Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

I did that much when I walked around New York literally all day.

Angrygirl · 16/05/2025 21:32

What are you using to track this? It sounds completely inaccurate.

It takes about 7 minutes to do 1000 steps. You would have to be the slowest Walker in the world to do only 2,000 steps in 45 minutes!

Or have long strides. I rarely get to 10000 steps, even though I walk everywhere at weekends. A full day in work (730-) is 5000 steps. A 5k run is roughly 1step per 1.5 metres. A whole day pottering round the house is about 2000 steps.

RandomWordsThrownTogether · 16/05/2025 23:53

Most fitness trackers are gos enabled and also tell you miles walked though older step trackers could be tricked by arm movement. I find my morning walk or 25-30 mins is around 3000 steps. 28,000 seems like a lot unless she is a very active role! Days out when I am walking most of the day I think the most I have recorded is about 24k and that has only happened about twice ever!

Teateaandmoretea · 16/05/2025 19:55

10k steps is 5 miles so that’s a fairly long dog walk, it isn’t nipping round the block.

If I don’t go out all day and am working I can easily do under 2k. I generally get to 15k at the weekend and make sure I at least walk 2 miles daily so minimum of around 6k.

I have averaged 9k a day this year according to Apple Watch, but of course some of the time it’s out of battery.

Have to agree. 10000 steps is a two hour stroll with a friend for me.

just returned from getting my steps up 😃😃
calculated the old fashioned way by actually counting my steps and it was just under 100 in one minute so every time I do a 45 min walk I’m probably clocking up 4-4,200 steps HURRAH

And the entire time you were no doubt seething about your friend not accepting she’s WRONG and you are RIGHT

She’s on her feet most of the day but in a smallish space
has a nap when she gets home
no running half marathons or anything

my active role is a three hour shift (I do other (sedentary work))

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so

I expect the apps are all different - mine is the 💌 symbol which was already on my iPhone. On a reasonably brisk walk I clock up 7,500 steps in an hour, so unless you are a really slow walker I'm sure you're doing more than 2,000 in 45 minutes. Smile

Sparklehead · 17/05/2025 07:07

On the days that I walk to and from work, I average 16-18k steps. Just checked and it’s 2.5 miles to work so 5 miles there and back, plus work across different wards in a hospital so on my feet much of the day. Non work days or when I don’t walk in, it’s more like 10-11k.

amyds2104 · 17/05/2025 07:22

I do a very computer based job but walk dog twice a day and look for excuses to do more steps like stepping when hanging out the washing, stepping when hoovering that type of thing. I also have my Fitbit in my sock so it’s accurate. I found it annoying when I realised my Fitbit wasn’t recording all my steps pushing pram/trolley.

amyds2104 · 17/05/2025 07:31

Some days I do 16000 others 25000

Lolalaboucheridesagain · 17/05/2025 07:34

I’m a nurse in a very, very busy ED. I do about 17k steps on an average 12.5 hr shift. My husband is a fell runner who runs daily and also walks our dog x2 in addition to a busy day, and he rarely hits 20k steps. So I think your friend is unlikely to be hitting 28k unless she’s extremely active every day.

nellly · 17/05/2025 07:42

I think both your watches are wrong (and mine probably is too lol) I work an office job and easily get 14/15k between walking from a car park a bit away and nipping for 45 minutes gym session

Twodogsonthecouch · 17/05/2025 07:47

I walked the Camino de Santiago last year. 800km in 6 weeks averaging 20km a day. I just checked my average daily steps over that period and it was 27,388. Is she walking > 20km/ day average?

Agreed! but oh, this is such an annoying thread! From the OPs last post it seems she is adding them up in her head? Not using a tracker? OP: Loads of steps are added by just pottering as another pp said.

I walk loads but recently sprained my ankle. In the house with absolutely zero walking and I clocked up a few thousand steps - just going to the loo etc!

I clock about 10k via a long walk and day to day wfh pottering. Agree that 30k steps is a huge amount though, I clock this amount when we go out walking for the day, in the countryside or etc. I might get this if I had a v active job, eg primary school teacher always running around, rather than sitting at my desk all day.

Booklover78 · 17/05/2025 08:42

I think as others have said that your watch could be wrong. A 35 minute school run there and back is 4000 steps for me. Had both fitbit and apple watch and same. I have a desk job but two school runs and half hour in gym gets me to 12000 for week days. Holiday sightseeing this year we were averaging 20000 with very tired feet by end of the day 😂 On Saturdays if we're driving kids to activities and I don't leave the house for a walk it can be as low as 5000.

KaToby · 17/05/2025 08:45

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think people overestimate how active they are. It can feel like being on your feet all day should mean a lot of steps but it doesn’t.
I average 16-24k a day.

School run x2
work (supermarket so generally busy)
dog walk
gym
Then general cleaning and jobs at home. I find 10k easy and usually hit it by about 10am.

Surely walking speed and pace length come into it. Maybe your watch doesnt record all your steps. I'm a nervous stepper. I never keep still when standing. Standing still for me is probably one step a min on average.

This is a bit confusing

you say one thing
and then say you hit 10k by 10am, which undermines your previous point entirely!

I’m saying people overestimate how active they are. I’m not saying that I do. I know I’m active but when I speak to people at work etc who describe themselves as very active it’s nowhere near as much as I do.

you don’t think you overestimate how active you are but other do overestimate
presumably those others you are referring to… think precisely the same 😆

Pppppoooch · 17/05/2025 09:00

Yes, just checked my stats for the past few days. Walk around 7.5 km and it’s a little over 10k steps. This typically = a walk that is 1hr 20 min plus all the other pattering at home. I have a non active day job. If I was on my feet all day like @KaToby it would add up. In fact, on the days that I go into the office (& therefore have longer to go to the loo, to get a coffee, etc etc) it’s usually 15k steps and honestly I’m not active at work! But I do walk to and fro to work, which adds up to about 1 hr 40 mins walking!

SunnySideUK77 · 17/05/2025 09:12

I go for two 30 minute walks a day and then whatever else I do is on top of that. I always get at least 12.000 a day

If you’re out walking it’s 6000-9000 steps an hour, depending on pace.

your tracking is not accurate!
if you’re out walking for 45 minutes that should be about 4000 steps minimum.

Yeah I think your watch may be wrong too! 😂

45 minute gym session would be about 5-7K for most folk and that’s assuming you’re doing mostly cardio. So how far away is this car park if you’re doing say another 7K-9K from walking to and from that? The carpark would have to be at least 30-35 minutes away.

Or do you work in a large office and purposefully walk around it a lot? I usually WFH but if I go to the office I clock up about 2 thousand steps going to and from the canteen(multiple times in a day) and the toilets - if I sit far away from them.

I have two phones and the step counter on them is about the same if I stick them both in my bag. I used to have a cheap smart watch - forgot the brand name - and that counted a similar amount as my phone which is 1000 steps for every ten minutes walking. A bit more if I dance or jog.

Reading this thread, I’m surprised so many people’s step counters are seemingly inaccurate.

Would anyone recommend the Apple Watch as an accurate step counter? I was thinking of getting one so I could leave my phone at home more when I go for walks.

Teateaandmoretea · 17/05/2025 12:13

For interest purposes - I’ve just got breakfast, sorted washing and spent an hour cleaning downstairs and have done 1800. I cannot get significant steps without going for an actual walk.
