What would you bar on MN

Lighthearted obviously .

So if you could bar anything emojis a topic etc on mumsnet what would it be.

I would bar all grammar checkers you know the ones that quote you and tell you to go back to school instant bar.

The constant treads about child maintenance.

And the double standards that women are always right on here.

What would you bar on mumsnet.

Cat photos.

No one needs a fucking cat photo.

They do. Especially on cat threads. Don't read cat threads.

Get rid of cat threads and some politics threads then.

I'm not interested in cat threads, but they're a pretty Ronseal thing for those who are interested in them - so why stop cat-lovers from talking about them and sharing pictures?

I find it much more irritating when people derail a thread and/or do many of the abovementioned annoying things that otherwise detract from the enjoyment/helpfulness of a thread; but a thread that clearly promises X from the start and then indeed contains X - so that people who aren't interested in X can clearly see the title and scroll on by - how is that any kind of problem?

What's a derail anyway?

A thread is not a straight one between opinion A and opinion B. Some meandering can only be healthy and entertaining.

There are also people who deliberately derail to start an argument, the thread make no sense so it gets pulled.

A common tactic by MRAs to shut us up.

"And you had children with this man, why?"

Fuck off you smug, sanctimonious, vindictive prick.

This made me laugh 😆
I have also seen it so many times on MN!

Enigma53 · 18/05/2025 10:15

Photos of the vagina, labia, clitoris, rectum, mouth and tongue.

Just see a bloody doctor if you are worried!!

I agree - but a derail is not the same as a digression, diversion or development.

Supposing somebody started a music appreciation thread about Pink. Posters widening it out and discussing other female pop singers whom they like and contrasting their voices, songs and styles is a perfectly valid development of the discussion. However somebody posting 47 times about how much they hate 'gendered' children's clothes and banging on demanding to know why girls supposedly shouldn't wear blue - that would be an epic derail.

Palegreentoast · 18/05/2025 10:19

I would ban any post that begins ‘You do realise’ or ‘You do know’ so condescending.

Absolutely.

It depends how entertaining is it though.

A good derail is an art.

Don't forget the worst of the worst, DDog. I genuinely cannot understand why people do it.

I can well understand that one! 🐶❤️

Telling someone to call Womens aid, or the RSPCA or the local mental health crisis team when the person suggesting it clearly doesn't have any idea what those organisations or services do, or whom they are for.

Same goes for 'log it' with 101.

I remember somebody once parroting "Log it with 111" - the NHS non-emergency helpline - and it was something like a neigbnourhood parking dispute! And thankfully not one that had escalated to such a point where any aggrieved party now required medical advice!!

AnotherPerformance · 18/05/2025 15:42

Threads about VAT on private school fees. Affects so few of the population.

Posters always defend their stance, especially about ‘flooding state schools’ even when evidence shows that there are schools closing dye to lack of numbers.

MiL threads. MiL’s are mothers too! We are all different, not everything within another family is wrong, just because it isn't what you are used to. Acceptance, compromise, communication, work well. Why destroy other women on here.

Women are not always right and not all put their children first. Men can and do put their children first. Assuming a poster who defends her son must be covering or lying is so damaging.

Any post where it is clear the PP hasn't read the thread or taken account of when it was posted, posting the most basic, common answer, three days and 666 posts later.

I do WISH THERE WAS ( I know you didn't ask😆) a ‘ turning off comments’ button ( see above!).

OP says 'lighthearted' but I don't think these replies are light-hearted. Many of them seem quite serious.

HelenHywater · 18/05/2025 16:45

It's not lighthearted but I can't bear the benefits bashing threads.

Often they're ableist as well and I don't see why MN tolerates that.

SchrodingersTwat2 · 18/05/2025 17:04

Any mention of the Royal Family. It mystifies me that people know the names of them, let alone wonders what they're doing.

And all of the justifications that posters make for heavy drinking.

SchrodingersTwat2 · 18/05/2025 17:07

I'd keep child maintenance threads, purely because I'm still waiting to get any. 20 years so far... It's a system needs discussion (and then setting fire to).
