Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

When I worked in home shopping as a picker I used to do about 17k in a six hour shift and my feet and legs constantly hurt.
Now I'm a carer for DS and usually get about 14k in a 24 hour period. 28k sounds almost impossible if she's not constantly active.

Crazyworldmum · 16/05/2025 21:46

I had the same argument with my hubby we then tried 3 different watches , Apple Watch , Fitbit versa and a Samsung and the difference was less than 1000 steps .
I easily do 17000 steps a day . I work from home but every phone call I make I walk around so they easily add up .

JayJayj · 16/05/2025 21:50

When I was working full time I would do between 20 and 25 thousand steps. Lots of walking around for my job. Now I’m home more I average around 8000 without really trying.

JustSawJohnny · 16/05/2025 21:52

10,000 isn't hard to achieve at all.

A few years back when I was on Team RH I did 15k daily. There were some nutters in the group who regularly did 25-30k steps.

What I would say is they were VERY active. Like hardly sat down for a minute all day or they went on 2-3 hour walks every day. Does she have a dog? I average around 1k steps per 10 minutes so a good walk daily really adds up.

No idea how you manage to do only 5k in an 'active' roll.

TheLimeQuail · 16/05/2025 21:53

The last time I did 20k steps in a day, I could hardly walk for a week

lljkk · 16/05/2025 22:04

Oilofeveningprimrose · 16/05/2025 16:05

It roughly takes about 1.5 hours of brisk walking to do 10k steps.

That... my fitbit & Garmin (& pokemon go App) agree with that sort of hours required. I achieve it easily most days.

Tigergirl80 · 16/05/2025 22:05

I’ve just been waving my phone around like crazy to get it out of 13k steps. I’m not usually superstitious but when it comes to number 13 I am so thanks.😂😂😂

Obese · 16/05/2025 22:07

Mynewnameis · 16/05/2025 16:35

I'm a hiker and very rarely hit 30k. Even after walking many miles.
20k ish I do fairly often but it's quite a lot

Yes, same. I do a 10 mile walk 4 days a week and it's about 22,500 steps. 30k steps takes a lot of extra effort.

Donewiththisshit · 16/05/2025 22:13

I have worked from home today, didn’t walk the dog as had back to back meetings all day and then collapsed on the sofa after work. I feel old a sack of potatoes. Just checked my steps- 664!!!!!!
No wonder I feel rubbish, so easy to be dangerously sedentary.

Thefsm · 16/05/2025 22:14

My record was only
doing 40 in a day. I just got up to pee twice. I rarely get more than 5,000 only on va action when we walk about 15k a day. I do swim a lot though. My phone doesn’t know that so assumed I was disabled. It was so surprised one day when I climbed a few flights of stairs in a row.

Iloveanicegarden · 16/05/2025 22:14

This whole 'steps per day' thing is based solely on a Far East manufacturer of smart watches, as a marketing ploy. Yes, it's good to move for fitness to keep muscles strong and so on, but steps is not necessarily the best way. It's a load of hype. Ask yourselves who is benefitting.

MyOliveHelper · 16/05/2025 22:16

Mine regularly records 25k on the postnatal ward. Less in other departments

Doodleflips · 16/05/2025 22:20

Why is it so important for you to convince her she’s wrong?

28000 isn’t that much. I do 20000 a day most days

maxybrown · 16/05/2025 22:21

I am currently on almost 26000 today. I ran a 10k this morning and have walked up and down hospital corridors and more today a lot. 10 thousand isn't difficult for me but I move a lot. She isn't doing 28000 a day. I have done this and more even without running but that is long walking days out on my feet all day.

Curlygirl06 · 16/05/2025 22:26

I did nearly 27000 steps in one day when on holiday, which works out as about 12 miles. Is she walking 12 miles?

alittleprivacy · 16/05/2025 22:32

SillyNavySnail · 16/05/2025 20:57

I generally do 20-25,000, sometimes 30k but I'm a gardener, non stop mowing lawns, strimming them, on my feet all day. And my feet and legs ache like hell on my fuller days!

28k is a lot for someone in a role not similar to my own

I used to do a very active outdoor job along with daily dog walks and some form of exercise like a dance class, skating, walk with friends, etc most evenings. 25-30k, or even more was the norm for me. And it was great. I could eat every last thing I wanted and wear a size 4.

My life is more sedentary now, but I'll still usually hit 10k most days.

Why are bothered ? Do you just need to be right. Jesus Christ get a grip.

accentdusoleil · 16/05/2025 22:43

What kind of watch do you ? as you should be getting about 1k per 10 mins walking .

Apple Watches tend to over estimate steps and calories so be wary of them

JustAMum31 · 16/05/2025 22:44

Absolutely no idea how accurate they are - I don’t really give it much thought to be honest 🤷🏻‍♀️
Normal home days with DS (4yo) I usually clock about 10-12k.
Work days when DS is at nursery it’s usually 18-22k per day. I don’t drive so we walk everywhere.
Work days are from home to nursery (1mile), nursery to work (1.3miles), work an 8.5hour shift on my feet in busy retail where I spend all day running back and forwards to the stockroom and pulling options for customers etc. Then it’s 1.3miles back to nursery and a 1.5 mile walk home as we walk a friends child home too while she finishes work.
So I walk 5 miles just doing the nursery/work commute.

ALJT · 16/05/2025 22:57

5000 is low. Sounds like your app is under recording - if you push a pram or anything it doesn’t pick it up

ChocolateCinderToffee · 16/05/2025 23:05

footpath · 16/05/2025 21:00

You can be on your feet all day at a theme park or city break and not hit 20000 because you aren't always actually moving much.

Any time I’m on a city break I do at least 15K in a day. When I lived in London it was much easier to get 10k in than now, when I live in the countryside.

Ladyluck22 · 16/05/2025 23:06

I do about 11,00-12,500 in the week at weekends about 6,000. Yours is very low.

Picklepower · 16/05/2025 23:11

If you do an active job plus another walk in the day and only get 5000 steps your tracker is broken.

I easily get 10k with a 1 hour dog walk and a half hour school run each day, plus general pottering at home

Crumblesandcustard · 16/05/2025 23:18

I did 23,000 steps last week when I ran a half marathon 😅. You'd be knackered if you did that every day.

FreddoSwaggins · 16/05/2025 20:31

Nothing like a thread about step counts to show the absolutely huge variation there is in the number of steps people are ready to believe they've taken.

Though I do think anyone who claims 10;000 is easy because they do 5,000 steps "pottering: around the kitchen just making breakfast, are deluded. Even if they are really doing 5,000 steps because they are an Oompa Loompa in a long tight skirt, those 5,000 pottering steps aren't the equivalent of exercise.

Measurements everyone should be monitoring are minutes of movement there heart rate is raised.

First sensible answer on this thread.
