Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

She’s on her feet most of the day but in a smallish space
has a nap when she gets home
no running half marathons or anything

my active role is a three hour shift (I do other (sedentary work))

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so

A 45 min walk should be around 4k steps unless you are walking very slowly?

Towwanthustice · 18/05/2025 14:05

I do 10 to 12000 without trying. I do an extra 5 to 10000 with exercise and dog walks x2. À
Sounds like she's set it up wrong (step length vs height etc).

Motheroffive999 · 18/05/2025 14:09

I do 8,000 steps before 10am every day , house work , walking dogs and starting work at 8am.
My average is 32,000 steps per day.

Maximum I've done is 12 miles but the next day I would be absolutely k. Oed. I achieve 10,000 steps most days but only if I'm actually going far and walking.

Vodkamummy · 18/05/2025 15:25

Everyone walks at a different pace. On average I walk about 1,000 steps give or take 100 in 10 mins or so, so to do 5,000 about 50 mins. I could easily do 10,000 walking the dog for a couple hrs

Moonlightfrog · 18/05/2025 15:25

Isn’t 10,000 the recommended amount 🤔?

My Garmin changes my target amount each day based on previous days, so the more I do the higher my target. 10,000 a day is my ideal but some days I do 16,000 and others I only do 5000.

I don’t see what it matters what your friend believes she is or isn’t doing.

i just can’t imagine getting together with a friend and actively trying to prove them wrong about something like their step count.

Right? Petty Betty.

10,000 really isn’t all that hard if you are moderately active.
An hours dog walk plus everyday activities works for me.

28,000 however would not imo be possible without several hours exercise a day…..although my watch doesn’t pick up and count random arm movements 🤷‍♀️

Doctors who work in hospitals often do 25-30k steps, especially on nights in big hospitals, where wards can be spread out.

Introvert80 · 18/05/2025 16:49

Call me weird, but I don't count steps. I retrace my steps on Google maps and clock up my mileage for the day. I find that more accurate.

Skybluepinky · 18/05/2025 17:14

Sounds like both ur step counters are inaccurate.

YB1985 · 18/05/2025 18:06

why is bothering you so much? let her think what she wants.
5k really isn't very much btw.

Bluedenimdoglover · 18/05/2025 20:53

In the grand scheme of things, does the number of steps she does really matter? Just smile and nod and let her believe what she wants to believe.

MumOnBus · 18/05/2025 23:17

My barista friend does often over 20K steps in a smallish place. Steps still count, even if going nowhere.

You do this daily?

Sounds like you would be a prime candidate for a smart watch if you’re going to this effort @Introvert80 😂

LegoTherapy · 19/05/2025 10:08

This is mine today so far. I’ve walked Ds to school and this is accurate for the distance. My steps will be around 20,000 by the end of the day.

Try doing the maths. If I walk briskly, I do 120 steps per minute. So 28,000 divided by 120 and converted into hours and minutes is 3 hours and 48 minutes per day walking briskly. At a slightly less brisk 100 steps per minute, that's just over 4.5 hours walking per day. Is she really walking that much? I doubt it.

crackofdoom · 19/05/2025 13:35

So, this was yesterday. 29,000 steps ish = 14 miles. Took me about 6 hours, but I did stop for food on the way, so less than 5 hours walking.

I'm still trying to work out whether my phone's distance counter is accurate. The South West Coast Path book (published pre GPS) said it should have been 10 miles. That also tallied with the distance signposts en route. However, I did park probably a mile from the coast path, so that added a couple of miles I guess. Plus, I got quite lost in the sand dunes, and there was also a small burst of activity post midnight- yes, I was out dancing til then! I still think my walk was a bit longer than the guide told me it should have been, however, and this is normal when I go walking.

Has anyone else discovered that their step counter tells them they've walked further than guide books/ signposts tell them they should have though?

My average is 15-17k a day. Thats two dog walks, two trips there and back to the bus stop with my daughter and then all life movement on top. I live in London and if I go into town I usually get around 20k. If she was regularly doing 28k she’d be bloody knackered and spending the majority of the day on her feet unless she was an incredibly fast walker!

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 21/05/2025 12:06

I suspect yours is short and hers is over, I do about 10 000 on a standard day but I do 45 mins in the gym and then at least 1 dog walk plus getting the kids, pottering round the house, popping to shops etc. On a busy day where I do 2 dog walks and/or have a day out at a theme park or similar I'd do 15-20 000,I don't think I've ever done near 30 000 and I feel like it'd be hard to fit in without doing some running because I've had days where I've walked almost none stop and not got that high.
Let her believe it though, what's it matter in the scheme of things!
