On a scale of 1-10, how embarrassed would you be if someone walked into your house right now?

1 being not at all embarrassed, 10 being totally embarrassed?

I’d say my house is currently about a 5. It’s not terrible but equally the bathroom is overdue a clean, there’s baby toys all over the place and some cat fluff on the carpet that needs hoovering up. Even though I’m constantly hoovering 😂🤦‍♀️

It's only happened two or three times. Zero embarrassment because they've walked into the wrong house, not me!

Edit: I read someone as a vague unknown, i.e. a stranger, not an unexpected visitor. Even then I'd have no real embarrassment.

Shuttered · 19/05/2025 16:53

I don’t get embarrassed about the state of the house, ever. I don’t think I fully understand why other people do. Either you’re all much more squalid that I am (though I don’t think that’s true) or just mind more what other people think of your housekeeping?

Ove just walked through the hall, which has three unhung paintings propped against the wall, a jug of withered flowers on the table, no less than four pairs of teenage DS’s giant clown shoes on the floor and about seven coats and a football kit on the chair, and a wetsuit over the bannister. Would that level of untidiness mortify you? I have no metric.

Chocaholic1216 · 19/05/2025 16:54

probably a 3. It’s quite clean and tidy but I have a German shepherd so someone coming in would probably think it smells of dog and the bathroom could do with a deep clean as I’ve only had time to do a surface clean for the last ten days

VioletandMauve · 19/05/2025 16:54

1 - my house is always clean and tidy

doodleschnoodle · 19/05/2025 16:54

1, our cleaner left about two hours ago. Ask me again on Friday Grin

PluckyBamboo · 19/05/2025 16:54

I wouldn't answer the door, cat shat earlier and I need to empty the litter tray first!

bengalcat · 19/05/2025 16:56

1 because I’m too old to care what others think

4kids3pets · 19/05/2025 16:57

Zero embarrassed as everyone that pops around has come to have fun with me and the kids not judges, I wouldn't want people like that in my life.

mummyyyyyy · 19/05/2025 16:57

I'm not ashamed but it's not the tidiest for sure

Almostwelsh · 19/05/2025 17:00

1 House is always fairly tidy but even if it weren't I don't give a shit.

Hif · 19/05/2025 17:03

Because I don't give a shit what anyone thinks.
Objectively the house is fine. Not perfect and not a slum.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 19/05/2025 17:04

I wouldn't be embarrassed, I'd be saying "Who the hell are you and how did you get in my house?" 😂

Friartruckster · 19/05/2025 17:04

Depends. You’re guaranteed a cup of tea, biscuit, and use of toilet without fear of a lurgy. I love my home. It’s clean, tidy and well organised. It just a good update. So looking a little tired. So no embarrassment about bringing hospitable. 1.

However, I have a specific relative who has never been invited; has been vocal about my apparent rudeness in the absence of an invite. I have never invited them because they would be really snippy about the ‘state’ of the place. In that context 10.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 19/05/2025 17:05

I like a clean and tidy house so I would rarely be above a 2.

TeenToTwenties · 19/05/2025 17:05

Because I don't really care what other people think about my house.

Plus if some random walked into my house they would be in the wrong so they should be embarrassed not me.

Iloveeverycat · 19/05/2025 17:09

5 not really the untidyness that's the problem it's the threadbare carpets and needing updating all through the house as it hasn't been done for years as we can't afford to get anything done.

NorthXNorthWest · 19/05/2025 17:14

10

Pollqueen · 19/05/2025 17:17

Maybe a 4 because my downstairs floors could do with a sweep and mopping but my garden is looking fabulous though

ThatGumYouLike · 19/05/2025 17:20

About a 6, though that doesn't really reflect the state of the house so much as the fact I'm already in pyjamas.

TulipTuesday · 19/05/2025 17:21

If it’s by best friend then 1. She’s the only person I’d let see me and my house in a state.

Anyone else right now, probably an 8. That’s more because I’m a mess. WFH today so I’m in scruffy clothes and my hair needs a wash. The house isn’t dreadful but DS’s cricket stuff is still in the hall, the recycling needs to go out, and there’s crap dumped on the dining table.

MaisieMouse87 · 19/05/2025 17:23

Maybe about a 4. The house isn't a mess other than kids toys and a few dishes need doing. But my hall need painting.

Takeoutyourcow · 19/05/2025 17:26

Two. The kitchen table has a few bits and pieces on it that have been dumped since we came in but other than that it’s fine.

JohnTheRevelator · 19/05/2025 17:27

From my point of view (as in I don't give a shit what some random visitor thinks of the state of my house),I'd say 1. From THEIR point of view though,it would probably be a 7. My spare bedroom is the culprit. It's a junk yard at the moment. But I don't really spend any time in that room, apart from going in now and again to try to sort stuff out,so I'm not too bothered.

thetrumanshow · 19/05/2025 17:28

I don't tidy up for visitors, I tidy up because I enjoy my house not being a mess.
My house is always as "visitor-ready" as can be. It's also so much quicker to keep it clean than having to do a frantic deep clean.

There's probably a couple of school bags and shoes in the hall where they don't belong, trust my kids, but it will take them 5 seconds to put away.

Think The Organised Mum Method.

thetrumanshow · 19/05/2025 17:29

Toys everywhere while they are being played with is not a mess. It's kids playing in their home.

Toys dumped and abandoned because the kids have moved on with something else? that's a mess, and when I make my kids tidy up.
