’t great. But I think pop-ins are ruder than not keeping a show home at all times. So I wouldn’t be embarrassed.

Pfft. It's always a state, so I'm fairly unembarrassable. Say a 3.

MereNoelle · 19/05/2025 16:41

It isn’t perfectly clean and tidy but it’s certainly not embarrassing levels of dirty. Just normal family mess like shoes thrown off by the front door.

People would be horrified to see the squalor I live in.

Dogaredabomb · 19/05/2025 16:43

Meh, 1. It's not perfect, at all but just normal shite like a few shoes and keys not in the right place.

Whiteflowerscreed · 19/05/2025 16:43

3 but I’ve just had a third baby so I think people would give us a free pass

CoastalCalm · 19/05/2025 16:43

Probably about a 6 usually cleaner would be coming tomorrow but she’s on holiday so bathrooms are probably the main thing and we need to do our usual declutter Monday regardless

irregularegular · 19/05/2025 16:44
  1. It's not perfect (why would it be?) but it's more than fine and I definitely wouldn't be embarassed.
Dryshampoofordays · 19/05/2025 16:45

8? I always feel it’s not good enough for pop ins but I can’t keep on top of the mess with two little ones at home!

FadedRed · 19/05/2025 16:45

1, I’m assuming they will have come to see me because they’re fond of me, not to judge my housekeeping skills.

I used to be like that. During lockdown I ruthlessly decluttered for a very long time, maybe two years bit by bit. After that it's stayed fine. The key was finding a place for everything. It's was brutal and took ages.

Me too. I love my house. Other people may not feel the same and it’s not squeaky clean but it’s mine.

AlexandraJJ · 19/05/2025 16:46

1 it’s always clean and tidy. I couldn’t rest if it was anything else

LunchBoxPolice · 19/05/2025 16:46

8.because I’m a cleaner and people expect my house to be clean and tidy, but it isn’t.

CarpetKnees · 19/05/2025 16:46

Not because my house is pristine - it is far from it, and indeed quite cluttered - but because I know anyone calling in is coming to see me (or dh) and not to inspect the house.

DancingNotDrowning · 19/05/2025 16:47

1 - I have a cleaner who comes regularly, so nothing is ever in need of a clean. Worst case scenario is when one of the teenagers has brought down all their towels from their bathroom or glasses from their bedroom and dumped them in the laundry room/on top of the dishwasher.

Palsaq · 19/05/2025 16:47

One? People come round all the time. It just looks like a normal house. It's not like I've got a sex dungeon or an open sewer in my kitchen.

Womblingmerrily · 19/05/2025 16:47
  1. Just cleaned, no one's back to destroy it yet.
museumum · 19/05/2025 16:48
  1. And not becaue it's a showhome but because I am totally unembarassed by the general evidence of daily life. The kitchen would be embarrassing for hosting a dinner party (kids snack plates out and laundry drying) but not for a normal Monday mid-afternoon.
UpUpUpU · 19/05/2025 16:51

Upstairs is clean as I’ve cleaned today and nobody has been up there to make a mess.

we’ve just had dinner so there are plates waiting to be scraped and put in the dishwasher and school bags dotted around but nothing that couldn’t be fixed in 5 minutes.

nannyl · 19/05/2025 16:51

My house is fine; it's not a show home, I don't attempt to pretend it is,

Anyone who visits is typically here to see me / my family, not judge my home surely?

Love51 · 19/05/2025 16:51

No one is doing anything I'd be embarrassed about. One of the kids is glued to a screen but I've given him a 10 minute warning. There is an incomplete DIY job I'd like to complete but it isn't embarrassing as such.

mumda · 19/05/2025 16:52

Do you want an answer that relates to my shame capacity or the level of tidiness of my house?
