Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

@ladyoatsin answer to your question re Apple Watch there is lots of info online and the consensus is that Apple Watch overestimates steps and calories burnt . hawawei is supposed to be the best for it .

garmin of course is good but expensive

I have had Cheap ones in the past and they do the job.

Rumbley · 17/05/2025 12:52

Not much effort to get to that at 12.52pm. A ten minute walk there and back to newsagents

and then a 45 minute walk with dog

and pottering around the house

but with breakfast, lunch and mumsnetting too!

Ah interesting - I don’t think I’ll bother with the Apple watch then.

It was a cheap Huawei smartwatch I had years ago then the strap broke and more recently I got another even cheaper one from an obscure brand I can’t recall. As I said I think they were both decent for accuracy.

Yes I don’t think I can afford/justify the cost of a Garmin. Might just get another Huawei and if the strap breaks again I’ll fix it!

1 hour in the gym at a cardio class today: 2500 steps. He had us jumping, running back and forth etc.
Then I did 2000 walking from car to supermarket.

Don't reckon I'll get beyond 5k today.

RainIsCool · 17/05/2025 14:13

Regards the Apple Watches/step counters, I found that the step counters that you put in your pocket or clip to your belt/clothes gives the most accurate readings as it doesn’t count any accidental arm movements and mine also starts counting steps after I walked 10 continuous steps and then adding them together. You put your details and it gives you steps, calories, distance, time. Basically everything smart watch does just cheaper and more basic and amazingly accurate.

Fireandflames · 17/05/2025 14:14

My Fitbit and phone both count 28,000 plus a day, I'm very busy most of the time. Arm movement does get picked up but not to the extent of what you've said.

It’s early afternoon and you think you’ll do just 500 steps before going to bed?

How do you manage this with fibromyalgia?!

xsquared · 17/05/2025 14:20

CyclingAddict · 16/05/2025 16:09

She’s on her feet most of the day but in a smallish space
has a nap when she gets home
no running half marathons or anything

my active role is a three hour shift (I do other (sedentary work))

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so

How are you only doing 2000 steps in 45 minutes? That is roughly 5k at a brisk pace with, amd assuming a stride length of around 1m.

I easily achieve 10,000 steps as walk 30 minutes to work and then walk back in the same time. My job isn't super active either as I spend a lot of time standing or sitting.

With great difficulty to be honest, I'm a single mother and two kids keep me on my toes. If I don't move I seize up and moving becomes even more difficult, so I limp my way around.

xsquared · 17/05/2025 14:25

CyclingAddict · 16/05/2025 20:36

just returned from getting my steps up 😃😃
calculated the old fashioned way by actually counting my steps and it was just under 100 in one minute so every time I do a 45 min walk I’m probably clocking up 4-4,200 steps HURRAH

Ah, just seen this. That's more realistic.

Walking is something my specialist said is beneficial to my health, I'm not going to take crap from people on the internet who don't know my individual circumstances. Walking is different from sitting and standing for 8 hours a day.

You sound like one of those idiots that think disabled people should sit on their behinds and suffer.

Rumbley · 17/05/2025 14:30

Basically walking a Marathon a day with fibromyalgia is impressive to say the least

It's ok, I'll just sit on my behind and suffer then. People on the internet know everything apparently 😑

Kuretake · 17/05/2025 14:43

It's often very inaccurate in either direction. I remember one person on here getting very cross about it. She was saying how could people not manage 10k a day when even when she had spent all day in bed with flu just her trips to the bathroom and back had clocked up 5k. Would not accept this couldn't be right.

See also the resting heart rate threads where most mumsnetter have the resting heart rate of a 20 year old athlete. It's because they're looking at their average over 24 hours including sleep.

Yep. I'm not going anywhere now, just sitting in the garden or pottering about. I'm not usually a sitting round person, but I think I need it today.

I'll come back at 9, when I move indoors, and see what I've managed😁

I disagree my husband’s Garmin always gives more steps than an Apple Watch. When we do exactly the same activities.

I average 5000 a day and I can't walk far due to arthritic knee

purser25 · 17/05/2025 16:55

When I had a step counter and a cheap garmen strap thing I always clocked over 10’000 steps. Now I am retired but a carer so always on my feet I only do about 5000 steps. For some reason my target is 4280 don’t know why but that is what it says more expensive Garment watch. Also it doesn’t record flights of stairs and I am up and down a lot. 28’000 was what I would record on about a 10 mile walk.

Thepossibility · 17/05/2025 17:40

I found it amusing when my DH watch dinged 10,000 steps while he was seated and relaxing the other day. Mine recently claimed I'd had a 4 hour nap in the middle of the day on a Thursday!

But if you are not the same height as your husband, your strides will be different.

Assuming her husband is taller than her though (may not be the case but is likely) then you’d expect his watch to clock fewer steps, not more.

MixedBananas · 17/05/2025 18:08

I used to do 10k walking 3miles to work / home and a lot of walking around work.

I cam do 20-30k on a very full days out hiking / walking a new city. Not normal day to say unless she has a desk treadmill?
