Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

Nothing like a thread about step counts to show the absolutely huge variation there is in the number of steps people are ready to believe they've taken.

Though I do think anyone who claims 10;000 is easy because they do 5,000 steps "pottering: around the kitchen just making breakfast, are deluded. Even if they are really doing 5,000 steps because they are an Oompa Loompa in a long tight skirt, those 5,000 pottering steps aren't the equivalent of exercise.

Measurements everyone should be monitoring are minutes of movement there heart rate is raised.

I'm assuming everyone on MN lives in enormous houses. If I spend the day cleaning I do less than 2,000 steps.

I think it's a bit unreasonable to say that pottering around the house doesn't count though. If I deep clean a room, I might not do that many steps, but it's much more of a workout than a stroll along the riverbank.

SunnyViper · 16/05/2025 20:42

I used to regularly get 25000 in pacing around school.

CyclingAddict · 16/05/2025 20:36

just returned from getting my steps up 😃😃
calculated the old fashioned way by actually counting my steps and it was just under 100 in one minute so every time I do a 45 min walk I’m probably clocking up 4-4,200 steps HURRAH

Yes that sounds much more right.

BunnyLake · 16/05/2025 20:50

I used to have a job where I would be doing 25k a day and I was knackered at the end of it. That was me on my feet for 8 hours a day (shop floor).

changedusernameforthis1 · 16/05/2025 20:52

Before my disability I did 5k each day on the school run (that's 2.5k morning and afternoon). On a shopping day I could do another 5k going to Tesco and back, and adding up little bits like taking bins out, housework, visiting people etc it all added up quite high.

You could always suggest that your friend wears hers on her ankle for a couple of days. I wanted my recorded steps to be as accurate as possible so that's what I did.

Kbroughton · 16/05/2025 20:55

Why do you need to convince her. .
Just go about tracking your own steps if that floats your boat and leave her to track hers.Until reading this thread i had no idea the nation was spending time doing this.

footpath · 16/05/2025 20:56

You must be new to MNs, people do 25000 before breakfast potterinh around the house.

SillyNavySnail · 16/05/2025 20:57

I generally do 20-25,000, sometimes 30k but I'm a gardener, non stop mowing lawns, strimming them, on my feet all day. And my feet and legs ache like hell on my fuller days!

28k is a lot for someone in a role not similar to my own

Yeah I try and get 5K steps when I work from home but when I do most of the steps are very intentional. I use a standing desk and walk on the spot during meetings, or on the phone. I dance to various playlists on Alexa intermittently and sometimes I’ll do a short workout video on YouTube and I’ll take my bins out and use the stairs.
I definitely can’t see myself getting 5K steps from “pottering around”. That said, I stay in a flat - maybe these people live in huge 3 storey houses 🤷🏻‍♀️and go up and down the stairs regularly.

footpath · 16/05/2025 21:00

You can be on your feet all day at a theme park or city break and not hit 20000 because you aren't always actually moving much.

footpath · 16/05/2025 21:02

I don't think even a postman or a door to door work person with no car would do that much.

I used to do home visits on foot and each shift could be about 8-9k (thousand steps not kilometres.) Then I walked to and from my day job on top so that was another 8k.

My shoes got worn out and I was constantly knackered, and I now have osteoporosis! So I don't believe 28k is remotely healthy. Unless you're a professional marathon runner?

So she must be living in fantasy land. But let her get on with it I guess. Unless she's trying to do a fundraiser and lying to extract money off people.

Edited

I agree. We are all different but generally not a good idea to be walking almost 30k steps daily.

Namechange2567 · 16/05/2025 21:06

I do 25k a day usually, 9k is my average at the minute 37 weeks pregnant

AngelicKaty · 16/05/2025 19:33

@CyclingAddict Well the good news OP is that the "recommended" figure has been reduced from 10,000 to just 2,337 steps per day for improved heart health following a study in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology.

I’m winning then even when I WFH 😂

seriously though, I aim for around 5-10K daily and I’ve always thought something was better than nothing as long as you’re consistent.

I think some were so focused on a magical number of 10K that they adopted an all or nothing approach.

Like almost acting as those who only walk a few thousand steps a day may as well not have bothered. But a couple of thousand steps is definitely a start.

Deerrobin · 16/05/2025 21:10

I’ve done 30,000 today - but that included a 15km run, 4x kids school/club runs and general pottering around/housework. Typically I hit around 15,000 a day on non running days but usually try to go for a walk to get some more movement in each day.

OneBadKitty · 16/05/2025 21:10

I just don't believe most people's steps. I spent three days walking and sightseeing in Paris, was totally knackered and only clocked 30,000 steps. I'm a TA in a school and walk a mile there and back and am up and down school a lot, doing fetching, carrying, playground duty, constantly walking round the classroom helping children, doing displays, taking children down to lunch etc. etc. It adds up to aout 3,000- 4,000 steps by the end of the day. I have to make an extra effort to get to 10.000 by gong for an extra long walk in the evening. So how anyone can do 28,000 just pottering about a school as claimed above is beyond me- that's over 15 miles!

monty09 · 16/05/2025 21:11

I average 15,000 to 20,000 a day, 6,500 just doing the school run each way, if I'm at college I'll have done my 10,000 by half 9 so easily done.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 16/05/2025 21:14

I do 8000 on the school run alone so reaching 10000 is really easy. why are you so certain it is wrong?

You must live quite far from the school then? About 40 minutes walk?

It’s pretty clear her friend is wrong Because walking around a small space during the day alone is unlikely to reach 28,000 steps. That’s what her friend is claiming as her step count btw. Not 10K.

I got a lot of steps while working in a small-ish shop but nowhere near 30K. Even when I used to walk 30 minutes there and back.

Tontostitis · 16/05/2025 21:21

I do loads of steps sitting in the garden crocheting.

6,500 steps one way? If so that’s a lot.

It seems a lot of people live quite far from their schools. I’m used to living 20 minutes walk away and if any further they drive or bus it.

I do like walking depending on the area/weather but If I had to walk 50 -60 minutes to get to work/school I’d probably take a bus.

Nothingspecialhere · 16/05/2025 21:22

My husband is a postie and usually does 30-35k steps in a 5.5 hour shift (active time out) walking 14+ miles each day. That is non-stop walking/jogging. I can’t imagine that is accurate without intentional exercise.

Similarly, if you go for a 45 min walk it cannot be accurate you only gain 2k in steps. I went for a 57 min walk today and got 6.5k steps. Is your watch on tight enough to register?

Angrygirl · 16/05/2025 21:32

CyclingAddict · 16/05/2025 16:09

She’s on her feet most of the day but in a smallish space
has a nap when she gets home
no running half marathons or anything

my active role is a three hour shift (I do other (sedentary work))

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so

What are you using to track this? It sounds completely inaccurate.

It takes about 7 minutes to do 1000 steps. You would have to be the slowest Walker in the world to do only 2,000 steps in 45 minutes!

NevaMama · 16/05/2025 21:40

You’re right - it picks up every movement. Playing the piano for an hour and I can easily clock up 5000 steps 🤣

I was going to say that too! I was outdone however by my friend who conducted a choir 😂
